birth control pills to women students this semester according to dr carl ruch university medical director tuesday rueh said a new more private examination room in johnson hall and the ability to collect laboratory specimens in the office has made it possible for health service doctors to prescribe oral con traceptives for university women in the past ruch noted the health service usually had provided only con tinuing care for students already using oral contraceptives referring other cases to the local planned parenthood office lab specimens including pap smears now are taken at the johnson hall offices and processed at st luke's hospital in the past students had to go to the hospital for almost all lab work ruch said lab work will be billed through the health center and bursar's office rather than the hospital ruch said he explained this system is more convenient for students ruch noted a number of changes in procedure at johnson hall designed to increase student confidence in university medical care and provide more service to the campus population students with personal medical problems formerly had to write private on a slip of paper and hand it to the health center receptionist this practice has been . eliminated ruch said students now need only ask to see a doctor without explaining their problem he explained things are , not as private at the front desk as they could be although the university still has no visiting psychiatrist ruch said an alternate psychiatrist in addition to the one previously on call is now available the case load is too light to warrant a visiting psychiatrist ruch explained ruch said he hoped student dis satisfaction with the health service ex pressed in last semester's student health advisory committee shac survey would be lessened mis semester with pro fessional care available around the clock this semester he said students should feel more confidence in the health care offered he noted the shac a committee organized by the office of the dean for student affairs should serve as a liaison between the medical staff and the student body this would improve com munications and allow complaints about service to reach arrives to mark the opening of the 1977 lehigh football season many of the members of the class of 81 will be familiarized with the above marching 97 song they will be chanting the words and chugging beers but very few will realize that by the end of this year that beer and those to come will have cost the fraternities an estimated 130,200 that represents purchases of about 6,510 kegs from local beer distributors just for beer you say yes just for beer—no harvey wallbangers included no jack daniels for those late night birthday shots no entertainment costs considered when the university social life is mentioned in conversation alcohol is usually the first topic of discussion although many students are quite content with being able to walk up the hill and drink for free others feel from excessive alcohol consumption faculty studies grade processing bykenbandler a questionnaire concerning the handling of grade cards has been sent to all university department chairmen by the faculty committee currently investigating the handling and processing of grade cards we are trying to educate ourselves as to exactly what goes on with grades now according to jerry king committee chairman and professor of mathematics the committee was charged by the university provost to examine the present system of handling and processing grades the committee formed during the sum mer plans to give the provost its initial recommendations in october the questionnaire contains four questions and an additional section for general comments the questions are how the blank grade cards are tran sported from the registrar's office to the individual departments how the blank cards are distributed to faculty members within each department how the completed cards are returned to the registrar's office by the faculty members in each department whether departments have any systematic manner for keeping grade books or other records of assigned grades we will certainly have to eliminate the casual handling of grade cards king said five undergraduates failed to register for the current semester after being charged with paying an as yet unidentified person or persons to falsify their grades the grades were reported to have been altered on grade cards taken from the safe in the registrar's office king said any kind of possible fraud could be stopped through verifying grades all professors were asked to verify their spring semester grades as part of an administration investigation into the false grades verification of grades after each term by all professors will be standard policy beginning this semester there is no uniform method by which grade records are kept in departments king said the committee will make recommendations for keeping grade books in departments after grades are given out king said the committee is not specifically concerned with cheating on exams and plagiarism that area of academic dishonesty was investigated by the forum last year see night page
