lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 12 friday november 4 1955 university 6-0331 where's rosie contract didn't specify female by mark evans for the benefit of the uninformed or the still imbibed fall house . party has been over since 5 p.m last sunday but the memories of it will last for quite a long time the three days devoted to rev elry and assorted partying were entirely successful in pursuit of their purpose and accomplish ed their mission with little trouble friday momentously began with the release of the b&w in the early afternoon on the cover was pictur ed the sensuous and charming miss rosemary o'rielly vocalist with the sauter-finegan band unfortunately this was as close as anyone got to miss o'rielly since she was not present at the dance that night sources report that the contract with s and f called for the seryices of only one singer and as luck would have it the warbler chosen was andy roberts the male crooner dates were present in classes as early as 9 a.m friday but the real avalanche began as the day grew older at four the wild rush by students back to the dorms and fraternities to change clothes was in full earnest cocktail parties were next on the hp agenda and provided a liquid introduction to dinner which fol lowed a brief rest period was ex perienced by the celebrants after the meal and preparations were made as to how to accomplish the awesome chore of putting on formal attire and invading formidable grace hall at ten and later couples arrived her majesty—the queen of the 1955 fall houseparty mas miss bev erly peterson of douglas college who was chosen by student leaders from among seven finalists her date was biil van winkle of sigma phi epsi lon fraternity faculty car lots not fully used proposed actions by arcadia on three major student problems—stu dent parking and the health and university centers—highlighted the arcadia meeting wednesday night john silinsh 57 head of the campus committee which is studying the parking problem submitted the committee's re port comprised of a recently completed survey a detailed study of the situation survey statistics show that the university is depriving students on the average of 110 parking spaces unused daily in faculty park ing lots by registered faculty cars the survey was devised to deter mine the extent to which the avail able faculty parking areas are be ing utilized the survey consisted of five counts on different days and at different times during the day the counts consisted of the following four categories 1 cars with faculty registration 3 cars with no registration stickers 4 empty parking spaces twelve faculty parking areas on lower campus were considered the average of all counts revealed that only 33 per cent of the avail able 358 spaces were being utilized by faculty members students ac counted for 20 per cent while non rcgistered cars took up 15 per cent tit the available space the remain ing 30 per cent of suitable spaces uncle sam will increase civil service advantages by art roth ' uncle sam has turned over a new leaf as far as civil service is con cerned ' candidates for careers in the j federal government will have greatly increased opportunities under a completely revamped recruitment program aimed pri marily at the colleges the heart of this new look in irnment employment is the fed service entrance examination fsee which broadens and imlincs civil-service selection techniques open to all graduates and seniors i-egardlcss of major of field of study the fsee will be given every few months instead of the oid method of oncc-;.\-year exams eg changes have also been made in the exams themselves the old exams were of a strin seni rather highly specialized nature designed to screen out all candidates except for those few possessing the trainin and ability to fill a relatively small number of positions howard c jackson regional ex amining and placement chief will bp in room b-l of christmas-saucon hall wednesday nov 9 at 4 p.m to discuss the new examination with all interested students the first exam v ill be given dec 10 1955 all applications must be filed before all candidates will be required to take a general examination during the morning session to test verbal easton student dies in accident dead man's curve near eastop aye brought death early sui morning to-john sutherland 20 p lafayette college freshman as he and two passengers in his car v returning from lehigh's houseparty taken to st luke's hospital with a punctured lung and frac tured skull the youth died at . 4:50 a.m sunday three and one ; half hours after his car left the treacherous road jeremiah durham 20 a passenger il_t the auto is presently in fair .. condition at st luke's having suf fered a severed spinal cord his con dition is improving lewis knicker bocker 19 thrown from the car was released from the hospital after treatment prexy questions university policy the letter below has been sub mitted to the editors of the brown and white by george mac lean president of ifc mac lean states among other things his stand on dean byron c hayes's action against two frater nities who allegedly violated uni versity rules on hp weekend the text of the letter follows to the brown and white the action that dean hayes has taken on two fraternities during houseparty weekend has raised a question of university policy which needs clarification that is the poli cy which forces an individual to go to a function which he doesn't care to attend for any number of person al reasons that the two fraternities have violated the rules as stated in the social petition is not to be disputed whether the action had to be enforced by a special security patrol and other indi viduals checking up on the situ ation is a matter of conjecture from all reports the behavior of both houses in living up to the imposed regulations would seem to indicate a desire to cooperate and comply with the rules as they were laid down however the larger question which needs evaluation is the policy of in effect forcing people to at tend a particular social function letters score chi psi delt's the following two letters were sent by associate dean byron c hayes to the presidents of delta tau delta and chi psi fraternities on saturday oct 29 the 29th was the saturday of houseparty in his remarks dean hayes explained that due to the fact that 1 delta tau delta mem bers took part in an unauthoriz ed and unchaperoned hay-ride early that morning and 2 chi psi was contemplating and plan ning unauthorized functions at the same time that university functions were going on both houses were in effect on pro for the duration of the weekend text of the letters follows dear mr falcone i was very disappointed to learn yesterday that although we had granted permission to chi psi fra ternity to participate in the 1955 fall houseparty chi psi fraternity has made plans which ignore the basic concept that houseparty is an ap proved well-chaperoned organized activity chi psi's decision to not support nor attend the all-universi ty dance on friday evening and the plans chi psi made for class part ies of an unauthorized and un chaperoned nature for the time of the dance are what i am referring to principally frankly i am not quite sure what other arrangements have been made for unauthorized and unchaperoned activities for the balance of the weekend but it is quite obvious from the houseparty plan which has been submitted to me that other unauthorized and un chaperoned deviations have been contemplated may i reiterate for the record that houseparty itself is an all university function — planned supervised and participated in according to the rules by all members of the lehigh family who voluntarily associate them selves with this activity any erroil garner jazz pianist to improvise in grace at 8 erroll garner the debussy of jazz will appear tonight at grace hall in the second scl program of the season the jazz master will be accompanied by his combo and will begin his program at 8 p.m a native of pittsburgh the 33 year-old garner has been a member of the roster of legend ary jazz greats for the past 20 years last year he won the pittsburgh courier and norfolk journal and guide awards as the best pianist of 1954 in addition garner is one of the few americans to win a prix dv disque award from france which is comparable to an american academy prize garner comes to the lehigh cam pus from the bluenote in chicago and the newport jazz festival he recently played concert dates throughout the east and midwest and is scheduled for a european tour next spring this piano impressario stems bopster—jazz master erroll garner and his combo will appear as the second presentation in the current scl series tonight widely acclaimed i garner comes to lehigh directly from the bluenote in chicago and the newport jazz festival see sigh page 10 see haves page 3 see profs page 10 see ifc page 4 see be-bops page 7 see u.s page 7
