george m leader to membership on the new pennsylvania state planning board selected because of his back ground in atomic research and his education in engineering dr whitaker was recommended by a number of high-calibre men said david v randall whitaker was chosen because of his great capabilities he's a good man stated randall secretary to gov leader in a recent phone con versation randall is a former le high graduate and a past member of the brown and white feature staff the planning board previously re sponsible to the dept of commerce is now responsible to the governor directly mr jack robbin former secretary to the governor will head the economic redevelopment pro gram in southwest pennsylvania the governor outlined these as some of the subjects to be studied soon by the board the effect on pennsylvania of the st lawrence seaway the effect on the state of atomic energy for peacetime use how changes in the iron ore supply will affect the commonwealth coal's future place in the nation's energy pattern and the multi purpose development of the state's principal river valleys — the dela ware susquehanna-juniata and the allegheny-monongahela-ohio dr theodore millon assistant professor of psychology received an appointment from gov leader last may to the allentown state hospital trustee board millon became its president in june president martin d whitaker acetylene tank blazes threatens packer hall an exploding acetylene tank was the cause of a blaze which threatened for a while at least to aid in the gutting of packer hall before it was ex tinguished by city firemen the fire which occurred at 10 a.m tuesday was put out in a mat ter of minutes however it took the firemen over 30 minutes to quench the smoldering woodwork which had become become ignited when the flames crept up the interior of the wall and along the roof beams according to chief john schwe der of the victory fire company workmen on the third floor of the building were cutting a steel beam with a torch when acetylene escap ing from a defective gauge flared up and exploded no injuries were re ported had the fire succeeded in getting a good hold in the interior of the walls and roof the supporting beams could have been weakened suffici ently to cause the collapse of the roof and possibly the building said one fire department official two engines responded to the alarm along with two fire de partment cars a hook and lad der truck arrived later but was sent back since the fire started at the 10 a.m class break there was a good-sized crowd that paused to watch the op eration chop-chop—a fireman puts the axe to a section of packer hall wall to get at the smoldering woodwork beneath while chief john schweder right supervises the operation to get this picture the b&w photog had to balance on bare joists where a slip would have meant a three-story [ drop to the debris below hundreds view fritz lab dedication tests over 200 of the nation's top indus trialists and engineers are guests at the dedication of the new fritz en gineering laboratory this afternoon the entire proceedings are being shown to the spectators over a spe cial closed-circuit television system dr allen v astin director of the national bureau of stan dards is the guest speaker others participating in the pro gram are dr eugene g grace chairman bethlehem steel com pany and president of the le t high board of trustees president martin d whitaker dr harvey a neville director of the insti tute of research and prof wil liam j eney director of the la boratory to symbolize the opening of the laboratory hale sutherland pro fessor emeritus of civil engineering and richard t douty civil engi neering senior will push the but ton to begin the tension test on the five-million-pound capacity ma chine the demonstrations will begin with a tension test of a 12-foot steel bar followed by a repeated-load test of a 42-foot concrete beam finally a compression test will be performed on a laminated wood section television sets placed stra tegically through the laboratory will enable those attending to see every detail of the dedica tion and tests the closed-cir cuit television facilities are be ing supplied by the philco cor poration in addition to its herculean strength the universal testing ma chine also possesses great precision and delicacy as was demonstrated for the benefit of life magazine pho tographers earlier this week using an egg from which a chicken was ready to be hatched the leviathan proceeded to crack the shell allow ing the chicken to escape unscatch ed before—heid lam chi psi get fracas bills moose returned two lehigh fraternities — pi lambda phi and chi psi — have been sent bills totaling 197.50 by an ithaca restaurant for damage clone sept 24 after the lehigh-cor nell football game the brown and white learned of the incident in a phone con versation wednesday with charles laforge of zinck's rest aurant 109 s aurora st ithaca three lehigh students eric ker ry 55 francis schwerin 57 and robert gschwind 56 were booked by ithaca police on charges of dis orderly conduct laforge told the b&w that mem bers of the two fraternities carted off a four-ft by four-ft campus map of cornell and attempted to leave the establishment with a treasured moose head which originally hung near the bar he also said that plaques insex'ib ed with the names of pi lambda phi and chi psi which were part of a collection exhibited m the restaur health center open until 8 p.m daily starting monday the university health center will inaugurate an expanded program of services and operate under a revised schedule of hours additions of two doctors and a registered nurse to the staff make it possible for the center to be open daily from 8:30 to 8 saturday from 8:30 to 12:30 and sunday from 10 a.m to noon according to dr ray e andrews assistant director a registered nurse will be on duty from 5 to 8 p.m pri marily to administer first aid to those men receiving injuries during intramural sports play another change in policy is that there will no longer be a charge for x-rays or penicillin shots — within reason all medication will also be free said andrews in addition the center will also carry on as far as possible individual health treat ments under the supervision of pri vate physicians — such as giving shots to chronic hay-fever sufferers and diabetics the center will treat anybody that is ill or injured except for emergency cases requiring im mediate hospitalization and sur gical treatment andrews said the decision to extend services came about when they realized they've got the facilities and might as well us them two physicians will be on duty during the day in addition to dr andrews dr alfred r lovell will be at the center mornings and dr gilbert hoffman will be there after blast at 3 a m injures pledge jim sayre 58 of phi delta theta was seriously burned at 3 last fri day morning while cleaning out the basement of the phi delt house in preparation for the parent's week end he was taken to st luke's hospital at 4 a.m and treated for first degree burns of the arms face and neck he was burned when he threw a can of turpentine into
