lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa.^friday october 5 1975 s¥:':¥fi : : : : : : : : : : : : : : ; : ; : : : : i : : : fi ; : : :^^ 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 8 hotel bethlehem utilized as student rain shelter bvjohnmahoney leaking ceilings m the rh-11 complex caused the residence halls office to move three students from two apartments into the hotel bethlehem last wednesday night i diane wolf 77 said her complaints to sidence halls two weeks earlier con rning a leak m her apartment brought no action until she complained of very large quantities of water coming through her bedroom ceiling during the recent rain storms she said someone was sent to inspect the ceiling on tuesday sept 23 after which a maintenance man came with a water vacuum and portable heater to dry i it the room's soaked rugs wolf said she contacted her father the xt day to tell him of the problem she said he called sharon drager assistant dean of students residence halls then notified her that reservations had been made m the hotel bethlehem for wolfe and her roommate according to wolfe the water entered her apartment through the exterior wall where an outside staircase is attached she said she was told the affected areas would have to dry out before the leaks could be caulked wolfe also noted that a window broken by a frisbee was not repaired until 0 weeks after the damage was reported the apartment of sharon cohen 76 located next door to wolfe's also developed a leaky bedroom ceiling which drained water onto new books and some clothing she said when the leak was reported on wednesday sept 24 drager and william quay dean of students in spected the ceiling and then authorized her to stay m the hotel bethlehem for the night she said she was promised she would be reimbursed for the damaged rh-ll rain washed three rh-11 dwellers across the river to hotel bethlehem sarubbi against six-day classes by jane marcin i don't think saturday classes will relieve the scheduling situation one bit said robert sarubbi associate professor of mechanics and chairman of the forum academic environment committee the registrar feels it will make his scheduling job easier but i don't think it would i wonder why he wants them at all sarubbi said four years ago the forum passed a resolution that saturday classes be abolished the registrar however can reinstate them if he feels they are necessary no decision must be reversed or rule changed for him to start scheduling saturday classes sarubbi said students who are opposed to saturday classes should work through the forum to stop or restrict saturday quizes five years ago when saturday classes existed there were two three-day sequences mon.-wed.-fri and tues thurs.-sat both sequences had five classes per day sarubbi explained the present tues.-thurs sequence however has four with three 75-minute morning classes replacing the usual four 50-minute classes it is this one lost class sarubbi said that the registrar claims will alleviate scheduling difficulties ! sarubbi said the registrar issues a statement concerning increased scheduling conflicts every year he noted that even fewer last-option noon classes may be scheduled now than were when saturday classes existed expanded electives have created greater scheduling problems but how much greater he asked sarubbi said that as a teacher he sees a less involved response at an 8 a.m class the kind of turn-out on saturday morning is different he said less people show up faculty and administration members may respond that teachers should just get tougher to get around it he said and i won't argue that the students are showing less responsibility they wind up getting a poorer education but is it their fault he asked the school should be more sensitive m • dealing with the situation he said sarubbi admitted that some professors did not like the change to the 75-minute classes but not many felt this way many preferred the change he said in a recent b&w interview the registrar noted that m a 1971 poll of 400 terminal contract involvement denied by language professor by lew goldstein m a letter to the five untenured mem bers of the modern foreign language department on sept 18 anje c van der naald associate professor of spanish has denied any personal involvement m the administration's rejected proposal to issue terminal contracts to the untenured members of the department in the letter van der naald who was one of many people considered to replace anna herz professor of russian as chairman of the department said she voiced her ob jections when informed about the adminis tration's proposal to issue terminal con tracts on may 1 van der naald met with john hunt dean of the arts college m the middle of february and that conversation prompted van der naald to write hunt a letter on feb 26 the following statement is an excerpt from this letter you mentioned the fact that our untenured staff is m an insecure position and from your words i gleaned perhaps mistakenly that the adminis tration might possibly consider the dis missal of some or all of them while i am aware of the fact that our institution cannot employ people for sentimental reasons i think that we would impoverish our department by the dismissal of our junior colleagues except of course for academic reasons they are needed to create the kind of department i think we should and could have van der naald wrote that the proposed issuance of the terminal contracts to the untenured members of the department was not a rumor as hunt suggested after the administration withdrew its proposal on may 1 when van der naald was told of the administration's decision hunt asked her to keep all of their conversations m strict confidence i can say that i honored his request with respect to every one of my colleagues and my only reason for disclosing this particular matter to you the untenured members at this time is based on my refusal to be judged unjustly by you or anyone else on what i consider an im portant aspect of character van der naald's letter stated van der naald m the interim period between may 1 to may 26 told hunt repeatedly that the proposal of giving terminal contracts would seriously hurt the chances for the strengthening of the department in the letter van der naald wrote it was my impression that my remarks were listened to carefully and that they would be given serious consideration on both oc casions dean hunt stated that he would convey my recommendations to dr zettlemoyer on may 26 m a letter to hunt van der naald wrote according to the remarks i have from different individuals m and outside the department the terminal contracts were linked to the proposal of a change m chairmanship and therefore to me the withdrawal of the proposal and the issuance of regular contracts is likely to confirm the idea of such a linkage she concluded the letter by writing i do not want my untenured colleagues nor anyone else at lehigh to harbor the idea that i had anything to do with the proposed issuance of terminal contracts for anyone since such a notion will naturally be regarded as a negative aspect of my character i therefore request that it be made known to my untenured colleagues that i had no part m the matter and that on the contrary i suggested a different approach as attested by the above mentioned remarks i made to you in addressing the non-tenured members see letter page 9 anje c van der naald coed raped at apartment in south side bethlehem detectives are investigating the rape of a lehigh university coed police said the 19-year-old woman told them she was attacked m the bedroom of her south side apartment about 4:30 a.m sunday she told police the man awakened her and told her i will cut you to ribbons see rain page 4 see opposition page 10 inside : gridders favored p 12 frat prank p 4 psychogram p 6 classifieds p 5
