lehigh university brown and white v 215-866-0331 vol 88 — no 29 bethlehem pa tuesday february 1 1977 lewis other top officials will retire within 7 years by jeff bodenstab editorial page editor the next seven years will bring the retirement of six of the university's highest ranking officials including the president two academic deans and three of the university's seven vice-presidents the university's two top administrators the president and the provost are scheduled to be replaced m successive years among those scheduled for retirement m the next seven years are president lewis albert zettlemoyer vice president and provost elmer glick vice president and treasurer joseph libsch vice president of research john karakash dean of the college of engineering and robert stout dean of the graduate school and acting dean of the school of education lewis is scheduled for retirement m 1980 he is followed m 1981 by zettlemoyer although there has been informal discussion concerning their retirements no offiical action has yet been taken ac cording to harold mohler chairman of the board of trustees university procedure dictates that all university personnel retire by the june of the year following their sixty-fifth bir thday beyond that date persons may stay with the university only by special per mission of the board of trustees in the case of the president and the provost who are appointed by the board of trustees a trustee search committee is formed a year or more before a scheduled retirement according to austin gavin executive consultant to the president the committee reviews a number of candidates for the position and formulates one or more recommendations the recommendations are then considered and voted on by the board of trustees a trustee search committee will be created m 1978 to choose a successor for president lewis according to mohler the committee will consider candidates from a variety of sources mohler said the next president may come from an industrial background he said other possible sources are the fields of politics and cold work b&w photo by heidenreich frigid weather did not stop these workmen from continuing their task m the freshman quad medical director decision pending by jerry miller a final decision concerning the hiring of a new university medical director probably will be made later this month according to preston parr dean and vice president for student affairs final ap plications for the vacant post are now being reviewed parr said the vacancy was created by the resignation of former medical director dr p laurence kreider last summer dr duane stackhouse is now acting medical director dr kreider left us kind of quickly stackhouse said causing the delay m filling the position advertisements for the position were placed with medical journals m august soon after kreider's resignation but many did not appear until late last year he said we've been very busy and from that standpoint we wish we had a third doctor it's natural that we'd like things to go a bit faster stackhouse said he noted however that finding a doctor who is willing to leave a practice to work at the university is a time-consuming process the final interview for the position was held last friday according to parr stackhouse said the applications will be reviewed by the health service doctors parr and the student selection com mittee at least five doctors including one woman have expressed interest m the job he noted parr said the employment procedure being used m the selection has developed m cooperation with the doctors and af firmative action representatives applicants for the job tour the health facilities and speak to health personnel several support joining 2 vice-presidential offices by dave blanchard several faculty forum members have said they are personally m favor of con solidating the offices of vice president for planning and vice president of ad ministration a possibility mentioned by university president deming lewis during a december press conference lewis stressed that he believes consolidation will not occur m the near future his suggestion of consolidation was made three years after he pushed to create the position of vice president for planning at that time forum opposition to creation of the post was raised by several faculty including chairman of the department of mechanics and mechanical engineering last week beer restated many of the reservations he expressed three years ago about the new vice presidential post , — beer said he personally favors consolidation that the post of vice president for planning is an unnecessary separation of duties which could be done by individual departments beer emphasized that he was not speaking for the forum things looked bleak . . . mike brown trailed 3-1 with just 65 seconds left m his 190-pound bout lehigh trailed 16-15 with only one bout to follow greg cooper was m control riding brown for the first two minutes of the third period ideas of a con vincing victory over navy were vanishing as the capacity crowd urged the freshman to reverse the middie senior . . but brown was able to arch his back and force cooper's back to the mat without ever gaining control the result a fall at 6:57 sending a par tisan lehigh crowd into near hysteria and giving the engineers a com manding 21-16 lead see story page 12
