director jeffrey milet has been named head of the university's division of speech and drama milet is an alumnus of the university of bridgeport and earned the m.f.a degree at yale university school of drama his areas of expertise are m theatre design lighting design and technical direction he is also a theatre consultant milet was appointed assistant professor and designer-technical director m lehigh's theatre curriculum at the beginning of this semester he will suc ceed the late john h pearson who served as division head from 1972 until his death last summer prior to his lehigh appointment milet albert zettlemoyer bookstore lost 50,000 last year by 808 waldeck the university bookstore lost 50,000 last year mostly because of shoplifting according to robert bell bookstore director normally most retail businesses report losses due to minor clerical errors but i think the substantial part of our losses are due to shoplifting bell said records seem to be the most popular item for shoplifters bell said we have tried to cut down shoplifting of records by moving them to different areas of the bookstore but it has not helped bell said because of the large shoplifting losses and low record sales the bookstore may discontinue the record section m january bell said although the bethlehem police depart ment advised the bookstore to have a guard m uniform the bookstore guard is m plainclothes bell said i do not want to see the bookstore turned into an armed camp uniformed guards turn me off i do not think uniforms are necessary because the bookstore has controlled entrances and exits and i respect the clientele we serve he said in the past years there has been a fairly steady number of shoplifters ap prehended bell said punishment is usually a fine the size of which is dependent on the amount stolen and the existence of previous offenses bell added the bookstore works with the local magistrate m shoplifting no information will be released on shoplifters because the store director bell reported lhat the bookstore lost 50,000 last year primarily because of shoplifting zettlemoyer blasts edpol report suggesting grad program changes by joe burke albert zettlemoyer university provost and vice president attacked the educational policy committee's edpol subcommittee on admissions report for its recommendations on the re-evaluation and possible elimination of graduate programs zettlemoyer spoke during the edpol meeting wednesday zettlemoyer pointed out that research and graduate programs at the university contain the majority of its faculty if graduate programs are eliminated graduate teaching assistants will be eliminated he continued this will bring about a need for more fulltime teachers raising the cost of education at the university john bonge edpol chairman and professor of management pointed out that though the report contains comprehensive material it is not ready for distribution to the entire university he said a sub committee will be appointed to create a clear statement of the recommendations implications and rationale behind the report zettlemoyer noted graduate programs are valuable to the undergraduate schools m two major areas — new courses and equipment he cited the polymers program involving the departments of chemistry and chemical engineering he said it was graduate research m polymers which brought about polymer courses on the undergraduate level assistant provost nan van gieson added that george watkins sherman fairchild professor m physics brought a great deal of research equipment from general electric to the university the equipment is also available for un dergraduate use ferdinand beer chairman of mechanical engineering and a member of the admissions subcommittee said he agreed that the graduate program is necessary but there should be more concern innovation and senior faculty participation m our undergraduate programs than there is now zettlemoyer also attacked the report's recommendation that programs for rewarding good teaching should be developed he pointed out that the present university salary system is based on merit based on the average raise an nounced by the university president each year and recommendations from department chairmen deans and the provost salary raises can range from zero on up he added brian brockway dean of the business college and chairman of the report sub committee agreed saying the recom mendation should have mentioned con tinuing merit policies rather than creating them minority recruitment policy needs review trustee says the thrust of the university's recruitment policy for minority students needs to be re-evaluated but it is not necessary to hire a fulltime recruiter according to reginald jennings 70 university young alumnus trustee lehigh has a genuine commitment to recruit blacks but as to whether it is using the most effective way is questionable jennings said in the late 19605 when jennings was a student the university was spending most of its time recruiting blacks from the rural south and the inner city he said those students had to make too great an ad justment to the university and the bethlehem area jennings said lehigh should direct its effort to those who would find it attractive rather than trying to change itself or trying to attract people who wouldn't fit m he suggested the market of eligible black and other minority students who might be attracted to lehigh is tapped by ivy league schools so lehigh can't really compete jennings noted the burden of recruitment should not rest entirely on the university though jennings said the alumni association is the greatest recruiting agent lehigh has he stated jennings noted that visibility of black alumni is important he said black students on campus feel more at ease knowing there are black alumni m ad ministrative positions who are sym pathetic to their needs and who will listen to their problems jennings a lawyer with the
