the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday april 19 1994 all the lehigh news first the fma does it help or hurt greek system vol 101 no 42 by christopher cococcia and jennifer lev news writers please see greeks page 6 many of the problems the greek system used to have house treasurers now find themselves with much more responsibilities weaver or ganizes a meeting to help the house treasurers monitor the house accounts the main focus for treasurers during the spring semester is to create feasible budgets for the following fiscal year that begin july 1 and end june 30 weaver said it's the treasurer's responsibility to formu the fraternity management association was created 26 years ago by greek alumni in orderto assist treasurers of individual fraterni ties and sororities in handling the financial transactions that their respective houses deal with everyday however problems between the greek system and the fma have risen over the past the outstanding balances the lehigh greek alumni counsel there fore created the fma to provide an advisory and consultative service to the greek system the purpose of the fma is to promote sound financial stability of the greek system at lehigh said john j weaver executive direc tor of the fma before the fma was formed there was utter chaos on the hill as far as bill paying vendors were suing fraternities for outstanding balances though the fma has been able to stop years as greek students question what respon sibilities and obligations the fma has the fma was created as a non-profit orga nization which is independent of lehigh uni versity before its creation fraternities had to handle their own business transactions this independent process of handling the funds formulated a lot of problems as treasur ers in the houses were unable to successfully manage the house's money many lawsuits came about as food suppli ers of the greek organizations had to claim on speaker cautions helping aids service center please see speaker page 6 ally i think student journalists and the advisers are doing a better job of serving your readers than anyone has the right to expect given the limita tion you have to work with one bright spot goodman said is that many more students are will ing to challenge instances on censor ship in their newspapers in the last few years we are seeing more student journalists who arc willing to say censorship is wrong and we are not going to tolerate it and maybe will go to court to fight it he said goodman told the audience of student journalists and advisers from lehigh and area high schools that they should never stand idly by when they are censored he said telling the professional press about instances of censorship can create a public rela tions disaster for a high school or college which does not want the com munity to know it censors students last year the morning call and the brown and white printed an editorial from the emmaus high sexual relationships on campus abortion counsel ing advertisements stories about students found guilty of sexual assaults not politically correct editorials these are topics that have prompted college and university of ficials to censor student journalists said mark goodman an attorney and executive director of the student press law center in washington d.c in the university center thurs day night goodman said that despite the 20-year effort by the student press law center to protect and foster student press freedoms the student press continues to be attacked we're still fighting the same battles on campuses across the coun try as well as new ones goodman said despite this wave of censor ship student journalism is flourish ing he said the scars of the battle have made student journalists and their advisers stronger and smarter he said re by alan w verostick assistant news editor participants in the shoot out were given 15 tries to shoot from various areas of the court each shot was worth a certain number of points with the total possible points being 18 there was a 5 entrance fee scott grambling 93 won the event with 13 points earning round trip tickets for two on usair to any where in the continental u.s brian wisneski 96 and susan zimmerman from moravian college each won a stay in comfort suites in a room equipped with a jacuzzi for second place twenty-five other competitors received a free dominoes pizza for finishing in third place during the fundraiser a special contest was held where five partici chi phi fraternity and usair raised 8,232 for the aids service center of the lehigh valley as 400 people went to lower grace hall sunday to shoot some hoops in ef forts to win prizes ranging from a new car to a few free pizzas brent rosenthal 94 a member of chi phi came up with the idea for the fundraiser and coordinated the event i couldn't t think of anything more appropriate than raising money for aids rosenthal said aids will affect all of us and i wanted to make an event that could be an annual fundraiser pants were picked by lehigh presi dent peter likins and hellertown mayor don zimpfer the five con testants were given the chance to win a chrysler neon if they could make a 75-foot shot but the car remained unclaimed as their luck ran out rosenthal was able to present a check from various donations and sponsors to the aids service center during the event this event was a glaring suc cess rosenthal said we had great help from the president's office stu dent life greek affairs peer lead ers community relations the health center
