brown and white vol 100 no 39 tuesday april 6 1993 lehigh university student senate chooses officers by lori mccarthy news writer lehigh's fifth student senate ended last thursday with the election of new officers the new officers of the sixth student senate are as follows heather zaslansky 94 president ed monahan 94 vice president tammy canna 94 secretary kevin chick 95 treasurer and jeff hunter 96 parliamentarian in other business the rugby club was cited for violating senate's alcohol policy on march 12 team members say ap proximately five players were arrested for underage drinking on a lehigh van on their way back from a game at franklin and marshall college upon the advice of terrence curran associatedean of studentlife senate mem bers voted to freeze transportation privi leges for one year with any further viola tions resulting in the loss of recognition of the clubby the university former senate president ken hoexter 93 recommended to the senate that in addition to quran's actions funding should be frozen for a year according to senalorglennmackenzie 94 the latter request was too severe as funding is necessary for the club to exist i think it's a little harsh to suspend funds he said dissolving the team is not the answer according to rugby club captain fritz lloyd 93 the incident was the fault of the team's younger members who were left to drive the van home many of the team's older members were busy taking lloyd to the hospital because of an injury we the rugby club have many explicit rules drawn up lloyd said it's a shame that i did not fully explain the rules to them lloyd assured senate members that the beer was not provided by the club but by the spectators and that no drinking was being done on the van i assume full responsibility for the van he said the freshman driving was sober and wasn't aware he was doing anything wrong also present at the meeting on behalf of the rugby team were members brian donnelly 93 ed penberthy 94 and tom kyle 93 here reforms trofimeenko said he said the people of russia lost inter est in their government and that many of them have experienced socio-political unrest before economic conditions in russia are so bad that many people are being buried in plastic bags because of the expense ac cording to trofimeenko the first thing that yeltsin did when russia broke apart was to put in economic reform trofimeenko said the stingy russian parliament has not passed many of yeltsin's reforms trofemeenko said and as a result the economy has worsened since yelsin as sumed power inflation has increased 100-fold while the wage increase has only increased 15 times according to trofimeenko the government has lost money be cause goods are scarce and prices are skyrocketing many people's lifetime ac cumulations have been wiped out trofimeenko said he said nearly 80 percent of all savings deposits were less than 2,500 rubles be fore yeltsin took office the average savings account has dropped to only 25 rubles in today's market raw materials have been traded through russia but there is still a problem since many of the finished products are not landing in the local russian supermarket troflmeenko said eighty percent of corporations deal with raw materials where there is no market for it in russia instead the prod ucts are going to other markets trofimeenko said trofimeenko said russia is far from being a capitalistic society he also said russia is too unstable since many laws change weekly and differ in every region of the country there have been over 300 amend ments to the present constitution it is
