the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 101 no 10 tuesday october 19 1993 water main rupture runs trembley dry students can shower but still cannot drink the water by geoffrey colon assistant news editor the water joseph said residential services issued notices to all residents of tiembley telling them about the measures taken and that it was safe to shower and do laundry students m each apartment were given a gallon of bottled water by residential services and told to use it to get water from the univer sity center or to boil the water from their taps before they drink it jeff zeigler trembley park's hall director said the students have been very cooperative during the event i was really surprised of the students un derstanding of the problem zeigler said no one had water for way over 12 hours a water main break before pacing break left trembley park residents without water for a day and still prevents them from drinking the water m their apartments a water main between apartments 17 and 24 ruptured oct 7 and needed to be replaced said david joseph director of residential ser vices the crew worked until 3 a.m to restore water service to the apartments but joseph said there is a lot of work that remains to be done to be on the safe side we're asking stu dents as a precautionary measure not to drink zeigler said the malfunction was lucky to occur before pacing break because many stu dents were going home james carrier 94 and chris newmyer 94 who live m trembley 24 said they learned of the dilemma when they saw men working outside their apartment at lunch there were two guys checking the water with these stethoscope devices to see if the water was flowing newmyer said they we're peering down manholes for an hour carrier said they dug from two m the baw photo by ceoffery colon students survey the construction outside their trembley park apartments local bands battle it out at contest by susan mandel news writer some of the hottest bands m the lehigh valley took the stage at the former sigma alpha mv fraternity house parking lot saturday night to compete m lehigh s battle of the bands the band green revolution took first place m the competition and walked away from the event with 300 m prize money the event which was co-spon sored by late night at lehigh and the lnterfraternity council lasted from 10 p.m until after mid night it had a positive response among students and organizers some of the bands were really talented and going to something like this is a nice change of pace from the usual social life that the school has to offer said seth deysher 97 some students felt the decline of fraternity parties had a positiveeffect on the strong student turnout with so few parties being held on the hill now having events like this gives both greek and non-greek students a place to socialize and meet one another said rick lewis 94 for some like master of ceremo nies angie warner 94 an event like this provides a break from the usual hill routine this was a great display of talent at a non-alcoholic event on the hill f m also impressed by the great turnout of students warner said the event opened with the read ing pa band diggins they began the evening by play ing wasted away save the world and i like the noise among a few others their perfor mance took third place m the compe tition green revolution the eventual champ rocked the crowd with original songs such as joe's theme no more time and oceans of lies inside out a band from trenton n.j entertained the audience with original tunes like nightlife and over the edge inside out placed second m the competition and took home 200 wrapping up the evening was af a lehigh band they performed their original songs overdue me deja-vu and is my hat ont'all the bands who played m the event were hoping to win but for some the exposure was a reward m itself we'd like to use the battle of the baw photo by shideh hashemi green revolution's joe kirn 94 and dave morris 94 senate prepares new members sets sights on future by rebecca murphy news writer student senators learned the rules of parliamentary procedure and were instructed on the administration's attitude toward holding off-campus students accountable for breaking university regulations at their meet ing wednesday chris mulvihill an expert m par liamentary procedure from harris burg delivered a 45-minute lecture on the eight basic motions that sen ate members will use most frequently m their meetings the presentation taught the con cepts to new senate members and refreshed the memories of the in cumbents i was m student council m high school said sarah weidmann 97 we just did little things like motion second the
