the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 46 tuesday may 4 1999 all the lehigh news first met orchestra plays in zoellner by amanda henry assistant news editor the metropolitan opera orchestra under the direc tion of artistic director and conductor james levine performed its only american concert this season out side of carnegie hall at the zoellner arts center's baker hall friday the met gala ended zoellner s 1998-99 premiere per formance season which included performances by lehigh based groups including the lu philharmonic orchestra jazz ensemble chamber orchestra and wind ensembles principal clarinetist of the met ricardo morales joined the orchestra for a solo performance of mozart's clarinet concerto in a major k.622 the orchestra per formed mozart's symphony no 41 in c major k.551 also known as jupiter and brahms symphony no 2 in d major op 73 a diverse crowd attended the concert including stu dents faculty alumni lehigh contributors and non lehigh affiliated attendees eva bornstein the executive director of the zoellner arts center was very pleased with those who were in attendance i felt very honored the whole evening was spectacu lar bornstein said i was a real treat to see students in b&w photo by loring day mandira ray 00 president gregory farrington and anthony hillman 01 were among the many who attended the metropolitan opera orchestra's only performance outside carnegie hall on friday night in the zoellner arts center sigma alpha mu holds its first faculty dinner after minor setbacks the attempt to form closer faculty relationships was considered a success by adrienne garber news writer sigma alpha mu fraternity held their first brotherhood-faculty mixer on thursday night in hopes of fostering closer relationships with their professors and the administration while at the same time they had the opportunity to show fraternity life in a good light mark spedaliere 01 brotherhood chair of sammy was in charge of orga nizing the event many professors have the animal house mentality about fraternity houses up here occasions like these are our chances to prove them otherwise spedaliere said there were minor setbacks to having the dinner spedaliere said originally they had planned the mixer for a week earlier but because it was so late in the semester events already planned like awards dinners postponed the event it was just a very busy week so next year we plan to have it earlier in the semes ter spedaliere said sammy sent out 26 invitations to fac ulty and staff but only nine of those invited attended president farrington was one of many who fell victim to scheduling problems he and his wife jean mingled with the brothers and other faculty members over shrimp cocktail but had to leave before din ner because of prior engagements the percentages were a little disappoint ing but the overall turnout of the whole evening was very nice spedaliere said kenneth sinclair professor of account ing was in attendance over dinner he explained to the broth ers that the idea of dining with faculty is not a new one he reminisced about pub nights years ago when on thursday nights fraternities would invite professors for dinner as popularity for the get-togethers grew fraternities began holding them on wednesday nights too over time the houses began fighting over the professors to attend the dinners and the tradition was quelled spedaliere thinks for the practice of pub nights to be renewed all the fraternity houses need is one dinner to break the ice one of the problems is that many professors that have this view animal house may not be willing to come up spedaliere said the benefits of these mixers are two sided brothers have the opportunity to show themselves and greek life in a posi tive way and professors have the opportuni ty to become more approachable and reach students on a new level i think it's a great idea said dean of students mark erickson i still have close relationships with deans that mentored me when i was in college it's good to make those close connections matthieu bridier 02 thinks the experi ence was a positive one i believe connecting with faculty on a personal level is key during dinner bridier and erickson dis cussed various topics ranging from fresh men dorms and orientation to sophomore pledging and greek life jaron taaffe 01 invited his political science professor frank colon he's just a cool guy taaffe said at dinner they talked of current events issues like the shooting in littleton colo i wanted his point of view on it taaffe said i talk to him after class a lot he was interesting to talk with at dinner too spedaliere commented on the brothers feeling after the dinner was over spedaliere
