by unanimous vote the arizona board of regents approved the appointment of peter likins as the 18th president of the university of arizona july 22 likins 61 has been president of lehigh university since 1982 he will replace manuel pacheco who left aug 1 to assume the presidency of the university of missouri system the regents reached a tentative agree ment with likins july 21 specifying the terms and conditions of the presidential • for more on president likins decision to leave lehigh see pullout 81-84 appointment according to the agreement likins will take office oct i serving through june 30 2000 likins was officially offered the posi tion during a conference call with the board of regents i believe peter likins will be one of the most extraordinary presidents the university of arizona has ever had said regent john munger as ua president likins will earn nearly 28,000 more than pacheco however he is taking a significant pay cut in accepting the position likins will earn 195,000 plus benefits at lehigh he earned 275,000 plus benefits likins said his first order of business at ua will be the education of the president that's always the president's first responsibility likins said that's what i did when i came here to lehigh and i have to do it over again because arizona's a very very different place likins said he looks forward to meeting with faculty position two new deans assume offices deans named to colleges of business arts and sciences by lisa a jones news editor administration shake-ups this summer have resulted in new deans in both the college of business and economics and the college of arts and sciences patti ota former interim provost is now vice provost and dean of the college of business and economics bobb carson is the new herbert j and ann l siegel dean of the college of arts and sciences ota helped president likins search for a business school dean to replace jim schmouer who left to become dean of the ha worth college of business at western michigan university early efforts last spring to find a candi date for dean within lehigh's business col lege failed although several faculty were qualified ota said the politics within the college made it unlikejy that any of these individuals could step in and get the support of the staff ota said thus the search for a new dean became external she said however several people including department chairpersons and trustees sug gested to likins that ota be named to the position likins said as a former professor of electrical engi neering ota said she was surprised to be considered to lead the college with which she had essentially no affiliation from an academic-background per spective i was unqualified ota said ota will be dean for only a two to three year term at which point a new dean will be named during her short leadership ota hopes to restore the morale of the faculty and staff in the business school i would like to get people in the college to work together effectively which hasn't always been the case in the past ota said so that the spirit of cooperation will be there after i leave and be in place for the new dean there are problems within the business college which were cited in february by the american assembly of collegiate schools of business a nonprofit organiza tion which evaluated lehigh's business pro grams over the past two years the aacsb accredited the business school for only three additional years instead of the normal 10-year term lehigh can retain the full 10 year accreditation if the problems are corrected diversity of faculty and students pro gram integration among disciplines assess ment procedures teaching-evaluation processes and methods toward continual reform are areas where the business named vice provost and dean of the college of business and economics bethlehem mayor to be affairs v.p by kristen chanley associate editor and t.j furman editor in chief ken smith 61 has resigned as mayor of bethlehem effective oct 1 to replace michael g bolton 65 as vice president of public affairs at lehigh bolton left after 25 years of service to join safeguard scientifics inc on sept 1 william c hittinger 44 who will also begin his term as interim president on oct 1 made the announcement at a press confer ence wednesday there was a spontaneous expression of interest on the part of ken smith of his pos sibility of fitting into the lehigh structure hittinger said he saw the opportunity i saw the opportunity and it was a match almost made in heaven hittinger felt smith's connections local ly in bethlehem with the state government in harrisburg and with national govern ment in washington d.c made him an attractive candidate for lehigh it just struck me that there was no one who could even begin to approach what ken smith can bring to this job hittinger said smith's sentiments on the position of vice president are mutual if i am as hittinger has indicated the see
