the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 102 no 1 all the lehigh news first friday september 9 1994 interim dean heads arts and sciences college by andrea mc cloud assistant news editor w beall fowler professor of physics will serve as the interim dean of the college of arts and sci ences replacing former dean james d gunton who left lehigh to accept the position of provost at kenyon college m ohio as the temporary dean this year fowler hopes to change people's opinions about the college of arts and sciences to a more positive one fowler feels the strength of the arts and sciences college at lehigh has been underrated and he wanted to change that . we have to show people that we have strong programs fowler said the fact is we do have a lot of substance fowler said our gradu ates do very well we have an out standing faculty and i think we have to just keep reminding people of that the faculty are sharp and involved and get the students involved by utilizing the media and the admissions department fowler be lieves the arts and sciences college can expose its rigorous and demand ing programs to the public first and foremost we have to do good things and then get the word out he said fowler plans to continue several of gunton's programs such as the freshmen seminar and the college scholar program i thought the pre vious dean did a very good job he said james gunton put m some excellent programs which we will support the freshmen seminar is very important for a couple of reasons it ensures every freshman is m a highly interactive learning experience as well as giving the faculty the oppor tunity to teach subjects they wouldn't normally teach fowler said the college scholar program allows out standing students to have a very rich academic experience fowler hopes to ease into the po sition by creating as few changes to the system as possible m the begin ning the best way to make a tran sition is to make it as seamless as possible i don t want to make change for the sake of making change fowler said an undergraduate at lehigh fowler returned m 1966 after doing graduate work at the university of rochester and post doctorate research at the university of illinois at champaign-urbana the lehigh administration is pleased that fowler accepted the po sition and has confidence that he will have a positive effect on the college m the future lehigh president peter likins said beall fowler has been a lead ing citizen of the university for many years and he will serve with distinc tion as our dean of arts and sci ences vice president and provost alan pense said i have the greatest re spect for his abilities and style he really understands the faculty and their needs likins believes fowler knows how to balance the needs of students as well as those of the university beall understands the importance of scholarly research and service m this university and at the same time w beall fowler interim dean college of arts and sciences he recognizes the centrality of our responsibility to the students at le high likins said pense and the provost's office is m the process of forming a search committee which will be m charge of finding a permanent replacement photo counru of office of mhdia kmations bookstore changes offer a more modern image by sarah zabrenski news editor renovations to the lehigh uni versity bookstore are expected to drastically change the face of cam pus shopping two phases of the renovation project will offer customers a new layout including increased store space shorter lines more variety and easier shopping last december the university put together a steering committee that decided to keep the bookstore as a self-operating business the commit tee then proceeded to look for ways to dramatically change the look of the store robert bell director of the book store believes that the bookstore needed to be updated to keep up with student needs the bookstore was mildly out of date bell said we began looking at what we could do to bring the store into the 21st century the committee hired jon greenberg and associates inc a design firm to determine what reno vations were possible to create a more modern store and to extend the sales space deciding that it would be impos sible to move merchandise out of the store during renovations and then move back m when the changes were completed the committee agreed that the work would be done m phases it will be a full renovation from the back to the front and the front to the back bell said the entire space will be renovated phase i which began m early june is already completed renova tions include moving the offices to the back of the store moving ship ping and receiving and temporarily modifying the text department to make access to books easier for stu dents several new registers were installed to significantly decrease checkout lines the bookstore went to a network baw photo by da vi d york students purchasing books find shorter faster lines due to new registers at the lehigh bookstore senate finds empty seats at meeting by andrew j cooke news editor student senate vice president teresa araco 95 stressed the need for increased contact between sena tors and their constituencies wednes day at the first student senate meet ing of the scholastic year araco believes senators should meet with their constituencies once every two weeks and relate what the senate is trying to accomplish the senate is waiting for the freshmen senate elections on sept 24 to fill the 1 1 empty senate seats not just the 1 1 seats allocated for freshmen senators stood empty but 1 1 other members were absent and araco and treasurer jason euculano 96 were detained and came late hence the student senate opened the new year with only 2 1 out of 34 active members present for roll call according to student senate president kevin chick 95 and dean of student life mark erickson the renovations to grace hall are con tinuing at a good pace and should be finished by early november the original date of completion was cited as oct 31 the official opening will be a noontime ceremony held lehigh lafayette weekend erickson said we want to hold a special ceremony when a lot of alumni will be around to see the improvements chick brought senate up to date on progress made on last year ' s ideas including the proposed athletic mas cot we had planned to get numer ous groups involved including the senate the ifc interfraternity coun cil and panhel and team captains and have a contest originally we
