seminar 4 10 to 5 p.m 208 packard lab united way luncheon noon rathbone hall 3 professors retire the office of public information announced the retire ments of three faculty members since the end of the spring semester professor of chemistry and director of the color science laboratory in the center for surface and coatings research eugene allen retired from his duties june 30 listed in who's who in america allen joined the universi ty's faculty in 1967 after 22 years with american cyanamid co where he received its senior research award he is a member of the american chemical society optical society of america inter-society color council iscc american association of textile chemists and colorists and sigma xi honorary research society director of the university computer center and professor of industrial engineering ben wechsler retired on june 11 as a professor emeritus of industrial engineering wechsler joined the faculty in 1974 as an assistant profes sor was promoted to associate professor in 1976 and to profes sor in 1981 he became director of the computer center in 1979 previously he served as commandant and professor of mil itary science of the army rotc unit for three years retiring as professor emeritus of classics after seven years as chairman of the department of classics is edna deangeli a faculty member since 1965 she is a member of the american archaeological associa tion vergilian society american association of university professors and american philological association junior class shows identity by renee covino the class of 84 is beginning to show some sort of class identity says kevin clayton junior class president after freshman year things were slow but we're right on the mark now along with the other class officers — theresa kilcullen 84 vice president lisa dively 84 secretary brian flynn 84 treas urer — the junior class also has an executive board something which is not usually estab lished until senior year if at all the board consists of 25 members of the class who meet with the officers about twice a month to discuss and plan upcoming class events and activities andy whitely 84 a member of the execu tive board said it's a great idea it involves a lot more people whitely explained that the board helps the junior class officers in two ways first the board helps by providing their time and efforts and secondly they come up with more ideas than the officers ever could on their own the officers and i have been very pleased and happy with all the help clayton said without it there would be no activities if one member of the class benefits from it the board , we feel it was worthwhile he added so far the officers along with barbara turanchik assistant director of the alumni association and junior class advisor have come up with a handful of activities for the semester — one of them a wine and cheese party with president likins at rathbone hall it will give us a chance to meet with dr likins in a different atmosphere and to mingle with other faculty members as well clayton said scheduled for sept 10 the party is free to all junior class members clayton described the class as financially sound as a result of a strong treasury and enthusiastic fund-raisers the class has already had great success with painters caps which were sold during fresh man orientation week we are financially sound because people in our class realize that raising money benefits their class as a whole clayton said in addition to the wine and cheese event the class has several pubnites an atlantic city casino night and a pre-game cocktails/tailgate party planned we hope to spend the money to benefit members of the class clayton said we don't want it just to accumulate members of the class can find out more abut the activities through the newsletter that the class hopes to continue putting out once a month clayton cites the biggest problem in the class as the lack of communication between members of the class and the officers who serve them we'd like to see more people come out and get involved clayton said if anyone has any further ideas they are welcome to step forth — that's what we're here for — to work with them alumni giving sets record the university recording the highest yearly donations in its history was named among the top four colleges in the nation in 1982 for the national general excellence award given by the council for advancement and support of education the award was based on the university's performance in alumni donations of almost 11 million during the previous fis cal year with over 17,000 sour ces contributing to the highest total of dollars donated in one year in the school's history presented july 13 at the coun cil's conference the other schools selected were brigham young university johns hop kins university and the univer sity of notre dame also at the conference the university received the mobius strip trophy given by u.s steel for alumni giving programs fifty seven percent of lehigh alumni contributed compared to the national average for american colleges of 18 per cent 1 the brown and white tuesday august 31 1982 university
