_________^___ __________________ ernest a wagner infq res information managemnt hhhhmhi ———--•- _^^^ linderman library n0 030 m the biuwn mm white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 33 all the lehigh news first friday february 26 1999 aids speakers warn about risks of alcohol sex by alexis novick lifestyle editor two fraternity men from indiana university exposed over 800 lehigh students to the harsh reality of alcohol and aids in their presentation friendship in the age of aids tuesday night at zoellner arts center joel goldman and t.j sullivan are good friends and while only goldman is hiv positive they both are liv ing with hiv the two met when sullivan was a freshman and goldman was a senior joel was the very first person i met when i was in college sullivan said it turned out he was a great first person to meet ten years later both of their lives changed when goldman told sullivan he was hiv positive the news came as quite a shock to sullivan who said he thought aids was something that happened to other people mainly in bigger cities i really didn't think it was going to hit that close to me he said i certainly never thought it would touch the life of one of my friends goldman said his biggest mistake in college was mix ing sex and alcohol irresponsibly when i would drink alcohol i could rationalize about anything he said goldman said he never realized when he slept with someone he was sleeping with every person that person stenger resigns effective in june college of engineering and applied sciences searches for new dean by brooke herman and jennifer o'brien associate editors harvey stenger dean of the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied sciences will resign from his position effective june 30 1999 dave williams department chairper son of materials science acknowledged that stenger's decision will be a great loss for the department he's been a great friend to materials science and engineering and i'm sorry to see him go williams said stenger has been a member of the lehigh faculty since 1984 and was pro moted to full professor in 1992 he will be retaining his position as a professor provost nelson markley said the department supports stenger's decision harvey has come to the decision that it's time to move on and we respect that markley said since assuming the position of dean in november 1 994 stenger has partici pated in shaping a number of important events on campus he played a major role in the october 1998 decision of alumnus peter c rossin 48 to donate 25 million to the program which established an endowment fund and named the college in his honor stenger is credited with the incep tion of the dean's scholar program originally created to draw exceptional high school seniors into the engineering program but which was eventually implemented by the other colleges all departments in the college also received reaccredidation during the 1995-1996 academic year under stenger's leadership in the abet reac credidation review markley said the department is now making plans to find a replacement in september we will launch a national search to bring the best person here to be dean markley said nominations will be sought within the department for an interim dean who will take over the position in september and retain the position until a permanent replacement takes over in the summer of 2000 amy distasio 00 a chemical engi neering major said stenger has played a major role in her progress at lehigh dean stenger was always con cerned about every student's welfare distasio said he took a personal inter est in each student's academic career dean stenger was always there when i needed advice and has been a source of support throughout my years at lehigh i hope to continue my association with him in his position as a professor in the department of chemical engineering see aids page 5 photo courtesy of media relations harvey stenger dean of the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied sciences has resigned b&w photo by vicky steel bob dylan came to stabler arena last thursday with special guest natalie merchant more than 6,000 fans young and old came to see the show the audience was thrilled by the legendary performance see story page 9 mmmem^dhmmmi^mm ■■■i_s~k-__a quick wrestling team beat presentation educates bob dylan performed i j1 the university of audience about the at stabler arena last m } pittsburgh 23-13 media's effect on body thursday a j iff y is an actuai unit sunday see page 24 image see page 3 see page 9 of t,me for 1/1 00th of a second sports 17-24 news 1-8 lifestyle 9-16 men's basketball 17 world news briefs 2 hidden treasure 10 mjm ».__._ tennis 22 speaker 4 horoscopes 11 eaw source •^ track 24 ifc meeting 5 face in the crowd 15 sbt.bhmedia.com
