case by lisa a jones editor in chief football player lan eason oo was found not guilty wednesday of harassing a female student nov 21 at a dance following the lehigh-lafayette football game victory district justice nancy matos gonzalez decided the case i am confident that the defendant is not guilty gonzalez said in her ruling randi evans o2 pressed harassment charges against eason nov 23 she testified wednesday that eason punched her during the final of three encounters between the two at the black student union-sponsored dance held at the stage door evans said she first approached eason that night attempting to cut in while eason was dancing with a woman evans and eason argued and evans eventually walked away she said later evans said she approached eason a second time while he was talking to her friend less than 30 minutes later eason walked over to evans while she was stand ing near a column on the dance floor and began talking to her she said i was facing toward him and he was tow ering over me evans said i began to be afraid when he started getting aggressive evans said eason first pressed the bot tom of a water bottle he was holding into her left eye and proceeded to twist it then eason punched her in the right eye with a closed-fist evans said my eye swelled up and became black stie said i couldn't see very well the prosecution entered into evidence three photographs of evans which they said were taken following the incident and showed her right eye swollen medical records from st luke's hospital that noted evans's facial contusion following the inci dent were presented to the court evans also testified that eason had been drinking alcohol prior to the altercation eason's testimony gave a different ver sion of the night's events he was not drinking at the dance but did drink two beers beforehand eason said eason recounted two encounters with evans and said that she approached him both times i did point the water bottle at her and i guess that got her angry eason testified eason said he was afraid of evans when they talked so he backed up and put his hands up the pictures of evans were shown to staff member passes away by allison rabbvovitz assistant news editor lehigh university staff member kay lorraine sears died thursday dec 31 in easton hospital at the age of 50 sears dedicated 15 years of service to lehigh working in the bursar's office for 10 years and in the ulrich student center post office for the remaining five years grief-stricken by the unexpected death of her co-worker postal assistant marysue pauser has yet to overcome her initial feelings of shock it was totally unexpected without warning and i was stunned she said it was too sudden too quick i still can't believe she is actually gone pauser said sears played a key role in the smooth transaction between the postal environ ment and lehigh students she was a hard worker pauser said i could count on her for everything and she's going to be very hard to replace in addition to her strong work ethic sears personality will always be remembered as an enhancement to the daily atmosphere a happy-go-lucky individual with a radiant smile sears was often referred to as the life of the party already suffering the loss of a co-worker pauser must also cope with the tragic distress of losing a close friend working side by side for five years the two were able to get to know each other very well in a stressful environment you're going to have the ups and downs but we still managed to become close friends pauser said anne noon coordinator of administrative university relations instantly bonded with sears and reflects the grief of pauser in the abrupt death of the person she called her best friend finding it difficult to look at her time with sears as just a memory noon paused frequently while sadly recounting the past kay was the most giving person i've ever met in my life noon said if someone was in trouble she was always the first one to put her hand out according to noon sears motto was what the hey i'll do anything once this display of fun-loving optimism made sears a true pleasure to have as a friend 1 can't believe i'll never hear her say that anymore noon said she always made the best of everything always came out with a smile always bubbling with happiness sears mar riage to john d sears further intensified her joy for life noon recalled that she had never seen sears as happy as she was when she was married to john the couple had been married two years last may sears memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to be touched by this special member of the lehigh community kay will always be missed pauser said baughn helps district thrive by debbie ludvigson news editor juan baughn a lecturer in the college of education was drafted last fall to serve as superintendent of the chester upland school district baughn has been a professor at lehigh for three years the majority of his courses have focused on principalship and multicultural issues baughn has a reputation among lehigh faculty staff and students as being energetic and inspiring baughn is also no stranger to the chester upland unified school system in the 1970s he worked at chester high school as a basketball coach and a successful administrator the chester upland school board recruited baughn to revitalize their academically and fiscally ailing district george white associate professor of education and human services has worked with baughn for three years and believes that he will be able to help the
