brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 21 friday november 20 1998 all the lehigh news first by jessica lascar news writer boys and girls gobble turkey the sisters of alpha phi sorority brought a turkey dinner and a festive mood to the second annual thanksgiving dinner at the allentown boys and girls club tuesday heather terrible family youth intervention director for the boys and girls club said the children had been looking forward to the event for a while not only for the chance to interact with college students but for a full meal as well some of these kids don't get three meals a day terrible said most of the children seemed content just to have some one to converse with and were excited to tell stories about themselves alex corpora 1 1 , a member of the boys and girls club enjoyed himself the food is very good and i am meeting some very nice people corpora said the sisters were pleased at the turnout of the event and felt it was very rewarding it is such a great experience to help these people liz simpson 00 said the children are so appreciative gerry kiefer alpha phi's cook who prepared all of the food for the dinner said it took a lot of effort but felt it was well worth it i thought that the night was a big success kiefer said it was a very caring night and it was very warmly received tara lukievics 01 event coordinator and community ser vice chairperson for alpha phi thought that the event was successful and not a difficult one to plan everyone was more than willing to help lukievics said all the sisters brought smiles to the families and the children the boys and girls club provides a number of programs for its members ranging from academic to social to recre ational as well as a positive safe environment for children ' on an average day the club can expect about 250 children between the ages of 6-17 to show up after school the club also sponsors trips for its members such as lehigh football games kirk flemming unit director of the boys and girls club hopes that the dinner becomes a tradition because he feels it is important for people to get involved in communities such as this one flernrning encourages college students to work at the club because they can serve as positive role models for the children if people keep working and caring there can be a future for these children flemming said flemming also believes that those who volunteer their time to help the children learn valuable lessons from them many people don't know what is going on he said you get to see a whole different world here amie kutzner 01 felt that events like these not only ben efit the receivers but the givers as well kutzner said i walked away not only with a good expe rience but with the knowledge that i may have made some one's day a little brighter global village interns needed by jessica williamson news writer applications for lacocca leaders program to be accepted the lacocca institute held information sessions in whitaker laboratory this week about the global village summer internship program representatives from the global village for future leaders of business and industry encouraged students from all academic disciplines to apply for positions as lacocca interns we're looking for students or young professionals with a sharp eye on their future christine pense programs offi cer for the lacocca institute said we're looking for people that are ethical opinionated and passionate about what they do or what they want out of life no more than 75 individuals will be selected for the six week leadership program which is offered to international college students graduate students or young professionals ages 19 to 30 the goal of the program is to enhance leadership and entrepreneurial skills build knowledge and understand ing of business and industry and develop global net working relationships participants will interact with approximately 80 top executives throughout the six weeks and engage in leadership workshops cultural activities discussion groups and hands-on experiences they will also have the opportunity to visit several businesses skills such as negotiating and teamwork will also be taught and perfected pense said the program recruits people from all over the world in order to promote diversity american students usually make up approximately 20 percent of the group she said the fee for the program is 6,000 which covers learning activities on-campus housing and tickets to special events scholarships are offered to those who are unable to afford the program of the scholarships available one of them is guaranteed to go to a lehigh student so those who are interested are strongly encouraged to apply richard brandt an executive instructor at the lacocca institute believes the global village program is probably one of the most intense programs one can attend the people you meet could provide a life-changing experience for you brandt said you can't put a dollar value on spending two months with these kinds of people matt estadt 02 came to the information session not knowing what to expect but said he is glad he attended the meeting i'm looking for every opportunity i can get in busi ness estadt said what really impresses me about the program is you have close contact not only with executives but with
