brown and white vol 106 no 14 tuesday october 27 1998 all the lehigh news first huston uses personal struggle to inspire others by alexis novick assistant design editor river huston a well-known public speaker and educa tor spoke on issues relating to hiv/aids in packard auditorium thursday her lecture entitled a positive life focused on the impact one's self-esteem has on his or her body and sexuality huston was diagnosed with hiv in 1991 and believes that her late husband who died thc previous year infected her in 1985 she described to the audience her experience of what it was like to receive her positive test results they called my number and she the medical technician looked down at her form and she looked devastated huston said she looked up and she looked at me and i felt like someone kicked me in the stomach my world fell to pieces huston however did not fall to pieces after dealing with the initial devastation of finding out she was hiv positive she began to give inspirational speeches nationwide adam sporn 02 was influenced by her speech she really made me more aware of how a higher self esteem and more confidence in ourselves can truly benefit our sexual lives sporn said ernie green lecturer of sociology and anthropology has seen huston speak before along with many other pre senters on the subject of hiv/aids she is an amazing speaker one of the best i've seen green said she sends a very positive message huston does not believe that abstinence is the only safe sex hiv/aids is real it's here she said you can become b w photo by mike tornichia river huston back right spoke with audience members after her lecture a positive life on tuesday huston urged students to have confidence in themselves to prevent them from engaging in harmful behaviors seniors encouraged to contribute to class gift by lynn qualey assistant news editor approximately 120 seniors attended the senior class gift kick off dinner wednesday at mountaintop campus where the special guest was president farrington charlstie laytin 99 senior class gift chairperson introduced farrington who made a short speech it is a uniquely american idea to give back to your alma mater farrington said in other countries higher education is funded by the government but this is not true in the u.s farrington went on to say peter rossin who recently gave 25 million to the college of engineering and applied sciences is a per fect example of giving a gift to a university one of the greatest gifts you can give is not only money but sheer commitment farrington said you were invested in by people who were here before you it is impor tant that you invest in the next generation if someone asked me what are the special characteristics of lehigh students i would say this year's class slogan four years of hard work a lifetime of memories describes lehigh students he said solicitation co-chairperson lauren allu 99 said it is lehigh's goal to get 42 percent of the class to contribute but the committee wants to surpass lehigh's expectations and involve 50 percent of the class others speakers at the dinner included kent aitchison 90 and tori penske aitchison 92 who are still involved with regurgitator thrills audience once again by hina parveen news writer stevie starr the renowned regurgitator had lehigh students rolling with laughter at the ulrich student center saturday night dave kapferer 00 of university productions said starr was brought back after last year's performance due to stu dent reaction this is one of the better shows we put on last spring and we're anticipating a big ger crowd kapferer said before the show his anticipation was rewarded since 400 students triple the usual crowd showed up at the ulrich center starr amazed the audience by swallow ing a light bulb and then regurgitating it the act was accompanied with starr hit ting his chest and all the sound effects of the bulb going down then coming back up the crowd's intake of breath was fol lowed by loud applause i was shocked julie lindquist 02 said i can't understand how he did it starr said his ability to swallow objects comes from his muscle control the audience all witnessed the control starr talked about as he mixed dishwashing soap and water in his stomach to wash off a quarter he had swallowed after burping up soap bubbles he took the stunt a step further by swallowing smoke and then bringing up bubbles filled with smoke after swallowing nearly an entire can of see page gift page 5 see starr page 5 see huston page 5 r x 1 .
