the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 43 friday april 24 1998 all the lehigh news first opening ceremonies considered a success by lisa krause news writer a relatively peaceful opening cere monies banner competition kicked off greek week monday at sayre field last year problems had arisen between chapters and physical confrontations ensued this year all participants and greek week staff were anxious to avoid such problems ryan faulkingham 99 president of the intrafraternity council emphasized the amount of preparation that went into orga nizing the opening ceremonies this year we spent a lot of time educat ing the houses faulkingham said a greek week committee of about 30 mem bers reviewed all the banners twice prior to the opening ceremonies greek week co-chairperson ryan scanlon 99 worked with the greek week staff to make the atmosphere of opening ceremonies better than it had been during prior years we did everything we possibly could to make the situation better than previous years scanlon said we pinpointed the aggression scanlon attributes the success of this b&w photo by vicky steel new members of alpha omicron sundaze festival and concert to be held tomorrow at sayre field morphine with delta 72 16 horsepower and god street wine will entertain the crowd the concert is sponsored by university productions and it begins at noon the first 500 peo ple to arrive will receive free t shirts and prizes other carnival-type attractions will also be featured including a skydiving simulator for henry toolan 98 sundaze is the best part of the week sundaze is always the high light of greek week he said it's a great time to listen to some music toss a frisbee around get a tan and just hang out jay bray ton 99 is looking forward to saturday's shows it's the best time i had at lehigh last year and i can't wait until this year's show bray ton said this year morphine will be headlining the show they are a boston-based rock trio that blends elements of jazz and blues with rock n roll to produce a trade mark sound their biggest hits include honey white from their 1995 release yes and early to bed from their 1997 lp like swimming morphine has been featured on the soundtracks of popular movies get shorty and things to do in denver when you're dead the band has been popular on the boston music scene for quite a while and with their new album they have begun to achieve national acclaim the video for early to bed garnered them a grammy nomina tion last year seth malamut 01 lives near boston and has seen the band per form four times he is excited about the opportunity to see them again on campus they're a great live band malamut said they give off lots of energy and the crowd always gets into it the afternoon will begin with a performance by the new york based band god street wine the band is characterized by their unique jam style and are con sidered to be in the same genre as bands such as the grateful dead and phish their most recent album god street wine is the band's fifth lp and contains the hit feather god street wine though not a lacocca institute merger revealed by giselle gutderriez news writer interim president william c hittinger 44 announced friday that lehigh's lacocca institute will join the college of business and economics effective immediately the institute will retain its headquarters in lacocca hall but will also be a part of the asa packer campus and will continue its relationship with the college of arts and sciences as well as the college of engineering and applied science the lacocca institute was founded in 1988 with an endow ment provided by lee lacocca 45 retired chairman of the chrysler corporation the institute sponsors the lacocca scholars program for lehigh undergraduates and the global village summer programs for college students and executives lacocca scholars interact with business leaders while the global village is designed to foster diversity and growth between dif ferent people in addition to these programs the institute supports continuing education programs and outreach activities to south america europe and asia the merger of the institute and the college offers enormous opportunities for synergy hittinger said the decision for the merger was made to offer the potential for see opening page 6 see sundaze
