brown and white vol 100 no 6 lehigh university tuesday september 29 1992 byob success difficult to gauge by erin mclaughlin news writer the first lehigh byob weekend has passed but it would be difficult to obtain a measure of how successful it really was the byob policy created a more con trolled atmosphere as well as protecting the fraternities that participated this weekend however many people wonderif the byob policy will create new problems as it solves old ones many individuals voiced a concern about drinking and driving increased drink ing in dorms and lehigh becoming a suitcase school only five fraternities alpha sigma phi chi psi delta upsilon phi gamma delta and phi kappa theta registered parties for this weekend normally so few parties would mean long lines and large crowds even though only five parties actually occurred they were small with virtually no lines and were under control taken as an isolated situation one would think the new policy was successful but in reality few students were on campus this weekend and even fewer ventured onto the hill long before this past weekend sept 25 and 26 had been marked on many student calendars as a prime weekend for a road trip some went home to celebrate rosh hashana and some went to cornell university for the lehigh-cornell football game other stu dents rented movies caught up on studying or went to off-campus parties having pre determined that the parties on the hill this weekend would be awful pat regan 94 social chairman of chi psi fraternity felt the weekend went better than expected but he does not feel this is an indication of how the byob policy will affect fraternity parties it is a good idea philosophy-wise but people will find a way around it he said many others agree that b yob will lead to more off-campus parties or to drinking be fore coming up to the b yob parties however as a social policy the byob idea has served its purpose andy twiggar 94 secretary of the interfraternity council and a brother at phi gamma delta fraternity said the new social policy is a step in the positive direction and definitely a good route to follow a lot of liability is removed from the houses under the byob policy he said if an underage diinker is found intoxicated the houses are no longer held responsible he hispanic heritage week shows diversity of culture by maclean guthrie news writer exhibitions of poetry posters flags and historical back ground were displayed in the university center to expand the lehigh community's knowledge of hispanic countries during national hispanic heritage week sept 21-25 the office of multicultural affairs sharon brown as sistant dean of student life members of the latino house and the society of hispanic professional engineers combined efforts to make the event a success we are trying to show the community that we the different latino cultures are not all the same said jose cerrano 95 , multicultural programmer and president of the student alliance for latino and south americans we plan to expand ourselves to show the publi c our individual latino cultures on tuesday at pete's arena student dancers performed the salsa the meringue the lambada and other traditional dances a major influence on the outcome of the events was the youth and growth of sals a jane gilbert student accounts coordinator said this year the organization is under a whole new set of leadership with good ambitious ideas i'm very optimistic about what they are going to do this year cerrano said it national hispanic heritage week is a good start we're working very well together students in general have been excited about the club on thursday manuel escamula assistant vice president of academic affairs at metropolitan state college in denver said minorities should get past their accents or color and go for their dreams he said they should get involved in their com munities and show they have alot to offer although escamilla's speech was geared toward hispanics indi viduals of all races could derive something meaningful from it we all have the responsibility to be advocates of education to be a role model he said escamilla founder of many programs designed to promote the importance of higher education for minority students said lehigh is a different experience for most stu dents not just the hispanics it is the kind of place that enriches any one cerrano said while giving the people the opportunity to have a learning experience we are learn ing too about our own different hispanic cultures the week ended with a lun cheon at whitaker laboratory fri day traditional latino dishes were served to approximately 85 atten dants the movie american me was shown at a free dinner and movie social at the latino house friday depends on change by michelle scherer news writer all-greek day was held saturday at rauch business center in order to get the greek community together-students and alumni alike lehigh president peter likins told the audience he was not the bad guy in the fight against greeks he said he supported lehigh's extensive greek system but that in order to keep it afloat it has to change likins said with the cooperation of greeks , administration and alumni the greek system will live forever likins ' speech preceded speeches by mo littlefield executive director of sigma nu fraternity marsha duncan vice president of student affairs and craig peterson of the national interfraternity council after lunch alumni and greek members broke down into several groups to address the issues at hand the topics included fi nancial management risk management so cial programming in the byob environ ment men's fraternity rush convocation rush planning standards and pride house man agement pledging and membership devel opment and alumni relations each group was led by a panel which consisted of advisors from different fraterni ties and sororities representatives from the national interfratemity council and repre sentatives from residential services afterward a rush picnic was held inside the university center inviting freshmen to eat with greeks see byob page 3 i investigating the science of
