a total of 7,281.61 has been appor tioned from the student activities fund to the various school organizations dean congdon disclosed recently this amounts to approximately 2.50 per student the fund will be distributed in the following manner this is the first houseparty event with music provided by top bands to start the houseparty on its dizzy way slide rules and books abandoned as campus is taken over by dates by tim dennis the fall house party week-end of 1947 is underway and from all indications will be one of the best yet the official starting time is 4:00 p.m today but the lehigh queens have been arriving since early this morning after four o'clock the dates disappear for a short time into their respective living quarters long enough to remove their for mals from suitcases to avoid wrinkles and then it's down to kinney's a walk around the campus or a tour of bethlehem to utilize the time until dinner starting at 10 p.m friday nite will be the i.f ball sponsored by the interfraternity council the dance will feature music by two of the finest young dance bands in the country buddy rich and skitch hen derson it will be a formal affair and will be the scene for the latest feminine styles highpoints of the dance will be the presentation of cups to the houseparty queen and mr and mrs lehigh the former will be cho sen by the members of the first string football team and the cup will be presented at midnight the latter was chosen by a committee from the university women's club and along with the cup they will dance to their favorite tune decorations for the dance will follow a stars in the night such boosters as bing crosby frank sinatra dick haymes and arturo rubinstein he formed his dance band at the request of capitol records who signed him to a recording contract about the time his first records were appearing in the music stores of the nation he was signed to a regular featured spot on the bing crosby philco show skitch designed his band to pro vide a soft danceable beat along with good music he feels that the trend in music is slowly veering from the frantic and raucous in dance music to the kind of music folks can keep time to without per spiring badly-formed by-product of the works of the masters it took the music of duke ellington to awak en him to american jazz it was here that the pianist still in his teens changed his mind about style his first professional engage ment in the united states was as an accompanist to cliff ukulele ike edwards soon after this he started playing his remarkable piano stylings for such top-flight bands as glenn gray skinnay en nis tommy dorsey and artie shaw skitch left the dance field for a short time for featured spots on radio shows such as the pepsodent show and dave rose's california melodies he was invited into hol lywood society by an old friend mrs bob hope and after his re turn from the air corps he found himself the rage of hollywood he was invited by frank sinatra to make a guest appareance once a month on his radio show and in between times was kept busy by a flood of invitations to parties by by car plane and train . . . dancing on the upper floor of grace hall at the i.f ball tonight will be to the music of skitch hen derson and his orchestra skitch will feature nancy reed and andy roberts on vocals and also a good share of his ingenious piano styl ings skitch was born in birmingham england where his father was in the diplomatic corps attached to the british embassy when he was still a youth he entered the lords school of music in london deter mined to become a concert pianist when he was 16 skitch headed for this country in america he studied piano composition school ed to consider popular music a his first concert performance was under the auspices of the bir mingham league cancer guild and it was generally agreed by a critical audience that he had a good chance for musical fame young henderson then studied for a while with the celebrated conductor of the london philhar monic orchestra albert coates ditterline elected town council head at a meeting in drown hall on tuesday october 21 the town council held an election of officers to fill the vacancies left by the re signation of the four major officers gene sowers dick stevick don love and george horneck presentation of nominations pe titions signed by 10 town men qualified the following men as can didates norman hughes roy dit terline charles jensen robert courtney and gene high the hare system of proportional rep resentation was applied to elect roy ditterline president charles jensen vice-president robert courtney treasurer and gene high secretary election chair man jack roche presided during the elections allentown group to sponsor party alpha lambda omega the al lentown social fraternity is spon soring a party-dance for its mem bers tomorrow saturday at the woodlawn fire co hall on the outskirts of allentown arrangements for the party were made by bill diehl irv pol litt bob yeager and jack hohl an evening of well rounded en tertainment will be provided the plans call for square dancing un der the direction of a professional caller with music by the celebrated fink family of emmaus modern dancing novelty prizes and an abundance of refreshments calendar for this weekend temple ist debate opponent nov 11 lehigh university opens its in tercollegiate debating season against temple university tues day nov 11 2 p.m in the new radio studio of christmas-saucon hall the subject of the debate will be resolved that a world fed eral government should be estab lished the lehigh team will be com posed of two members of delta omicron theta the university honorary debating society these two men are robert e mertz 48 president of the society and rob ert polstein 48 the debate will be conducted in an orthodox style and will include a rebuttal a junior varsity debate will precede the varsity intercollegiate contest it will start at 7 p.m and the question will be resolved that a system of compulsary mili tary training is necessary to insure the security of the united states participants are howse and wil liam e tripp 49 supporting the affirmative and earle h conner 48 and richard f wood 47 de fending the negative lehigrh dates arrive for the fall houseparty members of the flying club could certainly bring their dates by air while less fortunate individuals must resort to more conventional means of trans portation but whether you fly walk or swim to this houseparty the effort should be worth while buddy rich his colorful entertainment in tying together the two halves of the football game after the game plans will once again be left up to the individuals they can attend the tea dance at the maennerchor hit k mulhausen a civil engin eering instructor chester czephya 50 and paul maleson 49 he spoke before representatives of 13 pennsylvania and new york schools and warned the other chapters against losing sight of their primary purpose as a service organization lehigh s alpha psi chapter now boasting 55 active members and pledges compares favorably in size and activity with chapters in other eastern universities its members worked with freshmen during orientation week and re cently operated the coke conces sion without payment at the com bined charities dance at grace hall providing the music for the i.f ball tonight from 10 to 2 will be one of the finest young dance bands in the country today — bud dy rich and his new orchestra the rich band has been in exist ence only a short time but has been a smash hit in top dance spots in the country among which are the college inn of chicago and the aquarium restaurant in new york buddy himself has had a long and successful career in the show world he started his rise to fame at the age of two when he was a featured part of his parents vaude ville act wilson and rich bud dy's first association with the drums came in these vaudeville theaters when he would climb on the pit drummer's lap and beg for the drumsticks a few years later when buddy was five he was featured in the greenwich village follies of 1923 at seven he toured austra lia and honolulu and all points east upon his return to this coun try he continued his tour when he was at the keith theatre in washington president wilson was so impressed with the rhymthic young man that he had an audi ence with him backstage buddy was in his late teens when he decided to play with a band a series of jam sessions at the crystal cafe in his home town brooklyn was the first step toward this ambition it was here that joe marsala first heard him and gave him a job after he left marsala's band he joined leith stevens the band that was famous at the time for its saturday night swing club sessions over cbs after this job buddy joined the famous bunny berrigan ensemble artie shaw heard buddy and was amazed at his ability he ask ed buddy to join the shaw band buddy stayed with shaw about a year and while with him he added greatly to his list of fans about this time tommy dorsey was chaning the style of his or chestra from a sweet outfit to a swing band he needed a drummer who could provide the punch that was necessary to put across the fine arrangements of sy oliver he hired buddy for the job and before their six year association was up buddy had risen to the leature position in the band buddy's stay with dorsey was interrupted by a two year stint in the marine corps but upon his re turn to dorsey he started to for mulate plans tor a band of his own with the help of frank sinatra his plans finally became a reality buddy's band is one of the few bands in the country that was an immediate success and when still undergoing formative changes was a smash hit wherever it played buddy's reputation promises good danceable music tonight at the i.f ball senior interviews begin during the week representatives from the hartford electric light company
