letters to p.w botha president of south africa at the first meeting of lehigh's recently restarted chapter of amnesty international on tuesday amnesty international is a worldwide organ ization which works specifically for the release of people being held in prison because of their beliefs the group helps individuals provided they have not used or promoted violence by writing letters to government officials on their behalf dan anders 90 head of amnesty at lehigh and co-chairman of the progressive student alliance said he was pleased with the number of students who attended the first meeting the letters written to botha at tuesday's meeting were an appeal on behalf of prisoner eric molobi molobi was detained without charge between dec 7 1987 and dec 2 1988 and released on an extremely severe restric tion order hindering his freedom of expres sion movement and association in the letters members of amnesty recomm ended molobi be released from the restriction order which violates his freedom accordi ng to an amnesty international newsletter the order was imposed on molobi solely because of his work on behalf of human rights anders said amnesty international was start ed at lehigh in 1984 by an english department graduate student the group which had been inactive since 1986 was reformed this semest er by anders human rights has always been a concern of mine so i decided to start the group he said kara kudzma 90 shannon flam 91 steve ragland 92 and sandee pyne 92 are helping to co-chair the organization they all got involved with amnesty based upon their feel ings that apartheid is the basic concern for human rights and dignity in south africa future activities the group is planning include a booth at the upcoming concert featuring ladysmith black mambazo a south african musical group proceeds from the concert will go to the lehigh university south african scholarship fund amnesty also plans to sell t-shirts in order to raise money anders said our basic concern right now is to continue writing release letters and to expand our group within the lehigh commun ity anyone interested in joining the group should contact anders the next meeting for amnesty international will be tuesday at 4 p.m in magnifies hall room 488 the reporters film on campus by kristin upani cameramen enter pi lam talk to administrators brown and whtte senior writer reporters and cameramen from fox network's the report ers visited lehigh on jan 20 to talk with administrators and students about campus security for a segment on national college campus safety to be aired either feb 18 or feb 25 administrators were alarmed however when students said they saw reporters in residence halls and in fraternities because the administration did not give permission for them to enter private living areas they tried to do all the thi ngs we told them they couldn't do said associate dean of students mark erickson bill johnson director of media relations arranged for the reporters to first meet with vice president of student affairs marsha duncan on friday morning to ask questions and get permission to film various areas of the campus according to duncan the reporters asked to film the clery memorial and lower centennials residence complex she said they also asked for the names of friends of jeanne clery a freshman murdered at lehigh in 1986 duncan gave them permission to view the memorial and to go into the lounge but not into private living areas or halls and we would not give them the names of her friends we wanted to keep them out of private living areas she said erickson said clearly they should not have been there however the men from the reporters understood otherwise we were given free rein by officials to film the campus steve dunlop a representative from the report ers said jamie edgar the producer from kunhardt productions a group hired by the reporters to film the campus said they said we could shoot what we wanted dunlop said the reporters visited the university of california kids are extremely paranoid n0w...l think students are worried to be caught in a fraternity even if we shoot things which are not identifiabie " jamie edgar kunhardt productions at los angeles princeton university university of southern california columbia university and cornell university as part of a story on campus security based on act 73 a bill passed in pennsylvania which requires colleges to disclose information on security and crime statistics to perspective students and the public the legislation initiated by clery's parents may be brought to the federal level dunlop sad we came to lehigh because of the clery case dunlop said that case was a landmark before visiting lehigh the reporters went to the clery home in bryn mawr pa we are not focusing on lehigh edgar said the clery's represent a bigger picture now when the crew from the reporters arrived on lehigh's campus duncan arranged to escort them to the memorial and also to
