the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 05 friday september 18 1998 all the lehigh news first cuban art depicts depression of country by kelly height news editor a black and white photograph of an empty cuban food market hangs in dußois gallery of maginnes hall as a part of an exhibit on display until nov 12 the exhibit entitled mendoza's cuba - words and images was created by tony mendoza a cuban refugee and prominent artist i don't trust photographs by themselves they tell a story but what story mendoza asked in an inter view with ricardo viera professor of art photographs by themselves can mean almost anything depending on the viewer the interview with tony mendoza accompanies the four photographs viera who knew mendoza before he was a well-known pho tographer said that mendoza's work is extremely powerful his photographs look at a specific culture close to him viera said mendoza left cuba when he was young but returned to experience how cubans were doing both socially and economically i shot 80 rolls of black and white film and wrote a 90 page diary and i noticed that cubans are fairing terribly under castro's post-soviet socialism mendoza said the only happy people i saw there were the children who seemed unaffected by it all mendoza's pictures also reflect what he saw there i'm interested in being honest and in a kind of docu b&w photo by danielle frikker a student admires the four photographs by tony mendoza the cuban photographer whose work will be on display in the dußois gallery of maginnes hall until nov 12 iacocca conference focuses on business geneia esterly news writer the lacocca leadership series presented its fifth semi-annual event wednesday a business conference that focused on issues prevalent in creative business cultures at the wood dining room in lacocca hall rachel lonaberger senior vice presi dent of the lonaberger basket company and president of the lonaberger foundation was the keynote speaker at wednesday's conference which presented issues of concern for small mid-sized and family businesses the conference consisted of two sessions the first session included panel discus sions a luncheon colloquy and tours of small businesses the second session consisted of a dinner discussion entitled women in business featuring lonaberger and the women executive panel the purpose of the conference was to offer participants an opportunity to discuss their perspectives and innovative ideas con cerning small business operation roger nagel executive director of the lacocca institute presented a speech competing with a type two culture businesses should provide value not only to their customers but to employers suppliers and owners nagel said panelists for the conference included ross born co-president of just born inc lisa jane peretz president and ceo of binge drinking study reveals college habits by jenn rauch managing editor binge drinking continues to plague col leges and universities nation-wide according to a follow-up study released by the robert wood johnson foundation on sept 10 the study which was conducted in 1997 was a follow-up to a 1993 study on alcohol abuse that was based on 1 1 6 nationally rep resentative universities and colleges the survey found that one-third more drinkers drank to get drunk in 1997 com pared to 1993 it shows the issue of alcohol use is more serious than people think john smeaton vice president of student affairs said the number of people who drink to get drunk is high according to the questionnaire adminis tered binge drinking was defined for men as drinking five or more drinks in a row in the previous two weeks and four or more drinks in a row for women frequent binge drink ing is defined as binge drinking three or more times in the previous two weeks in the 1993 study being white involved in athletics or a resident of a fraternity or sorority made it more likely that a student would be a binge drinker there is no question there is a high correlation between fraternities and soror ities and binge drinking smeaton said on campus the social life revolves too much around alcohol fraternities and sororities are one place but they are also not the only one see lacocca page 5 see binge page 7 see art page 5 smelling bananas or green apples can help you lose weight source strange but true website http bhmedia com career services helps prepare students for the real world see page 9 lifestyle 9-16 culture corner 10 astral signs 11 crossword 1 4 star academy received a 2,500 grant from bell see page 6 news 1-8 fundraiser 3 senate 6 internships 8 kt~3 i the women's volleyball wm i i team lost to st peter's % 1 hl i 3 1 tuesday %^^^^ i see page 23 ft^^s i sports 20 " 24 w li £ 1 1 volleyball 23 / pßl i g ° f 24 e tm3 i women's tennis 24
