the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 03 friday september 11 1998 all the lehigh news first audio visuals brighten up presentations by jessica williamson news writer a lecture about the advantages of including audiovisuals in presentations was given by elia schoomer of instructional technology support service at linderman library tuesday schoomer is the team leader of instructional support services at lehigh she demonstrated the use of slides overhead projectors and computer graphics as visual aids for a presentation the main purpose of this lecture is to show people how several presentation techniques work look and feel schoomer said and to make people familiar with different approaches to presentations as well as basic presentational design tips she showed how the use of visual aids allow speakers to look more organized and professional good design increases the attention comprehension retention and persuasion of your audience she said schoomer also said the main goal of any presentation is to make the audience believe that you're worth listening to and using visual aids drastically helps schoomer suggested that using color in visual presenta tions can be helpful using slides that contain color have a greater impact than black and white and it looks more professional schoomer said she warned that there is risk involved since using too much color may add distractions schoomer also stressed that slides should be kept simple and used as support material but not as text you don't want your audience constantly reading from b&w photo by jimmy bromfield rotc has moved from warren square to w packer ave for a change of scenery program makes time count by donna bor ak news writer the center for writing math and study skills sponsored a seminar in drown hall tuesday to show students how to manage time efficiently study skills consultant vicki jessamine graduate student in education began the seminar by handing out fixed time schedules and semester deadline calenders college is a new learning environment that presents many academic challenges jessamine said effective study skills in time management note-taking and test taking empower students because they learn how to minimize distractions and how to get the most out of lectures and assigned reading the seminar showed the fixed time schedule and deadline calender create structure and discipline for students lacking a definite schedule in their lives it replaces the role that high school parents and coaches created amaya gorostiaga 02 realized that she didn't have enough time in the day after she utilized the fixed time sheet and deadline chart in high school i didn't have to really do anything and now i'm overworked in my classes which makes it diffi cult to find the time to do all the things i need to do gorostiaga said this program empowers students and reinstates determi nation that is disappearing jessamine said students sometimes feel too intimidated by the professor's teaching and testing styles lehigh invades costa rican rainforests by heather ignall news writer a team of undergraduates and faculty will be traveling to costa rica this winter to study ways to prevent the depletion of the rain forest by implementing sustainable development policies don morris assistant professor of earth and environmental science and richard weisman assistant dean of civil and environmental engineering will lead the course with a group of 16 students morris has lived and conducted research in the moist tropical forests of venezuela for two years and currently has an active research program set up in argentina weisman is an expert in water research development and has worked in ecuador anne thomas director of the office of international education approached a group of faculty members to start an international integrated learning experiences program which is where the idea for the course and trip came from we're actually looking to see how to develop a sustainable resource within the rain forest morris said the trip should be a great learning experience he said in fact there are already lots of students on a waiting list to go away on the trip the cost of the trip is 3,000 this includes tuition for a three credit social science course named sustainable development the costa rican experience the course will take several approach es to understanding the ecological eco nomic and political ramifications of tropi cal deforestation according to morris students must attend five classes this semester to prepare for what they are going to be studying and learning on the excursion there's going to be reading and think ing about lots of issues before we go weisman said while in costa rica the group will hear a
