editor in chief following 20-year term at university of pennsylvania new president looks to lu future gregory c farrington formerly the well-recognized dean of the school of engineering and applied science at the university of pennsylvania was announced as lehigh's 12th president on may 21 concluding a search that began last fall ron ulrich chairman of the board of trustees made the announcement to a small group of lehigh faculty staff and students gathered in front of the alumni memorial building we set out 10 months ago to find a proven leader an individual who could guide lehigh into the 21st century and we have found that individual in greg farrington ulrich said he is a won derful match for lehigh an active researcher a teacher a proven adminis trator with a commitment to excellence and a drive to succeed and he is a won derful person and human being the selection of farrington by the search committee was endorsed unani mously by the executive committee of the board of trustees which is responsible for selecting the president farrington began his tenure as president aug 15 succeed ing william c hittinger who served as interim president after peter likins departure oct 1 1997 to the university of arizona according to farrington he chose to come to lehigh for two reasons the timing was right for him to leave perm and lehigh seemed like an appropriate next step in some of denied lehigh a liquor license to serve beer and wine lehigh administrators were notified wednesday that their request had been denied construction of the pub has been on hold pending a response from the state cap ital in harrisburg i was surprised student senate president emily wurgaft said " we were told it getting the liquor license wasn't definite so we weren't assuming we would have it lehigh officials have stressed that the intent of the pub was to create an additional social outlet not just a place to drink our intent in this project was to create a healthier safer outlet for our students john smeaton vice president for student affairs said it would have been part of our overall effort to combat alcohol abuse and its second-hand effects on students alcohol would have been available thursday friday and saturday nights for a total of 15 hours a week in addition to the regular stage door menu a system using wristbands would have been used to identi fy those were are 21 and a separate window would be used to purchase alcohol the focus would not have been on alco hol but on entertainment and food our model is similar to the kind of environment you'd see in applebee's or pizza hut smeaton said lehigh has been at the forefront of col leges and universities working to combat binge drinking around the country the uni versity began its bout against binge drinking after receiving a five year grant from the robert wood johnson foundation in 1996 nationally schools are beginning to take the responsibility as bartender 1997 survey by the institute of public policy at george mason university in fairfax va of more than 240 colleges found that students are allowed to buy alcohol by the drink on 40 percent of the campuses at four-year schools many of these schools claim that their motivation to serve alcohol on campus stems from the desire to create a place that's safer than going off-campus or to a fraternity party the center purpose of the pub was not drinking but we haven't given much thought to what happens next wurgaft said in terms of promoting it as a social place we want to continue promoting that smeaton said although we are not able to serve alcohol on the limited basis we intend ed plans for increasing entertainment and additional social opportunities are definitely things i'd like to pursue pub committee members and school
