dr ainey speaks at college lecture vol xxviii no 41 society hears talk at banquet on estimation in ship con struction price five cents yearlings lose last game of the season to fast prep school team score 40-9 student body hears distinguished alumnus speak on govern mental topic excellent address need of restricting assumption of authority by national congress spoken of the lehigh frosh basketball team went down to defeat last saturday at the hands of perkiomen the yearlings journeyed to perkiomen via automobile and ar rived there in the late afternoon the game was a slow one from start to finish although slow there was much rough house playing on both sides as a matter of fact the first sixteen points earned by the perkiomen quintet were made on fouls the referee was very strict and held the boys down as best he could lehigh frosh had a tough proposition on their hands and were beaten by the score of 40-9 a few days before perkiomen defeated perm frosh by the score of 38-7 this was the only game that the perm frosh lost this year out of twenty-two games played the perkiomen aggregation lost only two games during the whole season this was the last game of the season for both perkiomen and the lehigh frosh the following men made the trip and played in the game : gentshart huggins forwards ; gilmore cen ter ; bortz and ruttenberg guards ; substitution minuter for hu^gms manager mcllwaine also went on the trip the lehigh frosh although hav ing a good team have seemed to have had all the breaks against them this perhaps was due tc some of the men not practicing daily especially was this the case in the perkiomen game as several of the men had little practice before the game and were in pretty bad physical condition gym notes the special gym class in boxing will bring its work to a close this friday the sport has been a popu lar one and all the men taking the work enjoyed it and believed they were benefitted next year the course will be changed to personal defence and it is expected that this course will prove to be even more popular than was boxing all forms of boxing jiujutsu and wrestling as well as methods of defense agaisnt clubs and knives will be taught such a course is new and practical and undoubtedly will draw a great deal of interest the apparatus class which meets on monday and thursday after noons at 4:45 will continue until the end of the season during the year the men have been taught the correct way to use the apparatus j and as a class are becoming quite proficient the work embraces vaulting jumping work on the par allel bars rope climbing as well as i some advanced work on the flying rings the men are enthusiastic over the instruction they are re jceiving and the class has earned a ! place in the gym curriculum glee club notice there will be a rehearsal of the '■gluee club on wednesday at 7 ! p p m in drown hah all mem 1 bers are urged to attend so that a good rehearsal may be had this is very important as the club must j prepare at once for the future con 1 j certs lehigh cniversity was host to one of her distinguished alumni last friday morning when the hon v d b ainey 87 ll d 16 spoke on the preservation of our minority rights at the college lec ture given in packer memorial church dr ainey who is chair man of the public service commis sion of pennsylvania received tht honorary degree of ll d from his alma mater at the fiftieth anniver sary of its founding he was one of nve prominent alumni so honored at that time dr ainey's address was a critical analysis of some of the broader principles of our american govern ment he spoke of the need of changing our ideas and mode of government in order to solve suc cessfully the modern problems which confront us in so doing however the speaker pointed out that we must not forget the primal and tundamental declarations laid down by our forefathers in the es tablishment of the nation the speaker defined governmental authority as the summation of int didual rights surrendered to it ' and said that as a nation we were show ing the dangerous tendency to sur render too many rights to the gov ernment as a result we are rapidly becoming the most governed people of the world rather than the least governed if we excuse all legislation by calling it the will of the majority we neglect the fact that our constitu tions were adopted not only to as sure majority rule but to impose limitations on the majority in the interest and for the protection of the so-called minority the preser vation of our minority rights was nothing more than the preservation of our rights as individuals and as such was one of the most precious of the possessions guaranteed to us under the organic law of our nation dr ainey said in part 14 ihave a sense of proprietor ship with you in this splendid insti tution under whose auspices we are permitted to assemble its history covering over half a century has been so unique its ca reer so glorious its achievements sc notable and its fame so extensive that i am inclined to pause a few moments to contemplate with you what it was and is and shall be 1 am reminded that it has lived its useful life between two great war periods the one wherein the very foundations of our national exist ence was shaken and the other wherein the fabric of civilization it self was involved we find that our beloved univer sity in the stressful periods of out nation has fully met its responsibil ity and from its student body here equipped there have gone forth from time to time men of large vision and patriotic impulses who have contributed of their best and some of them their all toward the solution of our great problems mak ing for the perpetuity of our coun try continued on page four following the address there was a general discussion and the meet ing adjourned one of the great difficulties in esimating during the war was the fluctuation of the market and labor conditions when things have be come more settled more time can be given to developing the efficiency of these companies and it was up tc the navay engineers of today to develop it this is just one of the many ways of making shipbuilding a more efficient process and mr shulze ex plained how the surface has only been scratched mr shulze told of how the actual esitmating was done based on the specifications submitted to the com pany or on the cost of previous ships the old system was to take every thing separately and figure it out a very slow and tedious process and great possibilities of mistakes now this data obtained from for mer ships has all been compiled and tabulated in the form of curves so that if the weight of a cylinder of a ship of a certain type is wanted all that is necessary is to refer to the curves mr shulze is head of the esti mating department of the bethle hem shipbuilding corporation ?. specialist in that line so he was very well qualified to talk about it some good tips for college men just starting out were given by mr r l taylor 04 and then the meeting adjourned to the parlor where mr h h shulze speaker of the evening addressed the society professor mcki'bben former pro fessor of civil engineering was the man who inaugurated this course intending it to be one different from those in other colleges and second tc none when he left lehigh he asked professor fogg to carry it on professor fogg then stated how he looked for the best naval engineer in the country and was very fortu nate in securing professor chap man the results showing he was not mistaken professor fogg was asked to ad dress the meeting and after a few funny stories proceeded to give a brief history of the naval course professor chapman then spoke stating that as a whole he was very well satisfied with the naval engi neer's work and it was gratifying to see the way the members of the society supported it dr emery spoke first and as the day happened to be st patrick's day he amused his audience with several irish jokes he then spoke on the founding of the naval engi neering course and expressed his pleasure at the wonderful results obtained saying that if there had been some misgivings several years ago he was more than satisfied now president h m woelful 22 presided and after dinner asked the guests to address the society the naval engineering society held its first formal meeting in the form of a banquet last thursday evening at the sun inn the attend ance was very good only about two men being absent while several members of the faculty and mr r l taylor of the class of 04 helped to make the affair an inter esting one successful dance given by band first appearance of band at social function proves hit many present the band staged its dance on saturday night and as far as the musical program is concerned was a success ricapito however was slightly disappointed in the numbers there for it seems the student body is not willing to give its whole sup 1 port on which the life and quality j of the band depends enough peo ple were there to make the dance interesting and they enjoyed them selves very much it was pleasing to see that several members of the faculty take interest and satisfaction with lehigh's band ' mrs howard r reiter and mrs john w lang were the chaperones and it was very largely due to their ! efforts that everybody had a pleas ant evening other all who were for their support in the near future the band i going to give several free concerts ! for the student body some new n i ic wi be practiced and when the baseball season starts they will be on hand annual y conference at silver bay the 36th annual conference of eastern college students will be held between the dates of june 24 and july 3 1921 at silver bay lake george n y last year le high was well represented at this conference and all those who attend ed were well repaid by the enjoy able time they had while there as many lehigh men as can possibly attend the silver bay conference this coming summer are urged tc do so the silver bay conference offers an opportunity for help on personal moral religious and life-work prob lems ; it will afford especial training for christian association leaders il will afford an opportunity to receive great messages from men of wide experience and it will promote in tercollegiate fellowship the conference sessions will be held in the mornings and evenings and the afternoons will be given over entirely to intercollegiate ath letics and other forms of recreation the athletic facilities at silver bay are numerous including tickets from a great number of for eigners penn state again takes wrestling championship lehigh ties with pennsylvania for fifth place with a score of five points bouts keenly fought meet held at princeton capt bertolet wins second place loeser and schwartzbach take third place lehigh awarded inter collegia tes for 1922 perm state again emerged vic torious in the intercollegiate wrest ling meet which was staged a1 j princeton on march 18 and 19 hav ing scored 24 points altogether cornell was second with 13 fol ! | lowed in order by princeton with 11 | ! vale 10 lehigh 5 pennsylvania 5 j i and columbia 4 lehigh's points were chalked up iby capt bertolet loeser and | schwarzbach bertolet registered two points by getting second place j in the 145-pound class while loeser | also obtained to mackey schwartzbach was auto matically awarded third ulace morrison of princeton proved to be lehigh's dark horse when in the semi-finals he succeeded in get ting a decision over capt liertolet bertolet's inability to cope with morrison was very likely due to his 1 recent illness however he had nc 1 trouble in disposing of benjamin vale amd thus secured second place ■in the 145-pound class benjamin ' secured third place in this class loeser lehigh's other scorer fell into a bad hold when he met mc bride cornell in the semi-finals it was expected that loeser would de feat mcßride as he did so in the [ | cornell meet but mcßride finally 1 spilled him with a crotch amd ankle hold maurer state defeated loo ser and secured second place but j loeser easily copped third by johnson columbia thu 1 securing two points l in the 115-pound preliminaries j schwartzbach defeated gift perm by a decision having an advantage 1 ' of 3.37 in the semi-finals he e 5 cured a decision over p rook prince . ton with 5.18 advantage watson c state defeated schwartzbach in the - finals by a decision and schwartz bach lost to capt mackey cornell r by a fall in the second place bouts myers lehigh's 125-pounder lest by a decision to davis perm whe iua b.oo minute advantage in the preliminaries since davis how ever was defeated by garber state in the semi-finals and later by rob erts morrison defeated benjamin by de cision with a 5.5 minute advantage in the second place bouts thus giv ing uertolet second place in this class loeser lehigh's 158-pounder won by decision over steams princeton having a 2.05 advantage in the preliminaries in the semi finals mcßride gornell threw loe ser with a crotch and ankle hold in 7.58 minutes mcßride secured first place by defeating capt ashby
