see business page 6 according to trexler the aacsb said the business school needs to have a more systematic method of assessing the business program's outcomes the college currently assess es graduates current students and employers trexler said a new assessment model will be imple mented for distance-learning courses m the mba program and incoming students to complete the aacsb also noted a lack of diversity m both the faculty and the student body trexler said the college cannot address this issue rapidly james schmotter dean of the college of business and economics will be leaving lehigh next year to become the program's rating from a two to a three on a four-point scale with a one rating implying the program meets all aacsb standards the college has retained its full-accreditation status but has effectively been placed on a three-year probation until the year 2000 the accounting pro gram is separately accredited by the aacsb and received a rating of three as well kathleen trexler assistant dean and director of the mba program said the aacsb found five areas of improvement for the business school assessment pro cedures diversity integration among disciplines relative slow ness m reform of curriculum and teaching evaluations these should not have been surprises for anyone here the college of business and economics was recently placed under continuing review status by the american assembly of collegiate schools of business the aacsb a nonprofit organization made up of repre sentatives from colleges univer sities government and corporate organizations evaluates the qual ity of national business programs and assigns accreditation status during the week of feb 24 the aacsb's reaccreditation team conducted a study of the graduate and undergraduate busi ness programs at lehigh after this visit which ended a two-year evaluation process the aacsb decided to lower the business summit aims to raise funds for children see summit page 6 at the same time as the clean-up thousands of protesters were gathered to say charity and volun teerism don't make up for the damage caused by the new welfare legislation according to the new york times likins attended the summit each day he said he was inspired by the beginning of an effort to help young people and values his privilege of partici pating m the event i have never seen a more dramatic demonstra b w photo by am my lefevre andi czerny 97 nader soliman 97 and kate cannon 97 attended the senior send-off party tuesday to say goodbye to lehigh and reminisce about their experiences over the past four years the brown and white vol 104 no 45 friday may 2 1997 lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 business program on probation all the lehigh news first by lisa a jones assistant news editor lehigh president peter likins was one of thou sands of national leaders gathered m philadelphia sunday through tuesday at the presidents summit for america's future m an effort to mobilize cor porate donations and volunteers to help two mil lion children across the nation by the year 2000 the three-day gathering filled with speeches and symposiums was led by general colin powell president clinton and two former presi dents george bush and jimmy carter the campaign's goal is to provide children with mentors safe places to go to after school health care and job skills it is supposed to help compen sate for a retreating federal government according to the new york times president clinton and other leaders pitched m cleaning up a philadelphia neighborhood sunday painting over graffiti and picking up litter by toby bonagura news writer trcxler said we received this rating not because we were not meeting standards but because we've not been able to measure and verify the fact that we're doing it president peter likins said because it is possible to extend an accreditation for up to i 0 years the faculty and administration feel disappointed by this out come he also said there is no reason to be concerned about future accreditation of the busi ness college there are specific actions that must be taken by faculty and administration over the next year or two m order to comply with the expectations the aacsb have set and we will simply take the steps required for compli ance likins said jjews wr sambkws the baseball team lost to princeton 1 7-5 tuesday see page 20 sports 15,18-20 men's tennis 15 mark duncan 18 golf 19 track and field 20 the brown and white has announced the new editorial staff for next fall see page 4 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 washington d.c 3 class officers 5 e-mail password security has become a major issue on college campuses see page 7 lifestyle 7-14 culture corner 8 horoscope/review 9 crossword puzzle 12 not just a face 1 3 mme vassilyev of russia gave birth to a total of 69 children between 1725-65 source the 1997 guinness book of world records
