the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 25 tuesday january 30 1996 all the lehigh news first trustees approve tuition increase by toby bonagura news writer tuition will be increasing next year by the smallest percentage in 26 years and by the smallest dollar amount in a decade accord £ ing to lehigh president peter likins the undergraduate tuition will increase by 850 or 4.3 percent to 20,500 this is 100 less than the current year's increase graduate student tuition will increase as well the school of education's tuition has increased to 450 per credit hour the master's of business administration and master's of technology programs to 570 per credit hour and the engineering and applied sciences programs to 770 per credit hour the board of trustees approved the ™ tuition rate on jan 12 after the university council made their recommendations in mid december some students view the tuition increase as a necessary evil i might as well just go to the bursar and yell here take my money " joseph klocek 98 said i wouldn't mind thc tuition increase so much if they told us exactly where 6 this university's main source of income is tuition and as the cost of doing big business rises so must tuition in order to meet expenses gary lutz member of university council ffe < the money was being applied these increases are necessary to help meet additional costs for personnel as well as sup plies physical plant operations and mainte nance costs likins said if we simply allowed our expenses to grow naturally and increased tuition to meet those costs we would be obliged to increase tuition by much more than 850 likins said gary lutz psychology professor and a member of the university council said the original proposal was for a 950 increase the council looked at die model and it was president likins who initially said to bring this figure down lutz said the family's ability to cover the cost of educa tion is becoming increasingly more chal lenging and while it is true we are operat ing under tight times we can't burden the families with covering all the increases in operating costs t in order to lessen the burden costs we re trimmed wherever possible likins said james tiefenbrunn assistant vice president for the budget said a combined total of roof collapses on hockey practice by shane marquess news writer the domed roof of the lehigh valley ice arena came crumbling down on wednesday jan 17 as the varsity hockey team was preparing for their 11:15 p.m practice around 11:00 p.m the lehigh hockey team arrived at the rink to get dressed for prac tice five minutes later as an adult league finished up the last minutes of their game the team heard a loud noise coming from the arena the team rushed outside to see what was going on most of them just thought there was a fight in progress as the players stepped out on the ice the roof began to fold down toward the rink both teams on the ice fled from the center of the rink bob fyrer 96 ran out to the rink to rescue some of the flee ing players on the rink i referee and play with a lot of those guys i was thinking of them fryer said on his way out of the ice rink fyrer was struck on the shoulder by a piece of debris falling from the ceiling all together it only took about two minutes for the whole dome to fall down he said by 11:10 p.m the majority of the budman assistant news editor seniors are asked to continue contributing to the class of 96 gift campaign to reach the 55 percent participation goal by the spring thirty-one percent of the seniors have contributed to the campaign keep the train moving ... help carry the load which began oct 25 if the participation goal is reached lehigh president peter likins plans to ride on the tracs van one afternoon in may students can call for a ride and likins and the driver will take tlie students to their destination likins challenge will hope fully serve as motivation for the students to give it may give stu dents the opportunity to meet and talk to likins on a more informal basis said stacy stainbrook 93 assistant director of the alumni fund it's important to give something back so others can have the same great experiences we had the program works so that students don't have to give all at once and can spread it out over a period of time a five-year pledge that amounts to 100 is requested the first year students give 10 and the amount increases by 5 each of the next four years there is also a young executive plan to which students donate 200 over five years and the sayre club plan which 250 is donated over five years even if students can only afford a tiny contribution at first it's now the seniors turn to sub sidize the next generation of lehigh students likins said all of us need to understand the great american premise that generous citizens will voluntarily contribute funds to keep alive and well our finest institutions even if your family paid full tuition for four years your edu cation was subsidized by the gen erosity of others who came before you people whose gifts have built our campus our endowment and our reputation likins said in tlie past the senior
