an insider's guide to lehigh-lafayette friday november 19 1993 • the brown and white the 129 th meeting i ben the 129th meeting of lehigh vs lafayette is played tomorrow at a sold-out murray h goodman stadium there will be a new twist added to this unique rivalry for the first time in the history of the most-played college football rivalry the game will be played for the patriot league championship the engineers have a 3-1 record in the league while the leopards are 3-0-1 a win over lafayette would guarantee lehigh at least a tie of the championship a lafayette victory would give them their second straight title the other piece in the championship puzzle is the bison of bucknell university who are also 3-1 the bison will face colgate university tomorrow and if they and lehigh win they will tie for the title bucknell can do no better then a tie we have been talking a lot all year long lehigh coach hank small said and it is now time to stop talking right now it is not going the way we want it to but there is one more chance to get it done lehigh is in the midst of a two-game losing streak which has loosened their grasp on the league title and has put a dent in its collective spirit a 32-27 loss to bucknell two weeks ago and a 77-14 shellacking at the hands of the university of idaho has taken the steam out of the team picked to win the patriot league by christopher mautz sports editor i am very concerned about our spirit small said we are trying to get things going and i am concerned about that yesterday's practice tuesday was not a beat lafayette win a championship type of practice and we are trying to get that started senior receiver and elected offensive captain dave cecchlni also voiced concerns surrounding last week's punishment i think a lot of people coming off the big loss maybe doubting themselves cecchlni said and you can't be doing that you have got to take what happened the last two weeks and get it out of our system the leopards were defeated by the u.s military academy last weekend 35-12 and would have to be considered the favorite coming in lehigh-lafayette is a game with many facets and one of those is the election of the team captains by the players the defensive captain for the engineers is senior line backer lance haynes for haynes being elected captain was something he did not begin to think about until last season when i was a freshman and sophomore i really i didn't think about it since i was primarily playing special teams haynes said last year is when i began to think about it and i was hoping that i would get it when it happened i was real happy and i please see rivalry page b7 tsemptimphelter pageß3 head-to-head match-ups pages 84-b5
