engineering soc iety has secured wm s murray as a speaker for its meeting to be held in drown hall on thursday even ing march 10 the subject of the talk will be the superpower sys tem and it is one in which every engineer should be vitally interested the project which aims to supply the whole eastern part of the united states with electrical power at prob ably 250,000 volts will in a few years be a reality and will mean the revolution of industry in the count ry mr murray is the originator and present head of the superpower project and is therefore especially fitted to lecture on the question the talk should be further interes ting to all lehigh students in view of the fact that mr murray is an electrical engineering graduate oi the class of 95 and is unquestion ably one of the foremost engineers in america among his achieve ments can be mentioned the electri fication of the new york new haven and hartford railroad that the superpower system well merits its name can be seen from the following brief descrip tion of what it will do in the re port recently submitted to ex-pres ident wilson by secretary of the interior payne the coal saving for the united states was estimated at 25,000,000 tons annually this saving would be divided among all the industries in the country there are for instance 20 class i railroad lines in the district involved with a total trackage of 36000 miles about one - third of these roads would be electrified so as to handle 60 per cent of the traffic this alone would mean a saving of 6 000,000 tons of coal and 10,000,000 continued on page four senior class proposes novel memorial the cancellation of the lehigh freshmen - paknerton high school game saturday left the first year five without opponents so a sopbo nore aggregation was hastily formed to test the mettle of the yearlings playing before the start and again between the halves of the varsity game the spectators gathered in the basket ball court were treated with forty minutes of the rougher style of play that stood in marked con trast to the lehigh nassau game during the first half neither team was able to get working together and it was anybody's ball most of the time with both frosh and soph equally unable to locate the basket and many chances for scores being lost substitutions in the last 20 minutes of play seemed to better the scoring combinations and the team work of the freshmen enabled them to roll up a final score of 22-10 against their rivals the lafayette freshmen team af ter their defeat last wednesday night have requested a return game on a neutral floor which will prob ably be played off as soon as suit able arrangements can be affected manager macelwain 24 is nego tiating for a game with reading high school for friday night to be played in reading played and the second round is half over some very surprising changes have been made in the standing of the fraternities and the bowlers with high scores the leaders in both of these lists have been changed and the former title holders have been dropped farther down the list by newcomers the high score in fraternity team score bowling goes to phi delta theta who bowled the high mark of 679 on friday afternoon against the delta phi team second and third honors go to sigma chi who ran up the scores of 654 and 636 on friday in the conflict with sigma phi epsilon the next in line is psi u who held the lead before at 630 all of the individual leaders have been overcome in these last three matches carlisle of sigma chi created a great sensation when he scattered the pins for 213 against sigma phi epsilon second place is held by loeser of s p e who counted 203 in the same match straub of the phi delts who held the lead for a short time now ranks third with 201 boynton dropped to fourth place with his 197 and stanier sigma nu and capt fay d u are tied for fifth place with 192 by the end of the week the sec ond round should have been com pleted which will leave only six fraternities still in ithe race the third round matches should be close and bowled with high marks if the preliminary round indicates iany-j thing chi psi again on top the chi psi bowling team again came out on top in their match against the sigma nu bowlers the first match was one of the closest battles that has been had this year the winners only getting a decision by four pins the second game saturday night in taylor gym lehigh won only two decisions and a draw while brown secured two falls and two decisions the visitors were aided materially by horse shoes four-leaf clovers rabbit feet and the like both childs in the 115 pound class and meyers in the 125 pound class just missed certain falls for lehigh because of the lack of a few more seconds it was pure luck that gave the vistors a fall instead of a decision in the 135 pound class loeser and good in the 158 and 175 pound classes were by far better men than their opponents but for some reason oi other they could not work their favorite hold four times loeser ali.nost had his man in a head but tock and each time he lost it the same thing happened to good who last year won the intercollegiates with the head buttock brown lost to cornell univer sity the night before 18-6 but they did not seem to be suffering any ill effects in fact they seemed to have gained by the experience for they studious ly avoided most of the holds which lehigh wrestlers are known to spec ialize in remembering the fact that le high wrestled at cornell only a short time ago it seemed likely that brown acquired some valuable advance dope before coming here the meet started off in the 115 pound bout in which childs was matched with staples of brown the two light-weights spent the whole 9 minute period on their feet and two extra 3 - minute periods were allowed to decide the winner childs won the toss and went to the mat but was up in a flash almost as soon as the referee had said go he stayed on his feet for the rest of the three minutes and in the sec ond period held his man for full time toward the end he secured a bar nelson and almost had stap les on the mat when time was called in the 125 pound bout meyers and smith of brown also wasted the mine minute period without go ing to the mat in the extra period smith succeeded in staying on top for the entire three minutes al though several times meyers almost got up in they overcame a seven point lead jumped into the front and after that were never headed the crowd which filled the tay lor gymnasium was taken by sur prise by the poor showing of the lehigh five at the start and the lead that the orange and black repre sentatives got in the beginning berg a guard came up through the lehigh defense and scored in the first minute of play and then he and anderson followed with two-point ers again after that the lehigh forwards tightened up on their guards and scoring eased for a few minutes a double foul was called on lehigh and king counted the second try that gave the prince 1 ton five the lead by a 7-0 score several more minutes elapsed with out any scoring lingle had a try at a foul but missed then came another chance for lingle to shoot a foul this time he was success ful and it seemed that this point spurred the lehigh quintet on for they started in with more spirit than they had shown before lingle got loose from his guard and scored a basket donovan took a shot from behind the foul mark and registered two more points lees then added his share to the score by breaking through the nassau team by a clever dribble and dropping the ball through the net just before the whistle sounded a foul was called on prince ton and lingle converted it into a point bringing the score to 8-7 in lehigh's favor continued on page three soon after the ball was thrown up at center to start the second half bill springsteen cut under the basket for a nice two-pointer king took a stab from the center of the floor and counted a clear shot lees then continued on page three when a class graduates from le high it is customary for them tc give a memorial as a token of theii esteem for their alma mater and to perpetuate the memory of that class this year the class of 1921 wishes to give a memorial that will be of material advantage to lehigh and especially to the athletics at le high it has been proposed that each member of the class pledge himself to give a certain amount of money each year for four years the total of the money given each year will found an athletic scholar there will be a short meeting of the senior class in packer hal after the lecture friday morning at which nominations for tablel orators will be made all mem bers of the class of 21 are urged to l . be present a meeting of the lehigh-mary land club will be held tomorrow evening in drown hall at 7.15 one of the important matters of business will be a discussion of the celebra tion of maryland day on march 25 all man-landers are expectec to be present the first college dance of this term was held saturday at 8.30 mrs h r reiter being patroness the dance was well attended and one thing noticed was the absence of so many stags there were probably fifty couples present and about thirty stags the fact that so few stags were present probab ly helped the good feeling along it is certain the ones present en joyed it very muchl the music was furnished by the university five an orchestra com posed of college men and fast gain ing popularity in the neighboring cities they have had quite a few outside engagements one being at the university of pennsylvania they are earning a name they de serve several members of the faculty were present with their wives who acted as chaperones those pres ent were mrs h r reiter mr and mrs natt emery mr and mrs j h beaver mr and mrs c l thornfourg and mrs h eckfeldt mr lorado taft noted sulptor and lecturer of chicago spoke un der the auspices of the thursday evening club ait the south side high school on thursday night mr taft whose subject was the cathedrals of france has a very attractive personality and a pleas ing delivery of speech which holds the attention of his audience he opened his address by speaking of the five leading cathedrals which are at amiens bourges chartres paris and rheims and then referred to the era of church building from 1180-1223 a d or the time of the reign of philip augustus during which period the greatest of the cathedrals were erected he hu morously referred to statues used in the old french cathedrals and kept the audience in laughter with out showing any lack of apprecia tion of the skill and zeal which ac tuated these sculptors professo taft's lecture was very much en joyed by his audience and many of them expressed the desire to hear him again in the near future the thursday evening club has made quite a reputation for itself in the good speakers which it presents and one is certain to hear a good address attending their meetings the moose continued on page three when a class graduates from le high it is customary for them tc give a memorial as a token of theii esteem for their alma mater and to perpetuate the memory of that class this year the class of 1921 wishes to give a memorial that will be of material advantage to lehigh and especially to the athletics at le high it has been proposed that each member of the class pledge himself to give a certain amount of money each year for four years the total of the money given each year will found an athletic scholar there will be a short meeting of the senior class in packer hal after the lecture friday morning at which nominations for tablel orators will be made all mem bers of the class of 21 are urged to l . be present a meeting of the lehigh-mary land club will be held tomorrow evening in drown hall at 7.15 one of the important matters of business will be a discussion of the celebra tion of maryland day on march 25 all man-landers are expectec to be present the first college dance of this term was held saturday at 8.30 mrs h r reiter being patroness the dance was well attended and one thing noticed was the absence of so many stags there were probably fifty couples present and about thirty stags the fact that so few stags were present probab ly helped the good feeling along it is certain the ones present en joyed it very muchl the music was furnished by the university five an orchestra com posed of college men and fast gain ing popularity in the neighboring cities they have had quite a few outside engagements one being at the university of pennsylvania they are earning a name they de serve several members of the faculty were present with their wives who acted as chaperones those pres ent were mrs h r reiter mr and mrs natt emery mr and mrs j h beaver mr and mrs c l thornfourg and mrs h eckfeldt mr lorado taft noted sulptor and lecturer of chicago spoke un der the auspices of the thursday evening club ait the south side high school on thursday night mr taft whose subject was the cathedrals of france has a very attractive personality and a pleas ing delivery of speech which holds the attention of his audience he opened his address by speaking of the five leading cathedrals which are at amiens bourges chartres paris and rheims and then referred to the era of church building from 1180-1223 a d or the time of the reign of philip augustus during which period the greatest of the cathedrals were erected he hu morously referred to statues used in the old french cathedrals and kept the audience in laughter with out showing any lack of apprecia tion of the skill and zeal which ac tuated these sculptors professo taft's lecture was very much en joyed by his audience and many of them expressed the desire to hear him again in the near future the thursday evening club has made quite a reputation for itself in the good speakers which it presents and one is certain to hear a good address attending their meetings the moose home extends to the fraternity bowling and pool teams an invitation to use its bowling al leys and pool tables for the matches to be played during the present tournaments brown and white bethlehem pa
