americans must inform the united states government that they support the chinese movement for democracy wu'er kaixi a chinese student lead er told a capacity crowd in packer laboratory auditorium last night kaixi explained that lehigh stu dents and all americans can aid the chinese movement for democratic reforms by pressuring the u.s govern ment to refuse to acknowledge the leaders of the communist government in china haifa world from home 21-year-old kaixi is one of the leaders of the chinese students movement as a freshman at beijing normal univers ity kaixi helped to organize the stu dent demonstrations and hunger strikes in tiananmen square in may these student protests culminated in the bloody confrontation on june 4 between students and the peoples army of china kaixi said he lost many of his friends in the square that day the democracy that we had in mind simply became a dream in front of the tanks said kaixi he described how the people of beijing supported the movement by feeding the student demonstrators kaixi said families gave food to the demonstrators at the cost of their own hunger one man who came to the square with food told kaixi some chinese people may not understand democra cy however we understand that you are speaking for us kaixi said the demonstration and student hunger strikers accomplished two important tasks first he said the movement brought about the realiza see china page 4 see administration page 2 serve the lehigh community representatives of different schools and corporations as well as seven people from the lehigh board of trustees were members of this com mittee we are attempting to change the whole culture of lehigh this is both a fundamental and philosophical exer cise if it was just a matter of rearrang ing the budget we would go and do it lehigh president peter likins said lehigh reduces budget eliminates 26 positions bytoddspinello brown and white news writer lehigh university will reduce its budget by 1 million and will reallo cate nearly another million for the 1990-91 academic year eliminating 26 administrative positions in the pro cess the budget cuts are the result of a special examination of lehigh man agement resources by an appointed visiting committee in march of this year the committee concluded that a decrease in spending would best b&w photo by jason stanford renee rizzo 90 gets tossed in the air by the lu cheerleading squad vol 97 no 23 the brown and white friday december 8 1989 physical therapy services to be eliminated lehigh university see therapy page 8 by the students and very helpful in the 1988-89 academic year out of the 8,068 visits made to the offices of physical therapy 6,895 of those visits were made by students 816 were faculty and 356 were made by staff members hughes estimates they occasionally see from 75-80 visits a day she said i don't know exactly what the administration has in mind it sounds like there may be some kind of substitute but it will be on a need basis and it would be on a pay basis my impression is it won't be free added hughes the cost of physical therapy ser tion of physical therapy is appropriate because the number of students who need rehabilitative physical therapy is far fewer than the number of stu dents who are interested in fitness according to physical therapy records however this statement is grossly inaccurate of the 8,068 visits made to the offices of physical ther apy 1,464 were for the fitness facilit ies which is only 18 percent of the total number of visits this means 82 per cent or 6,604 of the visits were made for physical therapy physical therapy services which began at lehigh more than 41 years lehigh intends to focus on fitness ago might be provided in an arrange ment with an outside physical therapy group in the form of sports medicine hughes said hughes predicts that a free referral service will be set up on campus it would direct injured students to a place off-campus where they could receive treatment at cost to the stu dent hughes has requested information about the future of physical therapy but she said they are not sure they have not made any definite plans at this point she said the service was well used by mitchell drake brown and white news writer lehigh has decided to discontinue physical therapy services next fall as a result of budget cuts made by lehigh president peter likins as far as i know physical therapy as we know it will not be in existence after june 30 1990 said adrienne hughes director of physical therapy i just handed in my letter ofresigna tion which will be effective jan 5 1990 she added the weight equipment is going down to the gym and will become part of the fitness center that they will be offering stated hughes assistant vice president of student affairs john smeaton said the elimina demonstration leader speaks on democracy by robyn suriano brown and white news editor and beverly meindl brown and white news writer
