whtte news writer for americans the first ammendment offers protec tion for the freedom of speech unfortunately the freedom of expression is not extended to the more than 100 chinese citizens studying at lehigh the chinese students are afraid to speak out publicly against their government because they fear retribution against themselves and their families when they return to china the chinese students who were willing to talk about the situation in china for this article asked that their names not be published even though four months have elapsed since the june 4 massacre in china's capital the world has not forgotten the brutality with which the chinese army supported by a tank column assaulted and captured tiananmen square the attack killed several hundred student protestors and injured thousands of stu dents the students protested in defiance of martial law and government corruption and demanded greater democra cy the symbol of the protest was a statue the students had erected in the middle of the square called the goddess of freedom modeled after the statue of liberty the statue was destroyed when the soldiers seized tiananmen square and has been replaced by a statue depicting a worker soldier peasant and intellectual work ing side-by-side while there are no physical reminders of the student pro test its memory lives on in the hearts and minds of the chin ese people my family in china is very scared said one graduate student when i talked to them on the phone a few the brown and white tuesday october 3 1989 lehigh university deans leave case to bethlehem vol 97 no.b looking over the shoulder of the bethlehem police and said lehigh does not have the authority to do that smeaton said lehigh is investigat ing the facts in the case through the dean of students office so the univers ity is aware of the situation however he stressed that lehigh has no formal role in the investigation of an incident between a student and the bethlehem police our role in this is to follow up on an incident involving a student as we would in any incident with a lehigh student smeaton said we're trying to play the normal role that we would byrobynsuriano brown and white news editor and caroline west brown and white editor in chief the dean of students office is not conducting a formal investigation into the arrest of a brown and white editor thursday who was charged with disor derly conduct at the scene of a car accident involving a police cruiser nick chini 90 was forcibly remov ed from the scene of the accident by bethlehem police officer craig stef ko chini was assisting a brown and white photographer scan mcgowan 92 who was taking pictures at the scene according to witnesses stefko told mcgowan to stop taking pictures or he would break the camera chini repor tedly told stefko that he was from the brown and white and had the right to take pictures see police page 6 student body organizes to attend town council meeting tonight play in any of these situations he added smeaton said his office is mainly concerned for chini s health and acad emic needs and has been in contact with the family the media had been under the impression that the university was taking a more formal role i assumed the university would investigate on the behalf of the student to make sure the student's rights had not been violated by the city police brown and white advisor walter trim ble said but obviously that's not the case chini said he is feeling in better health now after being taken to st luke's hospital sunday morning at 4 a.m early sunday morning chini exper ienced convulsions blurred vision witnesses reported that chini was pushed to the ground by stefko then dragged about 10 feet before being handcuffed two additional beth lehem police officers on the scene helped stefko and brought chini up from the ground in a choke hold witnesses said chini was treated at lehigh's health center si luke's hospital and lehigh valley hospital center over the week end for a concussion and neck injur ies scrapes and bruises assistant vice president of student affairs john smeaton said stories in the globe times and the morning call made it appear
