the brown and white bethlehem pennsylvania 215 758-4181 friday february 24 1989 lehigh university vol.loo n0.32 lehigh searches for new dean of students staffing and making arrangements to fill the dean's position he said according to director of auxiliary services barbara kreppel a member of the search committee they will review the resumes according to their individual schedules and make their initial recommendations to director of admissions samuel missimer the head of the committee by the middle of march we will be helping the dean select a number of candidates to bring to campus to interview kreppel said the committee kreppel said hopes to begin interviewing in late march and april and to have made a decision by may or june also on the selection committee are smeaton assistant dean of students terrence curran assistant professor of theatre pam pepper professor of mechanical engineering and mechan ics charles smith associate professor of accounting dunham bainbridge student senate president debbie tsai 89 former interfraternity coun cil president jeff eichman 90 and lehigh has initiated a nation-wide search to replace dean of students john smeaton who will become the assistant vice president of student affairs the 10-member search committee which consists of administrators faculty and students and was establish ed to evaluate the more than 100 applications received so far met for the first time yesterday according to smeaton most of the resumes have come from higher education institutions and associa tions smeaton who was hired as dean of students in 1984 has been acting as both dean of students and assistant vice president of student affairs since march 1987 when the new dean is installed july 1 smeaton will fulfill the position of assistant vice president of student affairs his dual position according to smeaton was intended to be tempor ary we have just now completed the by caroune west bf own and white managing editor student t marc jones 90 tsai who was also on the committee to select the dean of the college of arts and sciences james gunton last year said students are always involved in decisions of this sort we will have an equal voice tsai said the committee is looking for some one with experience at a college or university preferably in a dean of students office we're looking for someone who can pull areas such as residential life greek affairs and student activities into focus krep pel said and provide the best direc tion and guidance for lehigh we need someone who has the capacity to understand private higher education smeaton said but i certa inly wouldn't limit us to someone who had been in only private institutions the key factors i look at to be protruding is a match between a per son and his or her strengths and talents and the institution with the kind of students at lehigh the types of programs available and see smeaton page 2 b4w photo by jim kolbehg dean of students john smeaton malcolm x's daughter speaks on structure by jennifer sajda brown and whtto news wrttec attallah shabazz daughter of malcoli individual's need for structured support in his life lecture monday night the lecture was part of ui its marking black history month when everyday disturbances leave people boggled can fall back on this structure shabazz said it will be support which leads in a positive direction explaining this basic source of support can \ knowing and liking yourself shabazz's message to blacks for the future is to leai know and like themselves to gain the confidence and ah to stand up for their beliefs stressing the importance of a support system sha spoke of the increasing use of drugs she prefaced by sa unfortunately this is not a country that holds onto tradi instead we are one that lags into trend more young adults are abusing drugs because of t trendiness implying that factors outside of them controlling their lives shabazz said shabazz said if the drug users had a support system would think twice and possibly alter their course of ac one of the most important things for young people to k today is that a set structure exists as the backbone of life said shabazz's recognition that blacks have always 1 see shabazz page 2 b&w photo by tony cacxxo lchigh chief of police eugene dax one and a-half year-old grandson christopher sports androlewicz leads women hoopsters page 19 wrestling skidding as eiwas approach page 20 arts&leisure evenson spreading gospel of geology page 12 lu to present miller's a view from the bridge page 12 what's inside students assess social policy progress page 3 lu and bethlehem police face off on court for charity page 4
