columnist jack anderson one of america's best-known and widely read investigative reporters and the first to report the iran-contra affair spoke wednesday night m packard laboratory auditorium anderson expressed broad views on the 1988 presidential race the economic crisis the united states faces and american soviet relations anderson first addressed the pro gress of the presidential campaign and said rev pat robertson and rev jesse jackson will have the most delegates because they have the most dedicated following in most states turnout is small and those who vote are more likely to be loyal supporters of either robertson or jackson i've been saying all along that the candidates going into the conventions with the most delegates will be pat robertson for the republicans and jesse jackson for the democrats he said anderson briefly commented on the other candidates bush is an introvert seeking the number one extrovert job he said dole has a good chance of overtaking bush dole is tough sharp and smart according to anderson gephardt is running m the primary as a pragmat ist but if he gets the nomination he will most likely become more mod erate he gephardt has that pre sidential look hart has the name recognition but few ideas anderson said most importantly he stressed ameri cans should use their democratic rights and become more informed on political issues so as to vote more intelligently if we do not exercise our democratic rights we will lose them he said anderson then focused on the econ omic crisis the united states is facing he said the economic advantage jap an now has over the united states is because japan has mobilized educat ed their best people to gather informa tion from the world's top industries and produced a superior product japan lab auditorium anderson offered his views on a wide range of subjects including american-soviet relations and the 1988 presidential race delta sig may recolonize in fall pending approval by steve morenberg brown and white news writer with the last class of delta sigma phi fraternity brothers graduating m june plans are being formulated for the recolonization of the house delta sig was dissolved at the end of the spring 1985 semester after being found guilty of hazing charges during lehigh-lafayette weekend m november 1987 alumni of the lehigh chapter met with national representa tives m an effort to put a proposal together to submit to the administration according to mike boyd assistant dean of students a proposal from the alumni president is expected to arrive anytime now if it's approved he said the fraternity could recruit members this fall in the fall of 89 they could move into their house the former delta sig house on packer avenue has been a co-ed residence hall named packer house for the past three years although there have been other fraternity dissolutions at lehigh-sigma phi and delta tau delta m recent years-the delta sig story is unique for one thing its demise is largely attributable to a ruling made by its peers the interfraternity judiciary committee ijc a five member student board rejected various proposals by delta sig focusing on positive punishment community work for instance-deciding instead that dissolution was the only solution the ijc had never made such a ruling and the subsequent appeal by delta sig was the first time that situation had ever been encountered before as well they broke new ground boyd said assistant vice-president and dean of students john smeaton who made the final decision on the future of delta sig said i feel very good about the outcome as well as the process the ijc did a very responsible thing needless to say delta sig was less pleased with the outcome not that it came as a surprise really delta sig had been m trouble before the fraternity was on probation for a couch-burning incident and for a poster violation one of its pubnite posters invited partygoers to get faced senate elections planned by celeste primiani brown and white news writer a new student government will be elected march 2 to give representatives more respon sibility with issues that are strictly student oriented and do not concern faculty this is an excellent opportunity for stu dents to get involved m an active way m the extracurricular activities that directly affect them assistant dean of students jennifer volchko said the student senate's main purpose is to take over the responsibility of recognizing clubs and allocating funds for them although previ ously volchko's responsibilty because the clubs directly affect students forum decided the student government should have a say as to where funds go and m what proportions under the new government forum must first deem the issue as strictly student-orient ed and then delegate it to the student senate for consideration consequently forum will be handling most ly university issues such as the calendar and parking problems where concerns are shared by both faculty and students as a result next year forum will be reduced from the 60 representatives it consists of now 30 students 30 faculty members to a proposed six mem bers forum's new structure will be finalized by the restructuring committee before the end of the semester in the meantime elections for the newly formed student senate will choose 36 representatives with nine seats reserved for incoming freshmen who will be elected m the fall but forum co-chairperson katie zilligen 88 stressed the election is not only for student senate representatives but forum representa tives as well hopefully this better election process will make students realize that this isn't just a popularity contest students need to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved because they can make a difference zilligen said during the phasing m of the new student government and the re-designing of forum the top 30 vote-getters m the election will play a dual-role m the student government by representing the student senate as well as forum to help the voters make their decisions new application and election procedures are being implemented in the past candidates were required to have a petition signed by 40 of their constituents such as the interfraternity coun cil residence halls council or the pan hellenic council in addition the candidates were required to write a statement pertaining to their candidacy for the march election candidates will still be required to complete a petition but must also present a 75-word or less platform stating their qualifications and objectives candid ates will have their photos taken and displayed on election day along with their platforms m grace lounge current forum representa tives hope this recognition factor will help voters choose a candidate likewise to increase student awareness much advertising has been planned for the election there will be table tents placed m dining halls banners hung outside the uni versity center and flyers distributed around campus there are also plans to chalk the chalkboards m as many classrooms as possi ble to remind students of meetings applica tion deadlines and voting hours a two-page
