devincens elected freshman president by mark rothenberg brown and white f*6ws writer doug devincens was elected freshman class president wednesday as 367 freshmen voted for their class officers election offices said it was a very good turnout devincens said rm honored and excited to be elected as president of the teshman class i'm also looking forward to getting things underway to make the class of 1991 the most effective and prosperous ever thirteen freshmen ran for the four positions of president vice president secretary and tresurer stacy levfne was elected vice president she indicated in her platform that her high school involvement in student affairs as key club chair woman qualified her for the position new secretary lisa wagner took a different approach in her statement mentioning that she would like to see mailboxes put in rathbone hall so students don't have to walk to the uc to get their mall mary d'agostino the treasurer for her high school chapter of the national honor society and her high school yearbook during her senior year was elected treasurer of the freshman class she said she was very happy with the results and pointed out that she actually went around to all the freshmen during her campaign she safcl meeting her class helped in the race because she safcl no other candidates took that approach the brown and white talk aims at new social policy statements will allow lehigh to discipline people who are out of control predicted interfraternity council ifc president scan kelly 88 referring to regulations in lehigh's social policy proposed since lehigh's board of trustees passed a social policy resolution oct 9 the resolution which aims to eliminate problems with the social policy says we instruct the president through the vice president for student affairs in consultation with the forum and appropriate student organizations and within the context of the social policy to review the existing standards and rules pertaining to the use of alcohol and to make necessary revisions these revisions should be in effect no later than the beginning of the 1988-89 academic year events that may be curtailed as a result of the resolution include weekday pubnights hotel or golf parties grain alcohol punch sunrise cocktails rush events involving alcohol and latenight sigs nobody's thrilled about the proposed policy statements kelly said but changes are inevitable due to pressure from nationals and legal liability considerations he said he was not surprised by the trustee resolution but he was pleased by the stance taken by the board we were hoping that they'd leave it to the students and administration instead of just writing out the rules he said assistant dean of students michael boyd agreed saying they could have gone further than they did in terms of specific directions they left us with a fair amount of flexibility kelly said a tougher alcohol policy was to be expected even though he thought problems with alcohol have decreas ed in the past few years even when i was a freshman things could still get pretty scary on the hill....things have gotten see ifc page 7 by marisa feltham brown and athletics to a group of 25 to 30 people tuesday night in uc iioom 308 the talk was sponsored by the dean of stu dents office as part of alcohol awareness week after tonight i want you to be able to understand the difference between subst ance use misuse and depen dency and how to help some one who has problems sid dons said the five stages on the alcohol continuum are no use experimentation respon sible use dependency and death with no use and death at the extremes experimentation is when we first learn how the subst ance affects our thinking feel ing and behavior us in total ity siddons said the example he used was the age of most people when they had their first drink vs their age when they first got their own drink while most people in the audience were between 11 and 15 years old when they had their first drink they were older than 16 years old when they first got their own drink siddons said the age phenomenon was nor mal since we live in a society that has drinking as part of its fabric it's natural after experimentation people go one of two ways if they had a bad experience they go back to no use or if they had a good experience they advance along the con tinuum to video stabler arena opened its doors wednesday at 5:30 p.m to an anxious crowd waiting to see and participate in the video taping of whitney houston's gong so emotional according to stabler's director of events richard fritz houston rehearsed at stabler for 17 days this b*w photo by fish " a model pretends to be a fan trying to get to whitney houston summer for her tour which began in tampa florida after an hour and a half of standing in line the crowd had to wait about another half hour before houston made her first appearance at 6:10 p.m the crowd was patient and time passed as a model from the john casablanca modeling school occupied the audience for about 10 minutes with some impromptu jokes when houston entered from back stage the excited crowd cheered vigorously and waved signs bearing the slogans we love you whitney and easton pa loves you a sense of awe filled the room and the crowd became somewhat subdued as the film crew gave the first instructions and the idea of participating in a video to be aired on national television became a reality after the first cut the people on the floor were brought closer to the stage and in the excitement a young boy was hurt by the crowd houston was informed of this incident and she consoled the boy on stage before preceding with the next segment of the film at first the anxious crowd was reluctant to cooperate when the film crew asked them to move back from the stage the crew tried to convince the crowd to move because it would look better but when the lights dimmed and the music began they instinctively pushed forward during the intervals between each cut the crowd stirred and a film crew member encouraged pati ence by saying filming is boring it is a very slow process
