each year m part to pay for increased faculty compensation university president dem mg lewis said tuesday lewis made the statement m a state of the university address at forum ix s first meeting of the academic year inequities m the university salary structure must be corrected over a period of two or three years lewis said faculty compensation when compared to other institutions like the university is too low m certain areas and will require :: a substantial amount of money to correct he continued inflation also is a factor m tuition in creases he noted some of the money needed by the university will come from a revised investment goal for endowment lewis said but some of this money must come from tuition increases in other business the forum received a report from its evaluation committee preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs reported on the residence system and hugh flesher university chaplain reported for the forum's trustee representatives the development of the budget for 1979 80 will be difficult lewis said because the administration already knows that it will not have enough money to meet all of the university's needs it is much easier to raise money for a new building than for regular operating expenses lewis noted lewis also spoke briefly about the new affirmative action-equal opportunity program the objective of the new program is to decentralize responsibility lor equal opportunity and to involve as many people as possible m the process lewis explained lewis also reported that the university will be evaluated by the middle states activities to begin an in vestigation of grades for courses given outside the classroom last year the subcommittee adopted a forum report which made specific recom mendations for grading courses given outside the classroom the subcommittee did not study the problem further currently only a few activities are credited in addition a new subcommittee was formed to examine the issue of grade disclosure a third subcommittee was directed to consider placing size limits on classes the forum report concerned four groups which are credited brown and white the epitome music performance and marching band it recommended that edpol approve the brown and white procedure of student editors recom mending grades for student writers or advise more faculty supervision as an alternative reporting might be placed on the pass-fail system the report said the report recommended that editors of the epitome receive credit music per formance classes should be graded on med school program under fire by peg pfenninger university officials are currently awaiting an official communication from administrators at hahnemann medical school that will determine the future of the joint program the communication will indicate whether the hahnemann officials intend to allow the university to continue its par ticipation m the six-year program or ex tend the program to seven years ac cording to nancy fulford university health professions coordinator the medical program students attend the university for two years including summers and then apply to the philadelphia-based teaching hospital at the end of their sophomore year i'm not sure we would be very unhappy if the hospital decided to drop us from their program fulford said it hasn't exactly been a happy marriage between the two institutions a hahnemann student and two-year graduate from the university believes the university should just cut the program themselves the student asked not to be identified fearing some adverse effect on his own academic success at the school when we were at lehigh the university people were honest about what they thought we should expect from hahnemann they told us about hahnemann s current criteria the student said but they the hospital selection committee changed their minds all the time hahnemann candidates don't know what to expect any more and it isn't fair fulford also said the selection com mittee has been inconsistent on several occasions the last straw was when the selection committee changed its standards last spring without telling us she added the medical school's selection com mittee rejected four of seven strongly recommended candidates from the university hahnemann officials later told the university they were placing more emphasis on cognitive features of a student primarily medical college ad missions tests mcat scores in past years the selection committees from both institutions sought candidates who were both academically sound and extracurricularly well-rounded fulford said they aren't looking for people to be doctors the hahnemann student said they are stressing grades and mcats and aren't going to get the personalities that make a person a good physician the medical school's last-minute change m admissions criteria prompted the university to launch an extensive evaluation study of the program which has been offered at the university for five years the university also decided not to recruit an incoming class for the program until the hahnemann faculty decides the future of the program fulford added that the hahnemann faculty has been displeased with the six transportation service to increase bus efficiency by steve ci vitello a new transportation service was form ed m late august to increase the ef ficiency of the university's bus and van service according to chris christian manager of the service the service is responsible for running and maintaining the university's vans and buses in previous years the personnel office was responsible for the vans which were used for geological field trips and shuttling athletic teams the buses were the responsibility of the residence operations office and were used to transport students to and from smags this arrangement was practical when there were only two vans and one bus but with the addition of four vans and two buses it was no longer workable christian said use of the vehicles has increased m the past few years he continued requiring the formation of a separate department to maintain the vehicles and hire drivers according to christian the new arrangement has increased the efficiency of the transportation service without in creasing operational costs to the university the service employs two full-time bus drivers m addition to part-time work study and contract drivers the vans are being prepared for use by various departments of the university on a rental basis christian said matters such as billing and insurance are still being worked out but the rental service should be m operation sometime m october he added according to christian although an expansion of the service has not been planned part of his job will be to deter mine whether such an
