braved the cold ice dogs and competition to run the 1980 turkey trot wednesday with 776 finishing the 2.6 mile rare absence of black faculty explained by kenneth seai.i.s ed nole this is the first of a three-part series on the lack of black faculty members and administrators at the university there arc no black faculty members on the university's staff of more than 400 although the administration con tends that a good-faith effort has been made to hire blacks university vice president and provost arthur humph rey admits lehigh would like to do more than it has done clearly we have not succeeded the university is not alone muhlen berg college has no blacks on a faculty of 114 cedar crest college has one black part-time dance instructor on its stall of 117 moravian has no blacks among 86 faculty lafayette has a black physical education instructor on its faculty of 177 according to sharon friedman asso ciate professor of journalism and chair man of the equal opportunity advisory committee eoac , an advisory body to the provost thercare three problems the university faces when trying to hire black faculty first she said there is a shortage of qualified blacks in some fields and second because of this shortage blacks arc asking and receiving higher salaries we cannot compete for them she said thirdly friedman argued that the remoteness of the lehigh valley dis suades many blacks from coming to the university for this reason she said the social environment and area are not conducive to blacks friedman pointed out that the univer sity like other colleges and universities has a compelling reason for trying to recruit blacks federal funding of research programs is dependent on the existence of minority groups despite the absence of blacks from the faculty friedman said the university has not yet lost funding because it has made a good-faith effort to follow its affirmative action plans we all feel very strongly that the recruitment of black faculty and women is critical said laura olson vice chair man of the eoac and assistant professor nl government according to olson one of the eoac's major objectives is to monitor the uni versity's affirmative action plans which will be released later this year part of this plan includes the recruit ing of black faculty our committee will look at this plan set by the university and make recommendations olson said it is difficult for the eoac to assess the extent of recruiting efforts because recruitment is done at the departmental level she noted however that the new provost seems committed to attracting minority faculty moreover she said as far as i can tell lehigh has a pretty large interest in attracting minority faculty but the environment is just not conducive to it " vicki sanders admissions counselor and allen cuff area coordinator of resi dence halls are two of the three black administrators at the university the third is roger watkins assistant dean of students neither sanders nor cuff said they have found life in the lehigh valley particularly difficult sanders who deals with undergradu ate recruitment said for a hlack per son starting out it the valley is a good start i think the positive aspects out weigh the negative i do not really have any problems with the area it is far enough from major cities thai you can enjoy suburban life yet it is close enough to a major city that you can go to it she added she noted that sev eral black professional people have recently moved into the area and thata black women's club has been organized in allentown cyclone fence built at fisher to protect field by steve samuklson a four-foot high chain-link fence has been erected around the playing area of lafayette college's fisher field to give kaston police campus security forces and student ushers tighter control of the crowd at saturday's lehigh-lafayette football game according to ronald wyn koop superviser of traffic and security for lafayette college the fence was specifically put up to keep fans from interfering with the garni and to prevent the crowd from tearing down the goalposts before the end of the game wynkoop added the fence's five gates will all be opened at the end of the game to allow students to gel to the goal posts said lafayette dean of students herman kissiah wynkoop acknowledged that a four foot inr.ii fenee is not a complete deter rent to over zealous or intoxicated people but said he hoped the fence which has posts set in concrete would provide security forces a greater degree of crowd control we have a game that's a lot worse wynkoop said citing the thanksgiving day rivalry between easton and phil lipsburg high schools at fisher field and adding that the fence was constructed in part for that game the primary purpose of all security measures wynkoop said is to prevent anyone at all from getting injured ." expansion of transit system requested by subcommittee by val votto the resolutions calling for increased bus service between main campus and both smags and the saucon valley athletic complex were presented by the transportation services subcommittee at tuesday's meeting of forum xl the resolution concerning the smags bus service requested that service between smags and the main campus be maintained on a scheduled basis suffi cient to meet the needs of all the smags residents this called for increased scr vice for the 7:30 a.m 8 30 a.m and 9 30 a m buses the need for the added bus service stemmed from the fact that approxi mately seven to 10 students are denied bus service each morning due to overcrowding mary kay haas 81 president of the panhellenic council noted that there is a definite problem and some girls are missing classes there are job inter views now and i would hate to see girls miss finals she added june kuvin 82 said there is also a need for increased bus service at 4 p.m and 10 p.m one student pointed out that the smags bus did not run at 10 p.m on the evening of monday
