lacrosse notice notice seniors the wrestling team left this morning at 8:15 for state college where they will meet perm state to morrow afternoon at 2 30 in what promises to be for lehigh the hard est meet of the season the cen tre college team is composed al most entirely of veterans of long experience at the game and they are undoubtedly the most formidable of the teams on the schedule this year included in the blue and white squad are two intercollegi ate champions mauer and detar mauer is the lightweight represent ative while detar captain of the team and probably the cleverest man on the squad weighs in at 135 pounds when one considers that lehigh will be represented in both these classes by men who have had no experience in collegiate wrest ling previous to this year the up state grappling team assumes rather monstrous proportions neverthe less what coach sheridan's men lack in experience they make up to a great extent in pluck and fight and the bouts at penm state this saturday will probably be by no means one-sided lehigh will be represented by the following iven : 115-pound class — reynolds or schwarzbach 125-pound class — yanikeuren or miller 135-pound class — walters or thompson 145-pound class — capt bertolet 158-pound class — loeser 175-pound class — roy heavyweight — carlisle the amherst swimming team which arrives in bethlehem tonight has back of it the distinction of having defeated harvard and massachusetts tech the visitors have a particularly strong squad this year they defeated harvard a fe wweeks ago by some 20 odd ! points and last week won out over the strong massachusetts tech ag j gregation by one point amherst has several feature dash-men and j some good divers and the team ex pects to carry off another victory tomorrow afternoon the home team on the other hand reinforced by the confidence gained in last week's affair at stev ens is determined to show the visi i tors some unexpected opposition [ the meet hence will be exceedingly worth while attending as an excit ing contest will probably take place the lehigh tankmen have been put through strenuous work-outs dur ing the past week by coach ma honey and are im good shape for to morrow's encounter brown and white enthusiasts will no doubt le pend upon men like capt jacobs \ annort and gangewere for good work in the sprints and upon arner and regad in the plunges straub and v annort will take care of the diving on feb sth the lehigh grapplers tackled the columbia miatmen at new york and won out with a final score of 16 to 15 coach peterson's men pulled the surprise on the lo cal maitmen when they put up such c formidable exhibition the meet being in the balance until the last bout in he heavy-weight class when carlisle defeated the colum bia man me laugh lin by gaining a decision over the latter this bout while not the most spectacular of the afternoon attracted keen inter est and carlisle met his man with a cool head having an advantage of four minutes 46 seconds at the end of nine minutes the best matwork was shown in the contest between capt bertolet of lehigh and capt pauli of co lumbia both men were experienc ed and knew the game thoroughly bertolet kept the offensive through out and won by decision over pauli a large number of lehigh root ers were present and although they were outnumbered by the colum bia spectators the brown and white rooters put the new yorkers cheering to shame in the 115-pound class schwarz bach was slated against linschitz the columbia representative the men were quite closely matched and they didn't go to the mat until sev continued on page three prof robert w blake dies after extensive illness head of arts and science department was in active service at lehigh for twenty-one years mourned by many friends continued on page four the stars of the game were un doubtedly the two centers john ny lees of lehigh and graves of perm lees seemed to hit his stride when he came up against the tall perm lad and went along fine he was responsible for four le high points by two l>eautiful goals from the center of the floor one coming in each half he met the perm center on each occasion and perm took the lead at the start of the game on the foiil shooting of mcnichol and kept it throughout the first half by the aid of rose nast's double-decker lingle was a little off on his foul shooting and could only score 2 out of 6 chances but lees got away from graves on one occasion long enough to center a field goal the twenty-minute period ended with perm leading by a 7-4 score graves started the second half by scoring from the field and with mcnichol scoring pretty regularly from the foul mark the lehligh team could not catch up in the second half danny mcnichol centered his foals in better form scoring on s out of 13 attempts the intensity with which the le high team waged battle on the red and blue representatives is shown in the fact that two of the lehigh warriors were ejected from the game because of personal fouls buddy lingle was the first to go being chased in the early part of the second half and bill spring steen followed later when he got mixed up with miller near the end of the game lehigh played the perm team to a standstill on the floor during the entire game and it was only on fouls that the quakers managed to win both team registered but three double-deckers during the contest and without the big ad vantage of fouls lehigh would not have been behind by such a margin there were but ten fouls called on the perm five giving lingle oppor tunity to equal the score made by mcnichol the lehigh team wemt into the game with a great deal of fight and spirit and as a result a large num ber of fouls were called on them these infractions of the rules were readily turned into points by the automatic mcnichol who has been doing such splendid work from the 15-foot mark for the perm team however danny was not in his best form and was only able to cage 13 out of 21 tries the lehigh basketball team jour neyed to philadelphia last saturday night and encountered the pennsyl vania team after battling thru 40 minutes of one of the roughest games on record lehigh emerged on the short end of a 19-10 score the closeness of the score indicates how hard and how well the lehigh quintet fought the mighty perm team both teams instituted the five mani s geologi cal society last tuesday night al though it was the first meeting of this organization since last year it was well attended e morgan 21 presided at the business meeting and it was decided to launch an in tensive drive for membership among all classes men being ap pointed to make a canvass in their class and course to collect the mem bership fee of one dollar roy miller 21 as treasurer gave a re port of the finances of the society which was accepted an eight-reel motion picture en titled the story of coal was shown on the screen showing the mining and preparation of this na tural resource for the market in complete detail starting with the miners being admitted to the mine by brass check the descent into the mine shaft was next pictured then a trip through the mine at the head of a mine locomotive showed the operations in underground machine shops undercutting and blasting fire and roof inspection and the carting of coal ( nhot re-hs pic tured the jiggers for separating the sulphur and slate by means of wa ter slate picking and the grading of the coal over various sized sieves explanatory remarks were made by prof h eckfeldt during the motion picture trip through the mine the second feature of the even ing was another eight reel motion picture the story of oil and the accompanying lecture by mr bedouim of the sinclair oil co various types of wells drilling and starting the oil flow by the use of explosives were shown as well as the transportation of the oil by pipe line from the oil fields to eastern chicago methods of cleaning the pipe lines by means of go devils were explained by mr sinclair and an ami mated cartoon of a humorous nature depicting the patrolling of the line was shown the refining of oil with statistics was given by air sinclair who also laid particu lar emphasis on the losses of the oil stating that more oil is lost by fire caused by lightning than through the other combined fire causes pastry and ice cream were serv ed to those present after the meet and a general discussion was en tered into all candidates for the lacrosse team will report to manager childs on monday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the trophy room of taylor gym practice will start next week prof j l stewart to speak sunday the regular meet ing of the deutscher yerein will be held to night at the sum inn at 6 30 dr schwartze will deliver an address on the origin and history of the moravians in america he is a most interesting speaker and he will afford to his audience this evening an opportunity to learn more of that interesting sect which at one time dominated the surrounding countryside after the regular business meet ing dr schwartze will escort the society to the moravian archives wherein are contained under locked dodrs the old moravian relics and records some german songs will be sung and c h jagels 22 will render a selection on the piano all who were present at the last meeting en joyed a most pleasant evening and everyone may rest of the faculty to all lehigh men prof stewart is well known and it is certain that his address will be full of interest he has been associat ed with lehigh i'niversity since 1897 and is also a member of phi beta kappa and tail bet pi the subject for the meeting has not yet been announced but an unusual af ternoon can be promised the victory attained by the le high tankmen over the stevens swimmers last saturday was a de cidedly decisive one in that the brown and white men captured every first place every event was nevertheless very close and hard fought the lehigh team was at the height of its condition and the meet was a revolutionary one to followers of the lehigh squad the first event was the 160-yard relay yaninort the last man of the lehigh quartette finished no more than a quarter of a lap ahead of capt eberhart of the stevens team in an exciting race second in the order of events came the plunge this seemed to be an off-day for the plunger of both teams the winning plunge of arner being 56 feet 6 inches this was but six inches more than the plunge of adams stevens who jnade second regad upon whom rhe brown and white more or less depended to win was off-color and he had difficulty in keeping a straight course and hence was un able to place the 220-yard dash which came next was perhaps the most excit ing lit was won by capt jacobs in 3 minutes 4-5 seconds the pool being but 20 yards in length it was necessaray to swim eleven laps ( n the ninth lap when ja cobs was leading by half a length he mistook the lusty cheers of an ardent rooter for a signal to stop thinking that the race was ended he stopped stood upright in the pool and looked back when he saw the stevens men speeding up behind him he started again and in spite of this woi the event this accounts for the comparatively poor time which was made there was some discussion among the judges a 9 to whether jacobs should be disqualified for this stopping but finally it was decided that he was the rightful winner the 40-yard dash and the dives were then run off consecutively and yannont captured first place in both this is the first time that vaiunort has won a dive and from his dependable work of saturday it was seen that he is a cracker-jack diver as well as a sprint man the closing event was the 100 yard which was won by schaeffer in an exhibition of hard plugging lie won out over blake was in his 57th year he was born may 21 1864 in winneshiek co la a son of robert w blake and emily day ton blake he received his early education in the public schools of richmond \ a and east or ange and newark n j he en tered new york university in 1883 transferring at the end of his freshman year to princeton uni versity he was graduated at princeton in 1887 with the degree of bachelor of arts winning the classical fellowship continuing study at princeton in the graduate school he received the degree of master of arts in 1888 he then entered the princeton theological seminary which he left two years after without graduating to become instructor in greek in princeton university this position he held for four years leaving in 1894 for study abroad he was a student at the universities of leipzig and erlangen 1894-95 in the fall of 1896 he became professor of latin in washington & jefferson college where he served three years prof blake was called to lehigh in 1899 as professor of latin during the presidency of dr t m drown and has been in continuous and ac tive service since for main years he has been head of the course in lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday blake three children constance wife of r w bennett of bartow fla miss | mary e blake and robert d ; blake and one brother the rev john d blake of marshallton del the funeral was held on satur day jan 29 with a large attend ance of friends at the service held at noon at the blake residence st i luke's place and ostrum street j the service was conducted by bish op talbot interment was made at laurel blake professor of latin and head of the college of arts and science of lehigh uni versity died january 27th in st luke's hospital after an illness since dec 31st of pneumonia and meningitis prof blake was in his 57th year he was born may 21 1864 in winneshiek co la a son of robert w blake and emily day ton blake he received his early education in the public schools of richmond \ a and east or ange and newark n j he en tered new york university in 1883 transferring at the end of his freshman year to princeton uni versity he was graduated at princeton in 1887 with the degree of bachelor of arts winning the classical fellowship continuing study at princeton in the graduate school he received the degree of master of arts in 1888 he then entered the princeton theological seminary which he left two years after without graduating to become instructor in greek in princeton university this position he held for four years leaving in 1894 for study abroad he was a student at the universities of leipzig and erlangen 1894-95 in the fall of 1896 he became professor of latin in washington & jefferson college where he served three years prof blake was called to lehigh in 1899 as professor of latin during the presidency of dr t m drown and has been in continuous and ac tive service since for main years he has been head of the course in lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday
