catholic chaplain has been named assistant superintendent of education for the diocese of allentown he will be replaced by the rev richard schware on feb 6 schware who currently teaches at notre dame high school m easton was m residence at the university from 1976-78 i leave with a very positive attitude cofenas said i feel the lord is calling me to do something else for the church cofenas first came to the university m january 1973 and was named catholic chaplain m june 1975 he received his doctorate m educational administration from the university m 1977 cofenas who taudht at bethlehem's liberty high school before entering the priesthood will work m allentown and live at st simon and jude parish m bethlehem he will work m the area of secondary education m the diocese which includes northampton lehigh schuylkill berks and carbon counties i leave with a tremendous feeling of love for the friends i made here cofenas said and i would like to express my deepest appreciation to dr lewis the administration faculty and students the faith experience of so many of our students is incredible he continued i would like to leave with a big thank you for thdr love which has made my treacherous not everyone was pleased with the ice removal see letter page 3 father robert cofenas university tuition hike similar to peer schools by steve samuelson carnegie mellon university and ren sselaer polytechnical institute have adopted 400-tuition increases for the 1979 80 school year according to spokesmen for these universities last friday the university's board of trustees adopted a similiar 420 increase m tuition john woltjen university vice president and treasurer said he expects most other colleges m the university's peer group to raise tui ton between 400 and 500 according to the carnegie m**?»*ia treasurer undergraduate tuition there will be raised from 3,700 to 4,100 m the 1979-80 school year a 10.8 per cent increase graduate school tuition will be increased 17.5 per cent from 4,000 to 4,700 a year he added that president carter's anti inflation guidelines were taken into con sideration when determining the in creases tuition at rensselaer will probably rise from 4,375 to 4,775 a 9.1 per cent in crease according to the assistant con troller there he said the board of trustees decided that the increase will not exceed 400 tut said he truly doubts ii it wiii be any less room and board increases have not yet been fully determined but he said rensselaer administrators are working hard to stay within carter's anti-inflation guidelines university may be exempt from wage-price guidelines by jim donahue the circumstances surrounding the university's increases m tuition and faculty salaries would exempt the university from president carter's wage price guidelines john woltjen university vice president and treasurer said according to woltjen tuition and fees this year cover 89 per cent of educational expenditures at the university next year's tuition will cover a slightly lower percentage of the educational ex penditures president carter requested last fall that all increases m wages and prices be held to seven per cent as part of his inflation fighting program the university's increase m tuition of 420 is a 10 per cent increase over this year's tuition of 4,130 the total increase m tuition room and board amounts to 530 or 8.9 per cent tuition room and board will be 6,450 for students living m the least expensive dorms and on the 21-meal plan students living m warren square the centennials trembley park and rh-12 and on the 21-meal plan will pay more on the average the faculty will receive an 11 per cent increase m salary of that increase seven per cent is a regular in crease three per cent is a special com pensation increase and one per cent is an adjustment for changes m social security taxes and other benefits woltjen said the university took into account the president's guidelines when deciding on tuition and salary increases hie reasons why the university did not comply with them were the university announced its faculty salary increases before the president announced his guidelines . the government issued no specific instructions on how these guidelines would apply to educational institutions woltjen said the faculty increase had to be as large as it is because faculty salaries were not competitive with the schools the university compares itself to although the government wants to see its guidelines complied with it also wants educational institutions to remain financially sound woltjen said the university's noncompliance with the guidelines will not affect its research contracts with the government he con tinued the government has threatened to cancel a contract of 5 million or more with companies that do not comply with the guidelines university president deming lewis said m his letter to parents concerning the tuition increase that income from student sources tuition board and room represents only 60 per cent of our total financial picture of approximately 47 million woltjen said that most other schools also compare income from tuition to total expenditures according to woltjen the budget is divided into three parts educational financial aid and auxiliary expenses tuition and fees cover 89 per cent of the educational expenditures financial aid is paid for totally from
