proposed plaza highrise will be presented to university trustees this week the brown and white has learned a trustee decision concerning the project might be reached within two weeks according to an administration source the plaza review board the vehicle for student opinion in planning for the highrise heard the administration's proposal for the residence facility for the first time last night however the review board will not get an opportunity to make recommendations concerning the plans before the proposal is presented to the trustees the administration's proposal includes university financing of the housing project most recently estimated to cost 2.1 million high ranking administration sources told the brown and white this financial arrangement represents a significant change from the plans which originally were proposed over 13 months ago the plaza developers had planned to provide their own financing and lease the residence space to the university according to the current proposal the administration plans to borrow funds for the building at an eight and three-quarters per cent interest rate the university then would own the building after it was constructed plans for the project call for 200 students to be housed in a six-story building to be constructed by august 1979 on the site of the university owned college theater a dining and recreational facility is planned for addendum above is an artists rendering of the new entranceway to the field house which will be made sometime this year and costs 100,000 after the addition is completed the field house will be named after alumnus philip rauch b&w photo by guckman the fate of the college theater may he determined within two weeks the board of trustees will receive the administration's plans for the proposed plaza highrise this week affirmative action dispute stalemates advisory group by linda pickens differences in opinion about the structure and duties of the affirmative action officer at the university have resulted in a stalemate for the equal opportunity advisory committee to the president according to robert rosen wein chairman of the social relations department and committee cochairman the differences don't break down neatly for example into faculty versus administration rosenwein said the stalemate is caused by a lot of positions about whether the affirmative-action officer should be filled by one person or more than one and the amount of ad ministration involvement with the office rosenwein explained meanwhile the appointment of an in terim affirmative-action officer remains in abeyance according to rosenwein a suggested candidate for the post was sent to university president deming lewis for approval following the committee's march 2 meeting it appears that the committee is taking the risk of working out this problem before appointing an interim officer rosenwein said the committee is concerned with one absorbing problem right now said linda turner cochairman of the committee and admissions counselor we've made progress we're not back to block one a proposal made at the committee's march 9 meeting by austin gavin executive consultant to the president and committee member shook up the works a little but it isn't the death knell of af firmative action turner said both she and rosenwein declined to comment further on gavin's proposal partially because of gavin's proposal the group is split according to turner into three sides i can think of at the moment but there may be 16 i would hope we could resolve part of the problem by next week turner said she called the problem a com munications gap we're mixing issues that need separation we've hit a log jam she concluded at last thursday's meeting the com mittee also discussed the agenda for wilma scott heide former president of the national organization of women now and lecturer who will speak at the university april 19 we want to make effective use of the time she spends with us turner said heide will speak with the committee the forum affirmative action subcommittee and a group of women faculty members and administrators muriel whitcomb assistant dean of students said in addition heide also will present a public lecture s-he who laughs lasts whitcomb said addition planned for field house by charlotte lohrenz a 100,000 addition to the field house in saucon valley will be made this year according to eric ottervik vice president for planning the building will be officially named the philip rauch fieldhouse when the addition is completed according to deming lewis university president philip rauch is a university alumnus rauch is the major donor of funds to the 2-million field house according to ot tervik and also provided the funding for the addition rauch is currently the chairman of the executive committee of parker hannifin corp a multinational corporation which manufactures fluid power components and automotive parts the addition to be completed before fall of 1978 will provide an appropriate place to display the philip rauch field house inscription according to ottervik the revised entranceway will have a canopy fronting a new series of windows according to an artist's rendering of the addition trees and shrubbery will be added in keeping with the landscaping scheduled for the proposed arena the addition will serve a minor func tion according to ottervik it will divert people coming into the field house away from the pole-vaulting area in his release lewis said we are privileged to name this building in honor of mr rauch a distinguished lehigh alumnus and international corporate leader whose professional achievements and devotion to his alma mater have been outstanding rauch of old westbury n.y and palm beach fla was a member of the class of 1933 he was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams a member of phi delta theta fraternity alpha kappa psi national business administration honorary and cyanide the university's leadership honorary rauch earned his b.s degree from the new york university school of commerce in 1935 rauch assumed the presidency of the ideal clamp manufacturing co in 1971 ideal merged into parker hannifin rauch was elected director of the company in 1972 chairman of the executive committee in 1974 and chairman of the board in 1975 he has served as the area chairman of the new century fund and is now a member of the development committee of the board of trustees in 1976 he received the l-in-life award from the lehigh club of new york the award honors a recipient's
