three-track distribution requirement system for the college of arts and sciences has been replaced by a proposal composed of both freshman year requirements and an additional twenty hours of studies after a major is chosen according to the new proposal fresh man candidates for a bachelor of arts degree would be required to take two courses each from the humanities social sciences and natural sciences the object of these requirements would be to give students experience with each of the arts college's three disciplines before a major field is chosen students would also be required to take two semesters of fresh man english language and mathematics would no longer be required but would remain as options in addition to the freshman requirements a student would be required to elect at least 20 hours of courses in disciplines outside his own this requirement is designed to insure breadth in the student's progress towards an arts degree commenting on the new proposal john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences said that the proposal is simpler and easier to administrate than the three track system it has the economy of simplicity he said moreover it reflects most of the deep concerns expressed at the faculty meeting anthony james professor of english and chairman of the committee charged with designing the proposal said that the new proposal answered most of the ob jections brought up by the faculty at the last meeting douglas feaver professor of classics said that he favored the proposal calling the three-track system totally unrealistic the only real issues that are left are the language and mathematics requirements he said he added that he plans to introduce two separate amend ments at the next meeting calling for the addition of a language and math requirement the concept of a freshman package of courses was suggested at the jan 21 meeting of the arts and sciences college faculty by lawrence leder chairman of the history department u should drop language rule valenzuela says by rick venanzi tlie language requirement should be dropped said victor m valenzuela professor of spanish valenzuela said that he was tired of other people telling me how to run my department he was referring to other members of the faculty in the college of arts and sciences who have a lack of respect for professional people valenzuela said it would be a disservice to the students if the requirement were reduced to just two semesters because it takes at least twice as much time to learn a discipline such as a foreign language cutting the requirement in half is just like pulling a needle halfway out of your arm if the requirement is to stay it should give the student a reasonable amount of time to develop a good understanding of the language submit grievances valenzuela said that the students should submit their grievances to the forum if they want the curriculum to change he also said we the university can't fool around any longer a final decision must be made this year it is unfair to the students who have been waiting for the requirement to be dropped they should not be kept waiting any longer anna herz chairman of the department of modern foreign languages and literatures said that a language depart ment meeting will be held tuesday in which the new proposals will be discussed mrs herz said a decision on the matter has not yet been reached by make gifts according to him there are personal campaigns in 40 locations with 1500 volunteers working for the university franz said using charts he explained how the 30 million campaign is divided into 40 leadership gifts totaling 15.5 million 1655 special gifts and thousands of general gifts franz said non-alumni such as private foundations and corporations have con tributed 12 million so far he continued that strangers contribute funds because they are impressed by sound business management . . . impressed with the fact that lehigh alumni support this institution the way they do and because strangers see a good product resulting from students and faculty bsw photo by murphy paul franz amidon claims renewal plans are a mistake the planned renewal of downtown bethlehem will such as the planned 10 million ho tel-theater convention center complex at broad and main streets and a shopping mall project in the building process estimates will be found inadequate more money will be requested but we'll wind up with smaller buildings costing two to three times the estimate after about five-years the venture will be viewed as a white elephant amidon said the redevelopment is a tremendous waste of the taxpayers money which will become quite apparent in a few years by then there will be a search for scapegoats he added college theater may be bought by u quay says the be used for lecture programs films academic purposes and a variety of other uses the small church adjacent to the theater would also be purchased said quay the church could be used to house the workshop theater if it could not be in cluded in the theater building itself the church is also being considered as a possible location for the admissions office quay said such a relocation however would require significant changes in the building and would be considered only if the present plans to redesign the ad missions office are not realized another possibility would be to raze the church and fill the lot with shrubbery and parking places he said extra spaces are not needed there however due to the proximity of maginnes hall and mart library parking lots the theater would be comparable
