considering construction of a hotel and conference center on part of the homer laboratories site according to vice president for administration and treasurer john woltjen the hotel and conference center could house from 200-300 people and include meeting rooms and dining facilities the facility would be a very valuable campus resource since many university sponsored programs and activities bring out-of-towners to the lehigh community he explained such plans for the 742-acre tract are one of many currently in the talking stage among lehigh administrators lehigh has made an agreement in principle with bethlehem steel corp to purchase the land on south mountain between the main campus and the murray h goodman campus along with five homer research laboratory buildings however woltjen stressed that any plan to develop the area is at least five years away largely because of the enor mous amount of money it will take to purchase renovate and operate the homer complex for the next 200,000 in stolen goods found in prof's apartment four truckloads of stolen goods worth more than 200,000 were found tuesday in the bethlehem apartment of adjunct english lecturer thomas todd dawson iv ac cording to police bethlehem police capt john yerk said the items covered four years of burglaries police recovered microcomputers typewriters a laser printer books rare photos rugs and suits from the apartment at 7 w north st the search by bethlehem and campus police began at about 1 p.m and continued until the early evening tuesday according to campus police lt edward shupp dawson 35 signed a consent form that morning before district justice john gombosi to allow his apartment to be searched yerk said three investigators will spend the next few days cataloging the con fiscated items shupp called the discovery one of the biggest breakthroughs in burglary he could remember police believe much of the equipment was related to august jobberies of maginnes hall and the 100 and 200 blocks of east broad street bethlehem dawson was arrested at about 7:30 p.m saturday at maginnes by campus police shupp said the building had been under sur veillance since the two august break-ins in which more than 50,000 worth of computers and books and a 15,000 photo collection of bernhard j suess were stolen after his arrest dawson was taken to northampton county prison in lieu of 5,000 bail he has since been arraigned on 41 counts of burglary three counts of attempted burglary 44 counts of criminal mischief 26 counts of theft and 26 counts of receiving stolen property gombosi raised his bail an additional 15,000 and dawson was returned to prison according to campus police the large number of charges for burglary and related offenses resulted from the number of offices entered a total of 44 from the two break-ins dawson had worked as a teaching assistant at lehigh for 10 years a preliminary hearing on the charges has been scheduled for 11 a.m tuesday gombosi said dawson is applying for a public defender new security guard to patrol lu campus bynickjanulis a part-time security officer will begin patrolling lehigh's campus on foot tonight at 1 1 p.m as part of an effort by lehigh's administration to provide increased security for dormitory students campus police officer robert case will check exterior residence hall doors on some thursday nights and every friday and saturday night between 11 p.m and 7 a.m to ensure the doors are closed and locked according to campus police chief eugene dax case a licensed security officer will be armed with mace handcuffs and probably a nightstick but no firearms dax said he will wear an easily recognizable light brown shirt with a blue and gold security guard badge on the sleeve according to dax case will patrol all residence halls and sororities including the off-campus dormitories brodhead house warren square and packer house case and the campus police do not provide protection for non dormitory off campus students since those students live in the jurisdiction of bethlehem police dax said case's main thing is to be our eyes and ears dax said case will communicate directly with campus police about what is happening on campus during his patrol students can com municate something to him if they see something happening on campus or just talk to him about improving campus security dax said campus police have neither the time nor the manpower to patrol every part of campus during this period of time campus police will get a general perspective of what happens during the weekend i need that security dax said that's not to say case won't enter a building if there's a problem he can check people for identification and he will do this case has the authority to stop someone and call the campus police for assistance dax confirmed he can also check cars that are illegally parked dax said dax will start this program on an experimental basis but he said he hopes he'll receive enough support to make this part-time service into a full-time operation i am confident the program will work and i've received a lot of support from dean of students john smeaton dax said smeaton commented that lehigh continually works to improve campus safety but his staff will continue to keep students aware of their safety on campus letters were sent to campus and off-campus students earlier this semester about safety precautions rape whistles and pamphlets about rape continue to be given to students as they have in the past semesters smeaton added campus police lt edward shupp examines
