followed the report of an emer gency committee on educational policy which devised the new aca demic set-up at conferences held during the christmas holiday va cation every point recommended by the committee was approved at the general faculty meeting most significant portion of the faculty action from the academic standpoint was the adoption of the committee's proposals to expedite graduation of future students and those now in college this is the plan to establish a program of graduating students within a per iod of two and two-thirds years by conducting university work on the basis of three semester periods per year the new program which has not been finally adopted in all details proposes the addition of a 16 week semester to the regular school year this new term would run from late in may until early september de tails will be worked out by the emergency committee on educa tional policy and presented for final action at a special faculty meeting later this month as a result of the new plan members of this year's junior class will be able to complete their work in february of 1943 sophomores in september of 1943 and fresh men in may of 1944 for this lat ter class the revised program will cut a full year from its members college careers the faculty according to regis trar george b curtis does not contemplate making the summer semester of 16 weeks compulsory the regular four year plan of ac ademic work will be maintained for those students who wish to continue under the present sys tem although no definite program or schedule has been set up for the summer semester plans under consideration provide for the off ering of sophomore and junior courses which will fit into the aca demic schedules of the following semesters — i c providing sets of courses which will give the sopho mores and juniors the prerequi site subjects which will permit them to take advance junior and senior courses respectively this system according to mr curtis would permit the students to take their advance courses in the regularly scheduled semesters allowing them time in addition to pick up later the required and optional collateral courses which do not have the set prerequisite courses the basis on which linked sets of courses would be given accord ing to mr curtis would be to offer the first subject six days a week for the first eight weeks of the summer
