arrested in connection with the saturday morning murder of 19 year-old freshman jeanne clery josoph henry 20 of 505 e sth st has been charged with murder burglary rape involuntary deviate sexual inter course aggravated assault indecent assault theft receiving stolen property and robbery he is being held at northampton county prison a preliminary hearing has been set for thursday april 17 at 10 a.m henry is being represented by easton attorneys lorenzo crowe and george blasco the northampton county district attorney's office has ordered blood tests on henry to determine if his blood type matches that of traces of semen found on the body clery was found dead in her third floor stoughton house dormitory room at 11 a.m saturday by another student nor thampton county coroner joseph rei chel pronounced her dead at the scene according to reichel cause of death was manual strangulation and the body showed evidence of both physical and sexual abuse time of death was reported to be around 5 a.m saturday clery of bryn mawr montgomery county pennsylvania was in the college of arts and science and was a member of the women's tennis team â– the funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m tomorrow at the villanova university chapel buses will be availa ble for students to attend the service dean of students john smeaton has been in contact with clery s parents who were notified saturday afternoon of their daughter's death henry was arrested at 2:49 a.m mon day at his off campus residence and arraigned before district justice john gombosi henry's house which he shares with the faculty seem to feel it would do just the opposite the situation sometimes arises where a graduate student will use confidential in formation belonging to a company without realizing that he is thereby subjecting himself to their clauses regarding confidentiality publication and property rights or a student while under obligation to a company ibm may be paying his tuition for example may develop something that is patentable publication of the information before a patent can be obtained would negate the company's market edge in research normally in these cases the university reaches a compromise with the external agency in question according to richard streeter director of the office of research the university gives a company a certain amount of time to review research relevant to their operations to see if any question of property rights or a patent is involved if they don't respond in time said streeter the university publishes if they do we look into what they're concerned about it is here that a formal statement of university policy would come into play to negotiate a confidentiality arrangement streeter stressed that the university wants their right to publish guaranteed by calling for all dissertations and theses to be fully accessible to the graduate committee and the faculty involved in the approval process lehigh hopes to be able to warn students about circumstances for withholding under the proposal confidentiality arrangements require the approvals of the student the major professor and the dean of the graduate school if the arrangement is with an external agency it requires the approval of the director of the office of research one reason for this point is to prevent professors from making private deals with companies without the university's awarded a national science foundation nsf grant valued at 10.4 million over five years to establish a national center to spur technological advances in the design and constuction of large structures and the materials used in them the foundation announced march 26 the focus of lehigh's engineering research center on advanced technology for large struc tural systems will be to improve the worldwide competitiveness of u.s structures-related industries through automation increased efficiency in the use of manpower materials and other resources and a shortening of the time needed to complete projects lehigh was one of five centers selected by nsf out of 102 original proposals for centers from 75 research institutions first-year funding of the center which begins may 1 will include 1.4 million from nsf and support from industry the commonwealth of pennsylvania and lehigh we are extremely gratified by this recognition from the national science foundation and are pleased to play a role in the revolution in engineering research and education represented by nsf's new engineering research centers program president peter likins said the establishment of the center was made possible by a unique federal-state-industy-university partnership he continued we were materially assisted in our efforts to establish this center by our congressman don ritter our governor dick thornburgh and our state secretary of commerce jimpickard likins said ritter representing the 15th district was an early and persistent advocate of the lehigh center he assisted lehigh in soliciting industrial support for the center and arranged for center director john fisher professor of civil engineering to address the congressional steel caucus this resulted in the caucus written endorsement of the center which was presented to nsf officials ritter's staff members also helped lehigh refine and sharpen the focus of its proposal assistance from the state includes 2 million toward a multidirectional loading test facility and 1 million in research support from the lchigh-based ben franklin north east tier advanced technology center likins said in addition state officials assisted
