lehigh university brown and white v01.83 no 17 bethlehem pa friday november 5 1971 866-0331 u considers creation of law school by gary s hauk it is nothing new a law school for lehigh has come up many times before but the words of dr albert ettle mover provost and vice-president hide the fact that a subcommittee has finally been created to study the feasibility of building a law school at the university under the jurisdiction of the educational policy committee of the faculty ed pol the subcommittee will undertake a study of several areas of relevance to a new law school and will report its findings to ed pol within 60-days the subcommittee will make a cost analysis using data from a study made by hofstra university before the building of thehofstralaw school as well as information from deans of law schools across the country dean brian brockway of the college of business and economics and former dean of the detroit university law school said that costs oould range anywhere from hofstra's 580,000 to georgetown university's 9-million complex a law building would be tnexpendable at lehigh particularly because the university presently does not have facilities for mock courtrooms where students can practice trial procedure v the law building would also have to house offices conference rooms and lecture rooms which university space presently does not provide for in addition to a separate law building which could or could not be used by other colleges of the university lehigh would have to build a new law library according to james mack director of university libraries law libraries contain anywhere from 30,000 to one million volumes in addition a law library must be able to seat approximately 60-per cent of the law school student body and must prof j.b mcfadden dr albert zettlemoyer coed housing arrangements uncertain for next year no definite housing arrangements have been made for the increased number of coeds expected next year a task force for the investigation of the placement of pirls reported its findings wednesday at the residence subcommittee meeting after meeting with clarence b campbell dean of residence rich conday head of the task force said that extended housing plans depend on a number of unknown factors including the number of coeds admitted next year and the crowded conditions of dorms conday said that campbell indicated the possibility of placing women in one section of richards or two sections of mcclintic-marshall or both depending on the number of women admitted if richards was used the dorm would probably be renovated using project 76 as a guideline conday also said that campbell speculated that the renovation might reduce the number of students ace omodated from 196 to 145 a separate group was set up to investigate the location of new residential buildings dr roger g slutter introduced the possibility of planning a separate building to supplement inadequate facilities in the dorms the building could include lounges and laundry rooms the task force investigating alternate living groups plans to research the life patterns and p*ouping of students in dorms the residence subcommittee of the forum met wednesday and among other things discussed the possibility of housing next year's increased number of coeds in either sections of richards house or mcclintic-marshall . u-city police relations termed good by sotak by patrick fekula i guess you could say we are sticking our heads in the sand so to speak stated captain andrew j sotak concern ing the underage drinking situation at lehigh the university police force has complete jurisdiction on rampus he continued but they may call on us from time to time for assistance if the need arises sotak is in charge of the administrative branch of the bethlehem police depart ment according to him there are very good working relations between the city police men and the campus policemen in fact he stated university officials and students are also very cooperative a few years ago bethlehem policemen worked the houseparties held at the various fraternities on campus but this put the men in an embarrassing situation it was very hard for us to stand by and watch the law being violated by 17 and 18 year old kids who were drinking at the parties soltak remarked the policemen finally had to give up these jobs which were extra work giving outside pay the standing rule now is that as long as the students stay on campus scranton to speak forum sets meeting because of former governor william scranton's experience on the carnegie commission and as chairman of the presi dent's commission on campus unrest said john fields 72 it was felt that he could provide the forum and the lehigh community with the trends of higher education in academic curricula and governance procedures scranton will speak in grace hall at 8 p.m dec 8 before a special all-uni versity convocation of the lehigh forum the public is invited to attend and there will be no charge for admission this special meeting is one of the two forum convocations scheduled each academic year as prescribed by the body's constitution during which forum actions are reported to the lehigh academic community at large , scranton has also served as an am bassador a member of congress from 1961 to 1963 a member of the general advisory committee on arms control and disarmament and a member of the missions to western europe and the middle east william scranton see education page 4 see financial page 4 forum there will be a monthly meeting 1 \ of the forum at 7:30 monday nov i 8 in uc 308 agenda will include 1 a report of the trustee representa tives a report from mr leckonby director of athletics and reports • from the five standing committees 1 a student
