lehigh university brown and white 866-0331 vol 84 — no 13 bethlehem pa , october 13 1972 shriver woos labor in bethlehem by jeff bloom pledging an administration that puts people ahead of corporate profits demo cratic vice-presidential candidate r sargent shriver campaigned in the lehigh valley wednesday shriver spoke to the retail clerks union local 1361 of the afl-cio and the delegates to the 51st convention of the pennsylvania state council of carpenters at the hotel bethlehem shriver s speech was highly critical of the nixon administration citing that unemployment has doubled nationally as has the number of people on welfare shriver also noted that during the johnson administration unemployment in the lehigh valley was at 1.8 per cent it is now 4.4 per cent concerning nixon shriver said here's a man who has put more people out of work and more people onto welfare than any other president since herbert hoover and i think that we should do exactly the same with him as we did with hoover shriver also stated that nixon created a split-level economy one where you keep wages in the basement as prices go through the roof shriver said that the main goal of his appearance was an attempt to woo labor support for the mcgovern shriver ticket his speeches were attempting to show nixon as being anti-labor he claimed that last year 200 americans who earned over 200,000 did not pay any taxes showing that the tax burden was on the low income-laborer shriver also pointed out the rise in food costs among these rises he said the worst is that pretzels are up 10 per cent and beer is up 23 per cent he quipped you can't even watch a football game and drink a beer and eat pretzels without paying a special tax to richard nixon another price rise he mentioned was the 12 per cent price rise in aspirin shriver said you can't even afford to get a headache under nixon although we are getting plenty of them after shriver criticized the inflationary situation in the country he began to comment on nixon's vietnam policy describing nixon as having been belli cose and warlike all of his life in contrast shriver said that george mcgovern during his television speech tuesday night laid his seven-point peace plan on the table he stated it was not a secret plan but a public plan for ending the war he said mcgovern s plan will bring peace to vietnam and that will lead to peace at home speaking about the 310,000 vietnam veterans who are . unemployed shriver blamed nixon for creating a modern breadline by vetoing recent legislation shriver pointed out that labor had always been anti-nixon he said that labor worked to defeat nixon when he ran for congress for the senate for governor of california and for president in 1960 and 1968 shriver noted a report by the afl-cio committee on political educa tion which cited nixon's voting record on labor issues as being 13 per cent while mcgovern s was 94 per cent shriver claimed that labor will not remain neutral in this year's presidential election and will once again fight richard nixon he further commented any union leader who tells his membership to vote for richard nixon is telling them to vote against their own interests and slash their own throats from ear to ear through rhetoric b&w photos by owl and sarcasm shriver criticizing the nixon administration filling of saucon valley housing may be a problem slutter says by martin baron i don't think you can fill it the saucon married graduate student housing with graduate students commented roger slutter associate professor of civil engineering at a residence subcommit tee meeting tuesday i'm very much concerned that you can't fill those units without stuffing freshmen in there slutter said i have not found that graduate students are very interested in this thing — they don't seem to be very much concerned the saucon housing which will have 148 units is scheduled for completion by september 1973 slutter a non-forum member of the residence subcommittee cited the location and the university's position as landlord as the chief reasons for a lack of graduate student interest he said the location in saucon valley would mean that married couples must own two cars one for the husband to go to school and the other for the wife to drive to work slutter mentioned that a transportation system to and from saucon has been considered but would be unworkable students are also hesitant about having the university as their landlord slutter said he noted that students are afraid that such a large institution will not heed their complaints the university has to be better than the average owner slutter said or the criticism is multiplied slutter also pointed out that the number of graduate students at lehigh has declined since the housing was first conceived in 1969 although expressing confidence that apartment units could be filled by undergraduates slutter claimed that such a combination of graduate and under graduate students would create leasing problems because of differences in their academic calendars slutter expressed hope that terms of leases for smags would be more lenient than those in town he said graduate students in town must sign leases for one year when their academic year lasts either 10 or 14 months slutter suggested there by a minimum period for which a student signs a lease after which he could rent by the month rental rates have not been determined yet slutter said there is a question about whether rates will be determined by per-person or per-unit occupancy slutter said this would depend upon the level of occupancy next year b * w photo by owl professor alv are's fa 43 class built kites and tried to fly them last monday high winds and obstructions desroyed several kites forum
