given this weekend vol xlviii no 52 hawley godshall address school press session saturday morning hail knutson's equipment used at bach festival for amplification by raymond d czapko twelve mules labored two weeks to haul an 85-foot oregon pine log from new york city to bethlehem in 1909 now in 1941 students will gather around this same log for the annual flag pole day exercises this friday according to a 1914 issue of the brown and white the log later to be the university flag pole was shipped by boat from oregon to new york city around cape horn because the first boat to pass through the panama canal did not go through until 1914 since the pole would have necessitated the use of several freight cars for its transportation here freight costs were considered excessive and 12 mules spent two weeks to cover the 90-odd miles distance between the two cities laying of the foundation for the concrete four feet thick and was built around a wooden form the exact size of the outside diameter of the pole in the bottom of the hole left by the wooden form a steel shoe was set to receive the pole and three granite tiers were set on top of the concrete much care was exercised to keep the hole at center plumb the 1914 article stated the cen ter form was then removed and by means of a gin pole and guy ropes the huge pole was raised over the hole the fit was so tight that in order to be sure of the pole reaching the bottom it was greased the bronze cap-ring was then bolted on completing the op eration the pole must have been set very straight since the civil engin eering
