meetings was passed at yesterday's meeting the motion introduced last spring then given to ed pol for study was brought off the table amended and then passed after an hour's debate tte motion as presented reads faculty meetings are open to a limited number of lemgh university students as observers except that a meeting may be declared closed on vote of a majority of voting members present or at the discretion of the chairman an observer may be granted the privilege of the floor by a majority of voting members present provided that a request for that privilege be submitted to the chairman before the start cf the meeting this motion was amended to include that it is subject to interpretation by the pre siding officer the president on specific points relating to the number of students to be invited their participation m discussions etc pending study by the governance subcommittee of ed pol yesterday's action resulted m part from a student sponsored movement to bring the question of open faculty meetings to a vote as soon as possible originally tms question was to have been part of ed pol's complete study on university governance the meeting began informally with 20 students being allowed to enter and present their arguments for open meetings before lt was officially convened three students todd tieger and mike kimmel of the smc and don parsons arcadia president spoke briefly concerning the reasons for open meetings tte students wore then requested to leeve at which point the faculty discussed the possibility of suspending the rules to permit the students to return for the debate con cerning the proposal the students were readmitted and allowed to participate m the discussion which took place then asked to leave when the vote was taken when the vote was favorable the students were readmitted and allowed to attend the balance of the meeting the question of open faculty meetings was firs t brought up last april when a group of students attempted to attend a faculty meeting and were asked to leave arcadia pas sed a motion at that time similar to the one passed yesterday by the faculty and gave it to the faculty recently arcadia passed two motions one asking for a vote on the motion at the december meeting the other asking for the 20 students to be allowed to be at the meeting for discussion t â– arcadia president don parsons addresses the faculty on tha question of open meetinge at yesterday's cession arcadia vice-president elect resigns post to go to vasser i feel that for me the value of two years at vassar far exceeds what i would gain from two more semesters at lehigh said vice-president elect hal johnson 7l m explaining the reason he has resigned from his new arcadia post his decision to resign came shortly after he received acceptance of his trans fer application to vassar college arcadia president don parsons 70 said that he and several other arcadians were disappointed over johnson's decision they feel that he could have made a big contribution to arcadia over the next year bill kuhn 70 of arcadia commented that johnson's action was in bad faith and added that it was typical cf a lehigh student to reject responsibility when somethi ng better comes along . johnson said that he is aware that some students will construe tms decision as a cop-out because the statement of endorsement for candidacy includes a clause stating that the candidate will serve on arcadia if elected however he feels a year at vassar ls too valuable to pass up the current vice-president norm monhait 70 explained that the constitu tional procedures for succession gave arcadia the power to elect one of its members to the vacant position if this is done one of the winners of the current at-large elections vill become the new vice-president the vacancy thus created would be filled by the runner-up at-large candidate with the most votes parsons said he and the other members of arcadia would like to see a new vice president popularly elected however this procedure can only be implemented by initiative or a petition started by the students themselves senior class gift nets 80 pledges since dinner since last thursday's kick-off dinner the senior class gift committee has re ceived over 80 dodges promising to contribute 25 per year for 20 years at the dinner robert mcgowan chairman of the committee stated that be hoped for 100 per cent participation from the senior class of 747 students though a decision has not been reached on where the money will be invested it ls expected to be placed m mutual funds the goal for tms year's committee will be to collect 200,000 in pledges exceeding last year's record amount of 172,000 â– the fact that 300 seniors live off cam pus will pose a major problem m the col lection of pledges according to jeff arks of the solicitation committee who ls res ponsible for obtaining pledges from town students at present the pledges have recom mended that the 1950 class gift be used for the development of the film de partment co-education a black library a black studies program and the con struction of a theatre and fieldhouse the recommendations of tte past classes hava been considered seriously ' by tte donating class commented parks he cited that last year's recommendations for tte establishment of a black summer program aad of a sound library were ac cepted by tte revisions proposed by the student i ie cr,_r_n_.itt?o and given unanimous backing by the faculty at yesterday's meeting the sole respon sibility for determining women guest hours falls to the individual or the living group depending upon how the group votes to handle the situation at yesterday's meeting dr lewis presented to the faculty a report by the slc â– which is composed of faculty members students and administrators the report recommends that the present univer sity regulations which limit tho hours for visitation of women guests when the university is ln regular session be eliminated dr lewis presented the recommenda tions stressing the time effort and consideration that had gone into the report he then asked lf there were any negative votes on the subject there were no negative responses from any member of the faculty he then declared that since there was no dissension a unanimous opinion was held m favor of the code revision this support removed any obstacle and cleared the way for immediate adoption of the resolution into the univer sity social codes dr lewis followed a procedure for which there is some precedent by dealing with the matter himself after having presented the situation before the faculty along with his reasons for handling it as such this action m effect gave the faculty a large measure of control over the entire affair they were given the opportunity to comment on the motion ammend anything they disagreed with revise it to suit them or if they so desired they could even go so far as to veto it the faculty's decision prevented a possible conflict between that body and arcadia the situation was such that arcadia was ready to implement the code revisions on their own authority if the faculty voted down the recommendations financial aid applications for financial aid for 1970-71 are now available m the office of admission and financial aid in the alumni memorial building elections elections for arcadia at-large seats will ba hold today tomorrow and thursday 9 a.m to 7 p.m m tho bookstore lobby students may voto for aa many candidates as they wish m preferential order
