lehigh university brown and white vol 7 no 21 bethlehem pa - tuesday december 12 1967 866-0331 sds will take action against dow chemical by havr rusacca this thursday and friday dow chemical company representatives will be on campus to interview students for prospective jobs it appears that dow will face opposition much like lt has experienced on other campuses and at ths univeralty last year when protestors forced the placement office to close herbert ford 68 a member of the students for a democratic socio.y will co-ordinate a special meeting of the sds tonight at 7 p.m m the university center he said that some type of action will be taken d since dow chemical will not be here until thursday and friday " that gives us plenty of time to prepare a warm welcome the main objection against dow is that the company produces napalm for use ln vietnam opponents of the use of napalm claim lt kills innocent civilians as well as the enemy ford charged the university with colluding with the company by allowing it to conduct interviews on campus in a notice published by ford he said that while demonstrations and protests are not greatly effective they must still be done even though atu.l actions are ineffectual we must some way say we are not part of those who allow johnson to get away with murder the paper said that protests are necessary and that students must be willing to say no to " war capitalists recruiting on this campus the problem as ford sees lt ls of a dual nature first the objection la made that dow chemical ls not accepting the moral responsi bility of its napalm being used ln vietnam dow published a statement on its position regard ing napalm m which the company said it supplies both the government and other firms making defense materials " the united states is involved m vietnam and as long as we are involved we believe ln fulfilling our responsibility to this national commitment of a democratic society and we do this because we believe m the long term goals of our country we respect the right of people to protest peacefully against an action with which they disagree however our company has mads the decision to continue to produce napalm and other materials as long as they are needed by our government peace corps interviews which began on monday will con tinue through friday there will be an open reception fer the pence corps representatives en thursday at 7:30 p.m m le avitt house committee fights senior class gift by brian young to encourage seniors not to give to the class gift program dave silverstone 68 and bob kraut 68 are forming an anti class gift committee we do not approve of the university's money spending program said silverstone he said he feels the university will be able to control the way ln which the class gift money will be spent m 20 years the senior class gift commit tee hopes to raise a quarter of a million dollars steve s.ozine 68 chairman of the class gift committee said he hopes that in 20 years the gift will mature to three quarters of a million dollars m 1988 silverstone said however that he fears the ad ministration will force the class to channel the gift money to an area of university spending other than the original choice by the class aubrey gladstone president of the senior class denied that this would be tbe case he said that seniors will find listed on their donation forms four separate areas of university spending seniors will be able to vote for the area they feel most import ant he said in 20 years anexecutive com mittee of this year's senior class will meet with representatives of the development office glad stone said these representatives 78,000 given to u for liberal arts hall a university publication this month at lehigh has recently revealed that an anonymous gift of 78,000 has been donated to the university toward the construction of the hall of liberal arts the gift brings to 1,234,000 the amount pledged for the project which has a 1,700,000 building budget the building ls being financed primarily by the centennial campaign 540.000 f0r the hall of liberal arts from private sources at tha end of the campaign ln january 1967 and a federal grant of 610,000 received under title x cf the u s higher education facilities act of 1963 the board of trustees has appointed a " task force from its membership to help raise tne balance in commenting on the gift w ross yates dean of the college of arts and sciences indicated he was very pleased although ha had no further information on the source of the donation groundbreaking for the building is scheduled for the spring of 1968 it will contain 38.000 square feet snd ls to be constructed west of north new street m the packer avenue urban renewal area just across the street from the mart library drug problem outlined in talk by jeff balsai according to dr francis j wuest head of the psychology department the issue concerning drugs is whether to support the criminal element through illegal purchasing or to try to get the laws changed wuest made the statement during a talk to ths newman club sunday i ting drinking sniffing smoking and injecting themselves with drugs for the past 5,000 years and that human inventiveness is always devising new ways to take drugs he also said that drugs sre classified into five broad categories â– psychotheraputie antidepressant stimulant seda tive and hypnotic those which produce psychotic effects such as lsd and those used to discover how the nervous system works he noted that not many drugs from these categories are addictive and that there is no clear evidence that marijuana and cocaine are addictive wuest said lt is hard to find whether or not such drugs as marijuana are addicting because their use is not carefully controlled and observed in response to a question wuest explained that there ls no conclusive proof that use of such drugs as marijuana lead to ths use of hard drugs except m lower socio-economic situations where the tendency is to take drugs because it's " ths thing to do he also noted that the laws restricting use of drugs can hinder research he cited the
