brown and white 866-0331 v01.77 no 22 bethlehem pa - tuesday december 7 1965 survey predicts no in honor vote by neal arluck frosh dorm men violently opposed u the results of a recent brown and white survey are borne out in the arcadia elections to be held today through thursday the honor system referendum will go down to a crushing defeat the b&w survey completed on „::■:■* saturday indicates that 65 per cent of the student body ls opposed to the referendum ha 1 lota for which can be obtained across trom the u.c post office the survey was taken by telephone among a quota sampling of 100 undergraduates and was designed to proportionally represent the number of students by living group residence halls fraternity and town college arts engineering and business and year of graduation 66-'69 the b&w survey surprisingly showed that the highest opposition to the referendum came from the freshman class which voted more than four to one against lt eighty-one per cent opposed the b&w photo by rich jams is there a doctor in the house no not even an audience these seven arcadia candidates were to discuss their views at a meeting sunday night they found the attendance lower than expected two brown and white reporters and a candidate's girl friend solon hopefuls ignored by ed jackman audience of three arcadia candidates might just as well have bayed at the moon as gather in the university center sun day night to deliver campaign speeches the audience was undersized even by lehigh standards only three persons showed up two of these were reporters from the brown and white the third person was the attractive date of one of the can didates blame for the fiasco was attributed by candidates to several factors neal arluck for instance thought it was the fault of arcadia for not publicizing the meeting all other candidates agreed this was one factor several candidates blamed the lack of publicity on d'arcy roper who is the solon in charge of the election campaign jim flndley thought there were too many things going on at one time not only tonight but all week he pointed out that between fraternity open houses honor system symposiums and the buckley debate that was coming up on monday evening little time was left for anything the candidates perhaps expecting the evening to turn out as it did did not make many plans about half of the candidates did not show up among those that did some admitted they had not prepared speeches shots arouse sayre pork men is held a 22-year-old bethlehem man ls free on 800 ball on penal code charges of violating the uniform firearms act carrying a weapon in a car without a permit and a motor vehicles violation hit-and run following two incidents in volving lehigh students late sunday night john d fox of 122e.goeppst was taken into custody by bethle hem police on the road behind the delta phi house following reports that two shots had been fired in the area police found a 38 caliber pistol in the fox vehicle also taken into custody shortly after 11 p.m as nearly 250 fraternity men some bearing pipes and stones looked on was robert j padoe 20 of easton r 2 according to police reports the incidents began when a car con taining two lehigh students anthony m holies 67 and hogrefe and a former student john a horton jr of barrlngton candidates campaign statements by 11 of the 23 candidates for arcadia xx start oh page two each constitutes a personal response to a brown and white letter of solicitation read at the first meeting for can didates although only five responses were received before the intended 5 p.m sunday deadline all were printed due to a possible lapse in communications at that meeting and in view of the allure of the candidates forum sunday evening the statements have been edited only for style grammar and spelling with the exception of one shortened to meet the length orig inally requested 4,000 hear buckley-thomas debate by louis j neureuter william f buckley and norman thomas debated " the war in viet nam and the great society before a standing-room-only crowd of 4,000 persons in grace hall last night six times a socialist candidate for president thomas said the war in viet nam ls immoral and politically stupid he suggested that the united states seek a negotiated peace and coexistence with communist china buckley recent candidate for mayor of new york city on the conservative party ticket disputed the practicality of thomas's con cept of coexistence he defended u.s action in viet nam as necessary for preservation of american and world freedom buckley attacking the great society and welfare state said gov ernment is given control of what ls happiness and thus discourages in dividuality he believes their attraction stems from people feeling although incorrectly that they are getting something at someone else's expense thomas defended the merit of a welfare state as the only way to control modern interdependent society he was not in agreement with all of president johnson's great society programs but he believes they are pointed in the right direction the first debate on viet nam consisted of two 15 minute opening addresses and two ten minute rebuttals thomas giving the first open ing address pointed to a poor record of relations we have had with the vietnamese during world warn we refused to help vietnamese nation alists get independence at geneva in 1954 thomas said we affirmed the neutralization of the area but we broke the neutralization agree ment before north viet nam buckley charged that there were certain tacts that thomas omitted from our record in viet nam that made our position there defendable buckley mentioned that the vietnamese declined to sign the geneva treaty of 1954 at no time have we protected democratic governments in viet nam said thomas diem allowed no opposition parties and since then america has supported eight or nine dictators thomas objected to conscripting young men ostensibly to protect freedom when there exists no free dom in south viet nam he refused to accept the concept of freedom being equivalent to anti communism b&w photo by dick holtz as for you - william f buckley jr had a lot to say about norman thomas during the do bate co-sponsored by ifc and the young republicans last night in grace hall but he didn't have quite as much to say about the issues thomas under tho
