th e brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania 215 861-4181 vol % - no 22 tuesday november 20 1984 few weekend disturbances yield incident with alumnus by scott cagan editor-in-chief and karen schoonover asst news editor both lehigh's and lafayette's dean of students maintained that this year's lafayette weekend resulted in few disorderly distur bances but a lehigh campus police report did indicate a lehigh alumnus was cited for disorderly conduct after pushing pulling and striking a female saturday at lo lo p.m at the sayre park gate our weekend was very good except for that one isolated in cident said lehigh campus police chief eugene dax in general it was pretty good said lafayette dean of students herm kassiah any arrests and problems occurred saturday night at the parties lehigh dean of students john smeaton agreed saying overall i was very pleased with the weekend except for the outcome of the football game smeaton however declined to comment on the police report according to the report four officers on traffic duty responded to the aid of the woman who stated that she did not know the man and wanted to get away from him she later told the officers that she was his wife the couple in mention denied any physical fight between them and said they got into a small argument campus police investigator mark diluzio said he was the first of the four officers to see the incident if that was what was going on i must be blind diluzio commented phi psi still seeking official recognition by lynn anne miller despite denial of official recognition by the interf raternity council ifc and the university phi kappa psi fraternity is sponsoring a successful rush program according to president bob lubus lubus said the off-campus fraternity located on hillside avenue was formed in may of 1983 by a close-knit group of 10 friends who tried to change the image of fraternities for themselves the phi kappa psi national fraternity with 85 university chapters had targeted lehigh as one of 30 desirable universities for a coloniza tion effort lubus a senior was impressed with the image portrayed by phi kappa psi at the university of pennsylvania and invited two national representatives to speak to some lehigh students lubus claimed that before he and several others decided to pledge phi kappa psi larry philippi former assistant dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs said receiving university recognition would be no problem four days after their pledging ceremony however philippi told the new pledges i hope you know we don't want you here former dean of students william quay then presented the pledges with a list of forbidden activities including advertising on campus use of uni versity property group frunctions and use of university resources such as central copying mike boyd greek affairs coordinator said that university recog nition was withheld because of an unwritten policy of the board of trustees in effect since the 1979 recognition of alpha epsilon pi which would not allow the recognition of any additional fraternities despite these hurdles phi kapp psi pledge six new member last year a recent rush event attracted more than 40 young men who were happy to see us and excited at the prospect that the fraternity doesn't have the reputation to live up to lubus said with 14 members two juniors and 12 seniors the colony is aiming to increase its membership to 35 by years end in order to be recog nized as a chapter by the national organization the colony must fulfill membership quota of 30 members right now lubus views the separateness from the ifc as an advan post pattern b&w photo by 808 sternueb the goalposts went down almost as easily as the engin eers in saturday's 120th meeting between lehigh and perrenlal rival lafayette with some 15 seconds left to play hordes of students braved the easton police and their canine companions to bring the posts to an untimely demise pards demolish engineers in 100th anniversary upset by rich kleban in only his third start of the season freshman quarterback jim johnson led the lafayette college leopards to a convicing 28-7 victory over the lehigh engineers saturday before a capacity crowd of 17,500 at lafayette's fisher field with the win the leopards increased their lead in the series to 66-49-5 in the 120th game of the college football's most-played rivalry the game was the 100th anniversary of the first lehigh-lafayette confrontation in 1884 johnson earned game mvp honors by passing for 166 yards and 2 touch downs while running for 63 yards and 1 score the big story of the contest though was the surprising lafayette defense which repeatedly halted the engineer running attack at crucial moments of the game it's most important stand came on lehigh's first drive of the afternoon lafayette punted after its opening possession and the engineers took over on their own 35-yard line quar terback marty horn marched the team downfield as he consistantly found tailback pete schreck alone in the flat schreck caught passes of 12 13 and 20 yards finally bringing the ball to rest on the leopard two-yard line schreck then ran three consecu tive times into the line without picking up more than one yard with fourth and-goal on the one horn rolled to his right and fired the ball through the outstretched hands of todd melton in the end zone and the engineers had lost the ball the engineer defense then stopped the leopards and another lehigh drive began with decent field position mixing the run and pass well horn brought the team to the enemy four yard line again though the engin eers were not able to cash in as defen sive back stan kwitnieski stepped in front of rennie benn to intercept horn s pass at the one benn saved a possible lafayette touchdown as he tackled kwitnieski on the play the lafayette offense finally got on track on the next drive marching 91 yards on 13 plays for the game's first score at the 10 04 mark of the second quarter the touchdown came on a four-yard pass from johnson to frank corbo . as the quarterback scram bled out of the pocket and found his favorite receiver in the end zone for a diving catch and a 7-0 lead the engineer offense after getting the ball back sputtered once again as it was unable to convert a third down inches play they punted the ball to see alumnus
